SPEAKER INFORMATION MEETING MAY – MOMS PANEL

For our May Speaker Information meeting, we had a panel of 5 POMC moms sharing their stories; Sandy

LeGault, Dorothy Green, Remi Fitzgerald, Sandy Navarro, and Kim Brysselbout. Sandy LeGault’s daughter,

Delores, was murdered in January of 2006, by her boyfriend and father of her four-month old son, whom Sandy

and her husband, Mark, have raised and is now 13. The killer spent 2 years in jail for concealing a body and then

when released, was quickly rearrested for the murder and is serving time currently. Dorothy Green’s son,

Andrew, was murdered in August of 2018, by his husband whom he was divorcing. Currently, the family is going

through the court process. Remi Fitzgerald’s son, Matthew, was killed in December of 2015, by a friend who

stabbed him 73 times. Their court process ended last year with the killer receiving 35 years. In February of 2008,

Sandy Navarro’s son, Michael, was killed by his cousin, who was Sandy’s nephew and son of her sister. He was

sentenced to 10 years and has already been released. Kim Brysselbout’s daughter, Savannah, was killed in March

2017, while attending an event at an Art Gallery in Kentucky where she was attending college. She pushed her 2

girlfriends out of harm’s way when the shooter began firing; she was shot and killed. Kim gave Savannah up for

5

adoption to give her a better life but was fortunate to have an open adoption in which she shared in her life and

continued her relationship with her daughter throughout the years. Savannah’s murder is yet unsolved. Each of

our moms had a unique story of loss and are at various stages of their grief journey. We thank them dearly for

sharing at the meeting and offering words of advice for other moms along the journey. The main take on the

night was trying to reclaim their joy. They are determined to find joy again and to always remember that their

sons and daughters lived, not just how they died. But it is also a long journey of ups and downs, moving forward

and backward to continue to embrace their grief and pain while honoring their children.

dogs will have impeccable manners. If your dog is misbehaving, whether it is a service dog or not,

you will be asked to remove it (this is legal per ADA).

Amazon supports POMC! Please visit the National website at www.pomc.org and look for the Amazon

link. By accessing Amazon through the POMC website, POMC will receive a percentage of all purchases

opportunity to purchase items and contribute to POMC while doing so! Please share this wonderful

opportunity with chapters, family and friends. We appreciate everything you do to support POMC! If you

should have questions regarding the Amazon link, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Please remember, if you have a car, RV or boat, or any other kind of vehicle you do not need anymore,

I JUST LOST MY DAD. PLEASE GO EASY By John Pavlovitz

I remember thinking to myself, “This is insane. Your dad just died. Why the hell are you buying bananas?”

But we needed bananas. We’d be waking up for breakfast tomorrow morning and there wouldn’t be any

bananas—so there I was.

And lots of other stuff needed doing too, so over the coming days I would navigate parking lots, wait in

restaurant lines, and sit on park benches; pushing back tears, fighting to stay upright, and in general, always

being seconds away from a total, blubbering, , room-clearing freak out.

I wanted to wear a sign that said: I JUST LOST MY DAD. PLEASE GO EASY.

Unless anyone passing by looked deeply into my bloodshot eyes or noticed the occasional break in my voice

and thought enough to ask, it’s not like they’d known what’s happening inside me or around me. They wouldn’t

have had any idea of the gaping sinkhole that had just opened up and swallowed the normal life of the guy next

to them in the produce section.

And while I didn’t want to physically wear my actual circumstances on my chest, it probably would have

caused people around me to give space or speak softer or move more carefully—and it might have made the

impossible almost bearable.

Everyone around you; the people you share the grocery store line with, pass in traffic, sit next to at work,

encounter on social media, and see across the kitchen table—they’re all experiencing the collateral damage of

living. They are all grieving someone, missing someone, worried about someone. Their marriages are crumbling

or their mortgage payment is late or they’re waiting on their child’s test results, or they’re getting bananas five

years after a death and still pushing back tears because the loss feels as real as it did that first day.

Every single human being you pass by today is fighting to find peace and to push back fear; to get through their

daily tasks without breaking down in front of the bananas or in the carpool line or at the post office.

Maybe they aren’t mourning the sudden, tragic passing of a parent, but wounded, exhausted, pain-ravaged

people are everywhere, everyday stumbling all around us—and yet most of the time we’re fairly oblivious to

them:

Parents whose children are terminally ill.

Couples in the middle of divorce.

People grieving loss of loved ones and relationships.

Kids being bullied at school

Teenagers who want to end their lives.

People marking the anniversary of a death.

Parents worried about their depressed teenager.

Spouses whose partners are deployed in combat.

Families with no idea how to keep the lights on.

Single parents with little help and little sleep.

Everyone is grieving and worried and fearful, and yet none of them wear the signs, none of them have labels,

and none of them come with written warnings reading: I’M STRUGGLING. BE NICE TO ME.

And since they don’t, it’s up to you and me to look more closely and more deeply at everyone around us; at

work or at the gas station or in the produce section, and to never assume they aren’t all just hanging by a thread.

Because most people are hanging by a thread—and our simple kindness can be that thread.

We need to remind ourselves just how hard the hidden stories around us might be, and to approach each person

as a delicate, breakable, invaluable treasure—and to handle them with care.

As you make your way through the world today, people won’t be wearing signs to announce their mourning or

to alert you to the attrition or to broadcast how terrified they are—but if you look with the right eyes, you’ll see

the signs.

There are grieving people all around you.

Go easy.

Remembering You

The moment that you left me,

my heart was split in two;

one side was filled with memories;

the other side died with you.

I often lay awake at night

when the world is fast asleep;

and take a walk down memory lane

with tears upon my cheek.

Remembering you is easy,

I do it every day;

but missing you is a heartache

that never goes away.

I hold you tightly within my heart

and there you will remain;

you see life has gone on without you,

but will never be the same.

In Loving Memory

Justin Joseph Gerena Age 27 June 5, 2015

Just wanted to let you know how much I miss you. I stare at your pictures on my wall and talk, yell

and cry to you. How I miss hearing your voice, seeing your smile, but most of all just holding you. I

love you so much it still hurts. It feels like it just happened yesterday, not 4 years ago. I am truly and

utterly broke without you. You left such a big hole in all of our lives, none of us have functioned well

since you left us. I wish that I can change time and neve, ever let you go. But all I can do is JUST

remember your smile, remember how your sounded and just imagine your hold. One day I will be

reunited with you and my heart won’t be broke anymore. I’ll cry tears of happiness not sadness. I’ll

hold you till the end of eternity and never, ever let you go. Till then, I LOVE YOU and MISS YOU.

When Fathers Weep at Graves

I see them weep

The fathers at the stones

Taking off brave armor

Forced to wear in the workplace

Clearing away the debris

With gentle fingers

Inhaling with sorrow

Diminished by anguish

Their hearts desiring

What they cannot have ---

To walk hand in hand

With children no longer held

To all the fathers who leave a part

Of their hearts at these stones

May breezes underneath trees of time

Ease their pain

As they receive healing tears...
