Can We really change? With God, Everything is Possible!
Fr. James Joseph SDB
“Yes, We Can” was the famous slogan or catch phrase of President Barack Obama, when he was standing for election in 2008. If you ask people on the different sides of the political spectrum, you might get very different answers, as to what changes he managed to usher in. I am sure, all of us irrespective of political affiliations, would agree that he has changed much since then, as visible at the least from his hair color, or other signs of aging, when we look at his physical appearance now, as he is leaving the office of the President of USA.
Whether we are young or old, we desire like to change a lot of things in our life, and in the lives of others around us, if we could. Yes, we can change! In fact, the truth is that we have the power to change a lot, if we try the right way. Certain fundamentals of our nature like our voice, looks, age etc. we cannot change much; but traits of character and behavioral changes are always possible by constant practice, and a little help from significant others or by acquiring virtues. “Our greatest evil flow from ourselves” (J.J. Rousseau). We cannot blame anyone else for our conditions or our woes. Our joys and sorrows are by and large our own make. It simply begins to happen when we become selfish and conceited, which are our own vices. Virtue ‘is a glorious habit’. Regular practice of good behavior helps one to acquire virtues. Acquiring virtues, and bringing in behavioral changes, need strong motivation, or a forceful reason for the change and transformation.
For Change to happen, one must be motivated. Motivation for a person could come from God, the Holy Spirit, from personal ambition, aspiration, aim or goal in life. Though strange as it may seem, it could also be triggered by a sense of guilt and shame in some people. In a new study, Brian Lickel from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and colleagues investigated whether guilt and shame were associated with a longer-term benefit – the motivation to change. They found that although recalling both guilt and shame induced a certain motivation to change, that motivation was much stronger, when the participants recalled a time they felt shameful, than when they recalled a time they felt guilty. In other words, self-hatred is psychologically damaging but it can also make you more motivated to change. Though guilt and shame are often understood as negative experiences. A determination drives some to excel when they are shamed, challenged, or bullied by others. Some people become more resolute, and get motivated to dream higher and better, when the going gets tough, and hurdles come their way to achieving their dreams. As the saying, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going” (Dale Carnegie).
Jesus brought about the greatest change that ever happened on earth. His incarnation, public ministry, passion, death, and resurrection was the most transforming event in human history. Jesus proclaimed, “I have come to cast fire upon the earth….” (Luke 12: 49-53). Jesus brought real change and transformation by challenging His community, the Jewish people. He taught and proclaimed, the good news of the kingdom of God, and exhorted people to be simple, sincere, and loving, like little children. Jesus became in a sense, the cause of conflict among His people; as many rejected Him and His call to an interior transformation and a personal change, while others willingly accepted His call. He forewarned the people and His disciples, of the impending battle between good and evil, light and darkness. However, they could not understand His language, and the struggle He was going through, to accomplish God’s plan of salvation. Jesus changed humanity through His own transformation, by His passion death and resurrection. Our greatest good comes from within, where God dwells. We can change, if we are attuned to Him, and to His guiding voice, the Holy Spirit. “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (1Cor. 4.13). Yes, We Can!
