The Eucharist as Our Antidote From the Desk of Fr. Tim I read an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (3-15-20) about a month ago by the past executive editor, David M. Shribman, entitled “Stand together or fall together”. Like an Old Testament prophet he predicts, “There’s going to be a whole lot less social connectiveness in the United States in the next several weeks.” And it would seem that the several weeks that he was referring to will most likely turn into several months as we become more and more conscious as a country of the social aspect of Covid-19 and how easily it can spread through social interaction. A recent poll said that 44% of Americans said that even after the virus has subsided that they will be very hesitant to congregate in large crowds like sports events or concerts or theaters. And apparently, if you ever caught the disease, one of the side effects is “agoraphobia”. Terry Hanratty, the former Steeler quarterback, who suffered with it for about two weeks, said in a TV interview that it is going to be a long, long time before he ever feels comfortable in a crowd again. However, this pandemic seems to be simply intensifying a trend in our American culture and society that has been escalating since the latter half of the 20th century when membership in religious, veterans, labor, fraternal, voluntary and even parent-teacher organizations have dropped dramatically. As people become increasingly more comfortable texting each other or emailing each other, rather than talking with each other, we have been become less and less socially connected and more and more emotionally distant from each other. In short, in the last half century we have moved from being a “we” society to and “I” society. As Shribman observes, “The cost of the coronavirus is measured every day on the stock market, in falling oil prices, in peoples’ portfolios, in empty airline departure lounges, But the cost to capitalism shrinks in comparison to the cost in social capital.” Even from a purely humanistic viewpoint it is becoming more and more obvious that the only way that we will be able to defeat this virus is by becoming closer together and not farther apart. More than ever we need to become more aware of how much we need each other, not only doctors and nurses and paramedics, but the high school kid on the check-out line at the supermarket and the farmer we will never see or meet who is making sure that the country continues to be fed. As Harvard political scientist, Robert Putnam, says, “An “I” society is actually less able to deal even in the short run with a crisis like coronavirus because dealing with a threat like this requires lots of people to make personal sacrifices for the sake of others. (And) Americans today, as opposed to 50 or 60 years ago, are less willing to pay a personal price for the benefit of someone else.” In other words, it is not just a vaccine that will help us to defeat Covid-19, but it will require things like empathy and sacrifice and unity. That is why we believe, as Catholic Christians, that the Eucharist can help us to not only cope with this disease but to help us to defeat it. The Eucharist not only brings our hearts together – not only in our own community, but with everyone who shares the Eucharist throughout the world- but it reminds of the One who died for others and who asks us to follow His example by dying to ourselves by doing acts of love for others. The Eucharist reminds us that everyone matters. If people ever began to understand the real meaning of the Mass, they would also begin to understand how it is the antidote not only for this virus but for so much of the isolation and loneliness and physical and spiritual poverty there is in the world and in our neighborhoods today. Convid-19 is not only a new plague, but it has opened our eyes to the social sickness that it feeds on. And it helps us to understand in a new way what the Lord meant when He said, “Whoever eats My Body and drinks My Blood will live forever.” We need Him and He will always show us how much we need each other.

Did You Know?

Festival 2020 Good news! After consulting with our ride vendor and a number of our volunteers, the 2020 Festival is being moved to August 24-29, 2020. This will be the first time in the history of the festival where it will be held at the end of the summer instead of the beginning of the summer – maybe it won’t rain! High schoolers, this will provide you with a fun way to fulfill service hours early in the school year! Stay tuned for further updates! And stay safe and well!

St. Mary Youth The youth have been meeting on zoom, a virtual place to hold meetings to continue to grow in faith

and support during this time.

The youth group teens shared ideas on Sunday about

Summer activities. When we resume we will kick off with CYM softball and schedule a Prom for our high school graduating students! We also discussed God’s

Mercy which is as wide as the ocean. Jesus I trust in you!

Sunday April 26th we will discuss the breaking of the bread and the true meaning behind how we can recognize Jesus is present! Recognizing Jesus in our lives happens when we make real changes in our

lives. Changes in everything we do and the way we see things. How are you seeing this Covid-19 Pandemic for instance?

“Worship gets you through the hardest times in your life because it shifts your focus from the problem to

the problem solver.”

Faith Sharing for Third Sunday of Easter Take a walk today imagining the two disciples who were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus are walking with you. They recognized Jesus when He broke bread with them. Where are YOU recognizing Jesus? Who will you break bread with this week?

Friday, May 1 This Friday is the feast of Saint Joseph and the beginning of the month dedicated to Mary.

Set an image or statue of Mary in a prominent place in your home. She is our Mother who loves to be with us, hear loving words, and requests for her help. She is a Mother of Mercy for all!

“Work, Play Love: How the Mass Changed the Lives of the First Christians” is still available at the St. Mary Faith Formation office for $8.00 per copy. Call 412-486-5521 to order .

Mass Intentions and Sanctuary Candles Mass Intentions and Sanctuary Candles are still available at both St. Mary and St. Ursula. Issue No. 50 April, 2020 Marie Hunkele, editor 412-486-8611

A Monthly Publication of the St. Mary’s For Life Committee

Abortions as Non-Essential Procedures

The list of states ordering a suspension of elective abortions during the coronavirus outbreak continues to grow, with Louisiana, Maryland, and Mississippi joining Ohio and Texas in halting “non-essential” procedures, including abortion.

U.S. surgeon general Jerome Adams and the federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have advised health care facilities to reschedule non-urgent appointments and elective procedures, both to limit the spread of the coronavirus and to free up time and resources to focus on patients afflicted by COVID-19.

“The abortion industry claims they perform healthcare. However, we have evidence that abortion centers across the nation are staying open in the midst of this national health crisis, risking public health and safety,” Created Equal president Mark Harrington said. “These centers must close their doors to help stop the spread of COVID-19. If they believe in the health of Americans, they have no other choice.”

“What we are seeing once again are abortion facilities acting as if they are above the same rules than the rest of us are expected to live by,” said Operation Rescue president Troy Newman. “This is an inconsistency in the state and federal orders that are instituted to stop the spread of COVID-19. Abortion facilities frequently fail to maintain basic infection control protocols, and should have been among the first to shut down.” https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/more-states-move-to-suspend-abortions-enforcement-up-in-the-air

The Lord is Risen, Alleluia!

On this day of days, on this feast of feasts, we rejoice in the victory of life! This victory is not just a hope; it is a fact. God, in Christ, has destroyed the power of death! In all its forms -- including abortion -- death can never have the final word!

This is why we are pro-life, and the victory of this day is the starting point and foundation of the pro-life movement. The gift of life, placed in our hands today, is what we proclaim, celebrate, and serve. We announce and apply this victory to every segment of our society. We say to our culture, in effect, "Hurry up! God has accomplished His work, and we must run to share in its fruit! God's design for life is unfolding in a definitive way, and this is our chance to catch hold of it and participate in it!"

Never doubt the victory of life, and always find in the resurrection your strength to continue defending this greatest of all gifts! https://www.priestsforlife.org/resources/eastermessage.htm

When Business “As Usual” Isn’t

Conversations are happening in every corner of the Center as our staff serves “virtually” by phone and face to face in the exam rooms. It’s certainly not business as usual in terms of how we serve. But nothing has really changed about why we serve.

Sadly, abortion workers in Pittsburgh and across the country will show up for work today, tomorrow, and the next day. The local Planned Parenthood has suspended all

other services to assure that they can perform as many abortions as possible during this outbreak. Think of that: 100% of Planned Parenthood’s resources will be allocated toward abortion services. Fearful mothers will be influenced and manipulated by panic and deceit and dozens of children will die.

These abortion staffers are not typical medical professionals. They are both greedy for gain and are (however misguided) “true believers” in the abortion mission with a strong enough faith in their agenda to risk infection in the face of what is called a “deadly virus”.

As Christians, we should outdo that kind of zeal and commitment. Nothing has really changed. We continue to trust in the Almighty God. We should be greedy to save lives as true believers in God’s unlimited power. As Christians, this is what we live for, an opportunity to see God do miraculous things in impossible situations.

As His first responders, all who are able should rush in to save lives even if it might place us at risk, We are seeing even more pregnancy tests and sonograms than usual. This means that more lives are being saved during these unusual times. Many women and men facing an unplanned pregnancy are fearful and need to talk things through. They are so grateful for our caring staff and open doors during an already stressful time. As the national crisis deepens and the debate about “essential” and “life sustaining” businesses escalates, we are more convinced than ever that WCN needs to be open for our clients as much a possible.
