IMPORTANT! “In-House” Second Collection, Feb 28th

This one’s for US! All donations will remain in the parish! Next weekend, we will take up the annual, second collection for Holy Trinity Parish FUEL. Please consider making a donation to our parish. Thanks.

A Reflection “I WILL RECALL THE COVENANT I HAVE MADE …” “On this First Sunday of Lent, we meet an important biblical concept: covenant. The familiar flood story ends with God making a covenant with Noah and ‘all living things’: never again will the earth and its creatures be threatened with total destruction. Why ‘covenant’? Because, in the biblical world, a covenant was much more. In Israelite culture, covenants structured much of society. By entering into a covenant, two parties formed a relationship as close as family; it was because of this ‘blood relationship’ that each party promised certain attitudes and behaviors toward the other. The covenant with Noah is the first of several; most important is the covenant between God and Israel, formed at Sinai. Mark’s account … implies that, unlike God’s people, who failed various tests of faithfulness in their desert journey, Jesus relies on God, whose messengers ‘ministered to him.’” – At Home with the Word

The Ongoing Need for Blood

There continues to be a pressing need of donations in the city. We urge you to contact NY Blood Center to make a donation, appointments preferred. Conatact nybc.org/donate or [email protected] (Holy Trinity’s representative). A great way to start your Lent!

Third and Final Notice! SIXTH-YEAR PARISH EVALUATION

This year Monsignor Sandi will complete his six-year term as PASTOR of Holy Trinity Parish. In keeping with Archdiocesan policy, an evaluation of the parish has begun. Parishioners and staff who wish to do so may write letters with their own comments about our parish and its pastoral leadership. Please address your letters to:

Office of Priest Personnel, Archdiocese of New York, 1011 First Avenue, New York,

New York 10022 Letters MUST be received no later than Feb. 28th.

* * * * * * * * R.C.I.A.: Rite of Election

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The Rite of Election, by which the Universal Church accepts the petition of a non-Christian to become a Catholic, usually takes place in the cathedral. This year, because of COVID-19, it is being celebrated in local parishes. Since we were not able to celebrate this Rite on the First Sunday of Lent, we shall do so for our single Catechumen, LUCAS AZENHA (15) at the 11:15 Mass on the Second Sunday in Lent, February 28th. At our Easter Vigil (April 3rd) he will receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Confirmation! Please pray for him and his family. * * * * * * * *

2021 Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal The 2021 Appeal financial goal for Holy Trinity Parish this year is the same as last year, $75,500. Because of your support, this year we will enable our Archdiocese to continue to: 1. sustain numerous charitable offices, agencies, and programs to provide compassionate and effective assistance to those most in need. 2. offer financial support to needy parishes and Regional schools. 3. ensure excellent academic and spiritual formation in our schools and catechetical (Religious Education) programs training in our parishes. 4. and care for our retired clergy and Religious men and women who have given their lives in service of the Church and 5. excellent preparation for future clergy who will give theirs in the years to come. PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING A DONATION THIS YEAR AND THANK YOU!

LENT by Paul Turner Lent is the season that prepares us to celebrate Easter. The main reason Lent is important is that Easter is our most important feast. On Easter we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, whose passage beyond death into life offers redemption to believers. The resurrection is the cornerstone of Christian faith. The mystery of Christ’s rising from the dead is so deep that the Church invites us to six weeks of preparation before we fully celebrate it. We call that period Lent. For the faithful, Lent is a time of penitential practices and spiritual discipline. During this time we acknowledge our sins and seek God’s help to overcome them. Traditionally these actions show our dependence on God, our renunciation of the fascinations of this world and our desire to better the lives of others. For the elect, those preparing for baptism, Lent is a time of intense spiritual preparation. They will celebrate baptism at Easter because in this sacrament they enter the mystery of Christ’s dying. They die to their former way of life and open their hearts fully to discipleship in Jesus. For the elect, this is a season of purification and enlightenment. The prayers of this season help scrutinize and purify their intentions, remov-ing whatever might block their commitment and strengthening their resolve. They will become fully illumined with the light of Christ when they celebrate initiation at the Easter Vigil Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends before the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence. All the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.

Para el Tiempo de Cuaresma…

Recuerde el alma dormida, avive el seso e despierte contemplando

cómo se pasa la vida, cómo se viene la muerte tan callando;

cuán presto se va el placer, cómo, después de acordado, da dolor;

cómo, a nuestro parecer,cualquiera tiempo pasado fue mejor.

Nuestras vidas son los ríos que van a dar en la mar, que es el morir;

allí van los señoríos derechos a se acabar y consumir;

allí los ríos caudales, allí los otros medianos y más chicos,

allegados, son iguales los que viven por sus manos y los ricos.

Este mundo es el camino para el otro, que es morada sin pesar;

(Jorge Manrique)

Happy Lent! Have you made a Lenten strategy? How will you improve your “spiritual self?” Here are the traditional biblical suggestions: - more prayer (ongoing conversations with God) - sacrificial fasting (doing without food you enjoy), - intentional almsgiving (i.e., unselfish charity) Here’s your chance, here and now, to enrich the meaning of the Faith you practice. Remember, as a baptized Christian, each of us is “another Christ.” Imagine that! Make your Lent, 2021, an actual “life altering” experience!! Only YOU can do it!
