Full of Confidence – You’re in Good Hands

In His Hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. Job 12:10

We hear a great deal about confidence in a variety of situations. It may be confidence that we have in the vehicle we drive, the stock market or a leader of an organization. We may hear a coach speak about the confidence that a particular team is feeling about the way in which they are playing. In fact, we may hear from a son or daugh-ter who is confident about an upcoming test. The teachers at MVL teach confidence. Our pastors in our associa-tion and our elementary school teachers teach it too. It’s not confi-dence in another sinful human being. Rather, it’s the confidence that we enjoy in our Lord. Job went through his fair share of trials and tribulations in his life. Yet, he was still able to recognize how the Lord had control of every-thing. Perhaps you may remember the Allstate commercial from a number of years ago when the catch phrase was “You’re in good hands with Allstate.” The TV screen showed two hands holding a house or car or people (I can’t remember which). I always thought that a better slogan for that picture would have been “You’re always in good hands with our Lord.” This confidence in our Lord – that we’re always secure in His hands is what we strive to teach each day at Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School. As they go through life, they will have all kinds of challenges they will confront. Without the confidence of knowing that our Lord will be with them through thick and thin, through good times and bad, we can only speculate how they’d address those challenges. We can rest secure in the hands of our Lord. He does watch over us and take care of us. Of that we can be confident.

Open House and Registration We will be hosting our Open House and Registration event on the evening of Tuesday, March 21. That evening, beginning at 6:30 p.m., we will offer tours of our school, a session for parents and students on our mission, academics and activities, and an opportunity to register for the 2017-18 school year. Parents and students of incoming 9th –12th grade students are invited and encouraged to attend. More information will be shared with the eighth grade students of our association Lutheran elementary schools.

Pike Driving School MVL is once again offering Driver’s Education classroom instruction during the after school hours from 3:15 – 5:15 p.m., beginning Tuesday, February 27. This program, offered by Pike Driving School of New Ulm, will run for three weeks through March 17. There is a sign up sheet and informational postcard in the office. Have your student pick one up for more information.

Scrip News Because there is no school on February 17th, 20th, or 24th, Scrip orders received on Monday, February 13th will not be delivered to students until Tuesday, February 21st and Scrip orders received on Monday, February 20th will not be delivered to students until Monday, February 27th. We will begin processing Scrip contributions in March so they can be applied to designated accounts, hopefully, during the month of April. Thank you for your continued support of the Scrip Program and of MVL.

After Prom Fundraiser The Junior class is putting on a fundraiser for the After Prom Party this year. They are selling pizzas from Swany’s Pub in Courtland. There will be order forms in the school office, or you can find any Junior and order from them. Orders are due in by February 12th. Thank you for supporting the Junior class After Prom fundraiser!

2017-18 PSEO and Online Class Information MVL offers both online courses and PSEO options. If your student is interested in participating in either online classes or in PSEO, please see the MVL website for more information. http://mvl.org/academics/

Important Information on Illnesses Minnesota has shown an increase in the number of cases of influenza or the flu within the last week. At MVL we have seen actual diagnosed cases of Influenza B. Symptoms of the flu include fever/ chills, sore throat, cough, headache, and muscle/body aches. These symp-toms can last 5-7 days or even longer in some cases. To prevent the spread of this contagious illness, a person should cover their cough/sneeze, wash hands frequently, especially before eating or touching their face, and most importantly, stay home if showing symptoms. It still is not too late to get your flu shot. Once they are fever free without fever-reducing medica-tion they may return to school. Their energy level may be lowered, however, so keep that in mind when allowing a student to return to school and activities to prevent a re-lapse or complications. If your child is sick, please report symptoms when notifying school personnel regarding your child's absence.

Senior Photos Needed! The MVL yearbook needs your senior photo. Please re-serve good judgment for apparel and poses. The main focus of these pictures must be your face. It should be clearly visible (no sunglasses) and close enough to see (no far away shots). These photos do not need to be profes-sional photos. All photos are subject to review by the yearbook committee. The deadline for senior photos is March 31, 2017

The Booster Club’s main mission is to raise funds to purchase non-budgeted items for all extracurricular programs and athletic teams. Extracurricular Programs – Fall and Winter Drama, Jazz Band, Chargaliers, Art Club, Dance Team, Math Team, Knowledge Bowl, Winter Weightlifting, National Honor Society, Student Council, and Speech Team. Athletic Teams – Boys and Girls Cross Country, Volley-ball, Football, Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Golf, Boys and Girls Track, Softball, and Baseball. If you have a student that participates in any of the teams or programs listed above, we are hoping that you will play your part in volunteering for a few of our concession stand shifts or fundraising activities. Without the financial support of the Booster Club, many of the items needed each year would not be available for these teams and programs.

Basketball Concession Workers Still Needed! We are still in need of workers for basketball games. It’s a fun way to meet and get to know other MVL parents and students. If you are able to help with con-cessions please respond to the emails for SignUp.com and see what will work for you. Apparel Watch for new styles coming this spring. Be sure to check the concession stand for items that are current-ly available! Future Booster Club Events for This School Year Pork Chop Dinner – Sunday, March 5th from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm MVL Auction – Sunday, March 26th

The MVL Auction is coming up on Sunday, March 26th Plans for the auction are well under way. Historically, the Annual Booster Club Auction has raised money in support of co-curricular activities for MVL students. This year, 96% of the entire MVL student body participates in at least one co-curricular activity. The dollars raised at the Auction have prevented the need for fundraising activities, such as selling magazines, cookie dough, or any of the other friends and family “will you buy” efforts. This year the Annual Booster Club Auction is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 26th. Doors will open at 11:00 a.m. and the Live Auction will begin at 1:00 p.m. Lunch will be available! MVL is in need of many volunteers to be able to make this event a success. Volunteers are needed to assist with soliciting items for both the live and silent auction. Items solicited should be delivered to MVL by March 10th. Volunteers are also needed to set up and tear down, help with the food service, run the computers and help people check out their purchases. Please plan to attend and support our biggest fundraiser! Contact a member of the Booster Club Board and ask “How can I help?” Faculty Advisor: Craig Morgan [email protected]

**To avoid any confusion, "The AD's Corner" will be written by Mr. Morgan and the specific sports articles will be written by each head coach.

You Don't Know Until You Go! Believe it or not, the month of February is one of the best times for MVL Juniors to visit the colleges that interest them. There are three vacation days this month that will allow students to visit college campuses and classrooms without having to worry about missing class time here at MVL. Another benefit to visiting at this time is that col-leges are in session and this will enable visits with not only admissions counselors, but also professors and coaches. You may even be able to take advantage of attending a concert, lyceum, or basketball game to get a better feel for the atmosphere of the college. If February won't work for your schedule, check the MVL calendar for other convenient times when you can take a tour of your next school.

Triple A Award Kaitlyn Roux and Joel Koelpin have been selected by Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School to receive the Triple A Award. Kaitlyn and Joel will represent themselves and their school at the Minnesota State High School League's subsection level. The Triple A Award recognizes and honors high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the fine arts. The Triple A Award elevates academic standards and creates greater awareness of League-sponsored activities and their values. It also provides member schools with the opportunity to participate in a statewide program that supports, promotes and recognizes academic and co-curricular achievements.

It’s hard to believe that we are over halfway done with the winter sports season. Our basketball teams are im-proving and readying themselves for their run in the playoffs in February. Your teams thank you for your sup-port! We hope you continue to come to the games, enjoy the Pep Band and the Dance Team, and cheer positively for our teams and not against our opponents or the offi-cials. Our fine arts teams are in full swing as well. Math Team is nearing the end of their season with two meets to go. Knowledge Bowl has one meet behind them and will con-tinue to compete and improve. The Speech Team will start meets in early February.

New Clay Target Team We have a new activity at MVL called Clay Targets. Many of you would know this as trap shooting. Clay Target Teams are one of Minnesota’s safest and fastest growing sports in high school. Our team will begin practice and competing in early April and go through early June. If you would like more information go to www.mnclaytarget.com If your son or daughter would like to participate please call Mr. Morgan immediately at 507-233-8658.

Coaches vs Cancer The boys’ basketball team would like to thank all of you who assisted us in raising money for the American Cancer Association’s battle against cancer. This is the second year we have participated in the Coaches vs. Cancer program that included a free throw challenge, a Wall of Honor and a 76 second bucket collection. We will announce next month how much we collected for the battle to defeat cancer. A big thank you to everyone who donated to this event as well as Kevin and Val Fischer who donated light blue socks for the boys to wear during the game. Light blue is the cancer color for prostate cancer, which was our featured cancer for this event. Light blue shoe strings were also provided to the teams from both MVL and Sleepy Eye compliments of a Thrivent Action Team Grant. We must continue to do all we can to defeat this disease that has touched each of us either directly or indirectly.
