Blood marks a union with God To grasp what these readings have to say to us, we must take account of the profound symbolism blood had for old Israel – not a symbol of violence, but the sacred embodiment of life. As Moses ratified the old covenant with Yahweh, therefore, the blood – sprinkled on the altar (representing God) and on the people – expressed the life-giving union with God that was to become the very destiny of Israel. For many people, the blood of Calvary has been associated almost exclusively with Christ's horrendous suffering. While not denying that awareness of the Saviour's passion is essential to Christian faith, the message of the Scriptures invites us to enlarge our perspective. The Church has always seen the Eucharistic banquet as a foretaste of the joys of the Kingdom. Today's liturgy, therefore invites us to reflect upon a theme of great importance for the renewal of the Church's liturgy. The Eucharist is far more than Christ's “real presence” among us, as a kind of substitute for the fact that he is no longer among us as he was in his earthly life. In its fullness, the Eucharist is an action (“Take and eat,” “Take and drink,” “Do this”). It is the central action of the Church's life because of the presence of the Lord himself, giving himself into the hands of his Father, as creation's perfect act of worship, and giving himself to us as food and drink, that we may make his Paschal Mystery our nourishment for eternal life. The Pastor’s Pen

A growth area in the life of the Church is Baptism. Parents make the choice on behalf of their child to be baptised. God Parents undertake the responsibility to be Christian role models and supporters of the Parents, while Parents are recognised as the first and best teachers in the ways of faith for their child.

The Parish offers support to Parents at this special time, assisting with preparation, a time of learning and sharing. Often parents when asked ‘why have your child baptised?’ will share from their own experience, it is important to have Christian goals and values to strive for while being part of a wider faith family.

Baptism deals with faith, yes it is a ritual and faith is the common treasure of the Church, through Baptism the newly baptised becomes part of that treasure, to be discovered and embraced as one grows to maturity.

This week candidates from the Parish received the Sacrament of Confirmation, all came forward to Fr Frank for the laying on of hands and the anointing with the oil of chrism, in doing so they were confirming the Baptism they had received some years previously. Confirmation is a ‘yes’ to Baptism.

Sharing Light in Uganda

The life of a teenage girl in Mannya, Uganda, is very different to the life of a teenage girl in Australia. Living in a region with one of the highest HIV/AIDS infection rates in the world, and with many losing one or both parents to the disease, just getting an education presents many hurdles.

Bishops tell politicians, ‘Don’t mess with marriage’.

Pope Francis offers advice to engaged couples.

Parents of St Benedict’s ‘little miracles’ tell the Mater story of their twins’ survival.

Sharing The Tradition Just as the Jewish Passover not only recalled the Exodus experience but made it present again, so too does the Eucharistic celebration of Christians. The Eucharist celebrates and makes present the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus and calls us to live this sacrifice in our own lives each day. Every time   Christians   celebrate   the   Eucharist,   the   reality   of   Jesus’          sacrifice is before them. To it they join their own sufferings, joys and preoccupations. Through it they bind themselves closer to God and commit themselves to the covenant. This covenant demands that they too must give their lives for others. Saying ‘amen’   to   the   body   of   Christ   means   we   become   what   we   ear!    There are huge implications to this.

Symbols and Images For the Jewish people, blood was the life force of any creature. It was not to be shed indiscriminately. Today we speak of blood brothers or blood being thicker than water to show a particularly close tie. To shed blood, sweat and tears is to invest one’s whole being in a person or project. Here Jesus consecrates his blood as the blood of the new covenant—a new way for humans to be in relationship with God. (Source: The Summit)
