families in NV obtain a meal for their children ages 1-18. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) ensures that low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Sun-filled days at the pool, adven-turous family vacations, no alarm clocks, and extended bedtimes.

These are just a few visions that many students have as they long for the care-free days of summer. As parents plan family vacations and activities to keep their children busy, it’s important to remember that learning can and should still continue in the summer months!

You see, for children, learning is an ongo-ing process and one that continues even after the last bell of the school year. Just because families are gearing up for fun, sun and relaxation, that doesn’t mean educa-tional activities can’t be incorporated into vacation plans.

Kumon, the world’s oldest and largest math and reading program, would like to remind parents that a break from school shouldn’t mean a vacation from learning. Studies show that children can lose up to two months of their knowledge and skills between school grades. A child’s learn-ing not only stagnates during this time, but a significant amount of the knowledge gained from the previous school year could also dissipate. To make matters worse, children who languish in the summer will almost always have trouble getting started when the new school year begins.

The good news is that there’s plenty time for fun and learning. Without even realiz-ing it, your kids will enjoy themselves while keeping their brains stimulated. Here are six simple and fun ways to keep your chil-dren engaged this summer.

Read more books. You can set a time for reading each day and make it fun by establishing “together time". For instance, you can ask your child to read a book that matches a summer activity you shared, such as going to the beach, riding horses, or camping. Enhance these special learning moments by taking the reading session out-doors on a picnic, under a tree, or make the conversation at mealtime about the books they have read. Reading each day goes a long way towards building and sustaining reading proficiency and developing valu-able vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Go to the Library. Local libraries have summer reading programs from June 1 to July 31 for children ages birth through High

School. Libraries are the most affordable resource to replenish your book supply or get access to over 100,000 downloadable audio and e-books. You can get reading rec-ommendations based on your child’s inter-est and ability. They also offer children’s story-times, classes, and special events.

Las Vegas: www.lvccld.org - North Las Vegas: www.nlvld.org - Henderson: www.hendersonlibraries.com.

Have an adventure at SPRINGS PRE-SERVE. Springs Preserve has 180 acres of hiking and bike trails, Museums, Botani-cal Gardens, train rides, kids camps, live animal shows and special events right in the heart of Las Vegas. The 70,000 square

foot NEVADA STATE MUSEUM is also located on the property. There you can stand face-to-face with a 20,000 year old Columbian Mammoth skeleton, step inside a stalactite cave, watch holographic figures tell the tale of Nevada miners, see original Las Vegas showgirl costumes and more. www.springspreserve.org 702-822-7700

Let them be your Travel Agents. Many families use the summer months to take a family vacation. Before you set off on your adventure, let your children get involved in the planning process. Have them research the area you are visiting and see if there’s any nearby attractions they would like to visit. Many cities have walking or biking historical tours you can participate in. The entire process serves as a finance, geogra-

phy, history, and social studies lesson all wrapped in one.

Weekly Game Night. Pick a night of the week and host a family friendly weekly game night. For younger kids, you can play a card game like Go Fish, which works with numbers, attention and concentration, and memorization skills. For older kids, Scrab-ble is a great game for language skills and Monopoly is great for counting currency and thinking strategically.

Visit the DISCOVERY CHILDREN'S MUSEUM. Located next to the Smith Center is a 3-story museum full of inter-active exhibits promoting science, art and culture. Home to nine themed exhibit halls,

the museum entices children of all ages with a well-rounded array of learning expe-riences that feel a whole lot more like play. www.discoverykidslv.org 702-382-3445

If you’re looking for even more summer enrichment, consider enrolling your chil-dren in Kumon. The individualized pro-gram unlocks the potential in each child by helping them strengthen math and read-ing skills, which boosts confidence and improves study habits, providing benefits that last a lifetime.

Kumon is offering free registration at local learning centers from May 16-June 21. Learn more about the Kumon Math and Reading Program at www.Kumon.com or call 1-800-ABC-MATH to sign-up for a parent orientation and free placement test.

The Las Vegas Patriots competitive flag football team, with players age 10 and younger, was invited

to play a scrimmage on the White House lawn in Washington, D.C., as part of a field day hosted by the President’s Coun-cil on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Undefeated champions in the city of Las Vegas NFL competitive flag football pro-gram for the last five seasons, the team was invited to represent Nevada.

“It will be an awesome experience and the boys are really looking forward to it,” said coach Marc Fish, who has three neph-ews on the team. “The team plays for its sixth straight championship tonight!”

"These are all great boys that work really hard, and there is a special team chemistry with the boys and the parents. Many of the boys and parents are planning to go early to experience Washington, D.C., and see the sights together," said coach Jason Ahlstrom, who has two sons on the team. "Everyone is excited!"

Ahlstrom has coached his team for five years in the city league, playing exclusively on city of Las Vegas fields. He and Fish, who are brothers-in-law, currently coach two teams in the city league, but in different age divisions. Fish’s son plays on the older team. The Patriots team includes 12 players – Gavin Ahlstrom, Ty Ahlstrom, Benjamin

Chilton, Cash Creel, Cash Dunkerly, Johnny Fish, Jacob Garber, Reggie Mackay, Jagger Mendenhall, Jack Olliges, Neal Pomerantz and Beckam Rafie. Several of the current team members have been playing together since 2015. A few of the boys have never experienced a loss; some of them are only 8 years old.

On Feb. 27, 2018, President Trump, by executive order, made changes to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. The current purpose of the Council is to expand and encourage youth sports participation, and to promote the overall physical fitness, health, and nutri-tion of all Americans.

What to Expect at Your Child’s Swim Lessons

By Katrina BrandhagenOwner/Director All Star Swim Academy

NervousnessMany children have nerves and anxiety to overcome when they

start swim lessons. Some young students may struggle just with the idea of being away from their parents, so going to an instruc-tor can be a challenge. Other students may have an innate fear of the water to overcome depending on how much they have been around the pool and what their prior experiences have been like. With adults and children alike, learning a new skill can sometimes be intimidating, as it forces the student outside of their comfort zone.

The key to overcoming nervousness and anxiety at swim les-sons is to find a healthy learning environment where the student can learn to trust the water and to trust the instructor. A swim program that is based on a gentle-touch philosophy is usually the most successful place for a child to gain that water comfort that is necessary for them to progress in aquatics. Try to interfere as little as possible as your child establishes a relationship with the swim instructor. When a parent maintains a relaxed energy about them, and assures the child that they can trust their instructor and the water, the child will gradually reflect that energy. It is best to attend class as consistently as possible. Excitement

While some students may be nervous around the water, others may be overly excited at their lessons. Keep in mind that before a child starts swim lessons, they often view the pool as a “play-ground,” if they come from a family that swims recreationally. Sometimes it can be an adjustment for a student to realize that swim lessons are essentially an aquatic classroom, where they have to follow directions and abide by a structure.

For children who struggle with these behaviors, it helps for the parent to take a play-based learning approach when they swim for fun with their child. For instance, a parent can play games like Simon Says in the pool with their child and incorporate in some of the skills that the child is practicing at their swim lessons. Dive toys can also be helpful as parents can have the student practice submersion skills to retrieve dive sticks or rings from the pool. Progress

Many parents view learning to swim as a one-time event. Often we hear a mom or dad say, “My child learned to swim on such and such a day.” In reality, learning to swim is not a one-time event, but rather a journey that consists of many phases and steps. Like learning any motor skill such as gymnastics, dance, or playing a musical instrument, the length of the journey of learning to swim is dependent upon many things. Variables that influence a child’s progress in the water are the student’s listening-skills, their water comfort, the extent of a child’s separation anxiety, and his or her athletic ability. In considering all of these variables, one can under-stand why it is impossible to give a set time frame as to how long it will take for a child to learn to swim.
