CLAPHAM & DISTRICT NEWSLETTER Number 95, June, 2015 The Parish Council met on 28th April and 26th May The Parish Council is investigating the possibility of obtaining a community defibrillator. Cllr Elphinstone is researching the various options. However, a defibrillator is only effective when used in conjunction with CPR. As such, we need to recruit a group of volunteers willing to be trained in CPR. The training is not difficult. If you are interested then please contact the Clerk, Gillian Muir, on [email protected] or 51775. The proposal to obtain a defibrillator has evolved from the development of a community emergency plan that should be finalised soon. The owner of the former Dalesview Garage site, McConnell Homes Ltd, has submitted detailed planning drawings on the appearance, means of access, landscaping, layout etc to Craven District Council (CDC). The parish council is broadly supportive of the plans but strongly objected to the installation of an electronic gate at the entrance to the development which is not in keeping with the village. A decision on the plans has yet to be reached by CDC. Peter Everson has been appointed as the new Parish Caretaker. Peter will carry out maintenance work around the parish e.g. leaf clearances works, maintenance of council assets e.g. benches, market cross, millennium stone, litter control in public areas. If you have any tasks that you would like the caretaker to carry out, please contact the Clerk (details below). Colin Price and John Dawson were re-elected as Chairman and Vice-Chairman. Sudan Church Associationthe Venerable michael paget-wilkes retires in June as Chairman of the sudan Christian association (SCA) and these are some of his reflections: “the part of my ministry in sCa that i have most appreciated has been in Khartoum, Juba and their surrounding areas to stand alongside and serve south sudanese and sudanese seeking to claim and reflect the love and power of Christ. The many faithful worshippers meeting each sunday, usually in congregations underpinned by the Mothers’ Union, are outstanding witnesses to us in the West. most of my african ministry, as an agricultural Development worker, centred around swahili speaking countries, and it is these last 18 years of involvement in the Sudans that has meant most to me. I am deeply indebted to John Horton of Tear Fund for sending me out to Khartoum to troubleshoot for them in Sudra with Butrus, Levi, Ezekiel, and Enoch, and key partners such as Angus of Tear Fund, Phil of Christian Aid and the Archbishop of Lambeth. Bringing the Cross of Nails from Coventry Cathedral to Khartoum and Kadugli Cathedrals supporting the continuing search for peace and reconciliation were also significant moments. in many ways, news from the sudan is not encouraging. Continuing unrest and fighting in South Sudan, conflicts in Darfur, uncertainty in abyei and the Nuba mountains and increasing signs of persecution of Christians in sudan, all show the depressing nature of their civil societies. On the other hand, the life of the Church, far from declining under pressure, continues to reflect real signs of encouragement. It is the Churches which take the lead in social development in South Sudan. It is the Churches which call for peace and reconciliation between tribal groups. It is the Church leadership which calls for a resolution to the border conflicts. it is the Church which refuses to be intimidated by an oppressive islamic Government, speaking out for all minorities in this time of transition and uncertainty. Being a part of this movement breaks down the insularity and parochialness that can so easily pervade our own Church of England life. So i leave with strong, healthy signs of spiritual life all around me.” Revd Tim Lewis, Vicar of St Philip’s, Girlington, Bradford, adds: “As the worldwide Church cele-brates Christ’s resurrection, we pray for new life in the Christian community in Sudan. There have been some green shoots of hope recently with the formation of the internal province and words of

support by the governor of Khartoum at archbishop Ezekiel’s consecration service. However the situ-ation remains very hard, other Churches have been closed, and the president has approved new legislation to make Islamic sharia law the official legal code of the country, further marginalising Christians. rt revd hassan has recently been appointed Assistant Bishop of Kadugli. This appointment is a great blessing for the diocese as their Bishop Andudu cannot freely travel in sudan and must minister from Juba, South Sudan. Please pray for Hassan as he takes up this new and challenging role. The fighting and instability in South Sudan has a large impact on sudan, with refugees crossing the border into Kadugli and Wad Medani dioceses. Pray that the Church will be able to support these desperate people, who have suffered so much in recent years, and that the violence ends swiftly and decisively. One of the worst aspects of the civil war in south Sudan is the use of child soldiers. Children are often captured from refugee camps and forced to commit horrendous acts of violence and witness things no child should. Many churches are involved in trauma counselling and prayer for healing”. The new Diocese of West Yorkshire and Dales is continuing its links with all those dioceses previously linked with the Diocese of Bradford, Ripon & Leeds and Wakefield. This is especially good as our 30+ year link with Sudan is strong and in good shape. my dear friends, we are so fortunate to be Christians living in such a safe country; do pray for sudan and the Christian Church during the coming months and years. Blessings to you all ian

Our community shop has been open now for a little over two months and we are really pleased with how well things are going. Helen, our full-time shop manager, has done a great job in getting the shop stocked with a good range of products, helping to train other staff and volunteers, and quickly getting things running smoothly and effectively. we knew that solely depending on volunteers to keep the shop open at weekends was likely to be difficult to sustain but, thanks to an unexpected and substantial purchase of shares, we have been able to recruit ruth tonkin and Nicola eyles to cover the weekends. (Nicola will be leaving in mid-June but she’s been a great help and we wish her well.) We are also employing Tara Wilson for five hours a week to help with our bookkeeping. So the shop has quickly become a local employer, providing reasonably-paid employment for local people, a great achievement in itself. and all of our volunteers have been brilliant – serving customers, keeping the shop well-stocked and clean, baking delicious pastries every day and generally just providing huge practical support. Of course it would be great to have more volunteers, as sometimes it can be tricky filling every shift, so if you can offer a few hours please have a chat with Helen or a volunteer already helping at the shop. as well as providing a friendly and welcoming service, the shop has to offer the right products at the right prices, and we think we are doing well on all fronts. The range of products is very impressive, prices are very competitive, and it’s a nice place to shop. It would be quite easy to do most of a weekly shop, but whatever you spend your support for the shop will be very welcome. At our first annual general meeting the current management committee will step down and a new committee will be elected by shareholders. Not all of the founding members will be standing for election – for personal reasons, or because the management committee now needs new members with different skills, or simply to give others an opportunity to get more involved – so we will need enthusiastic members to stand for election and help manage the shop into the future. The AGM will be on Wednesday, 1st July, starting at 6.30pm in the Village Hall. All are welcome but only shareholders can vote. You can become a shareholder by buying just one share – shares are £10 each (you can buy between one and 1000!). For further information please phone Eddie Leggett on 015242 51030,

or visit claphamvillagestore.co.uk, or pick up a prospectus from the shop. You don’t need to be a shareholder to tell us what you think about the shop, though. We really want to know your honest thoughts – what you like and dislike, what works and what doesn’t, what we should be selling, and so on. Please do let us know. we are keen to make good links with the school and so we have asked the children to come up with a colourful design that will be reproduced on hessian ‘bags for life’. These will be available to buy soon. the shop has been supported by several organisa-tions but special thanks goes to the Yorkshire Dales millennium trust, which has provided a lot of help and access to resources, without which we wouldn’t have got so far so soon. Our application for a post office licence was approved by Post Office Ltd. earlier this year but actually getting the contract signed has taken longer than we had expected. We hope that this will happen soon and, if so, we should be providing post office services by September. The counter will go to the left of the main counter and it will be open whenever the shop is open. with the summer approaching, and as we have got excellent staff and volunteers in place, we have reviewed our opening hours. From 1st June they will be: Mon-Wed 8am–5.30pm; Thursday 8am–7pm; Friday 8am–6pm; and weekends 8am–3.30pm. We would like to extend the weekend hours further but we cannot do this unless we recruit more volunteers. let’s make sure the shop is a success – please use it! Dales Jam to perform at st. James’ Church

Dales Jam will play at St. James’ Church on Sunday 7th June at 7.30pm. the great american composer of secular and sacred music Duke ellington was once asked to categorise his music. His reply was, “There are only two kinds of music, good music and the other kind.” Taking into account audiences’ reactions, I reckon Dales Jam’s music definitely falls into the former category. The band is now twelve years old. Its members travel from across North Yorkshire to play together. the essential thing is that it is a community based organisation where everyone is welcome. We play every Monday evening at Ermysteds School. We don’t hold auditions, and whatever your playing standard is, you can always learn. People work out for themselves whether it is right for them or not. We now have a pool of about thirty five players, but we always need more. Ask on the night about how you could be a part of it. We currently have three programmes. The first, which will be what you will hear, is wide ranging. expect music from Delius, south america, ethiopia, italy… the second is a marching band for galas and parades, with music from New Orleans to african beats. The third is home grown and Yorkshire based.

The result of a BBC award, Dales Jam combined with young players from settle and richmond to write music for silent films, both documentary and comic, from the Yorkshire Film Archive. We have just performed this in Bradford Cathedral. In 2007, we managed to persuade Victoria Hall, Settle and NYMAZ – the North Yorkshire Youth Music Action Zone – to give us a home, and funding respectively, for RAMJam. This is a youth version of Dales Jam for eight to eighteen year olds. Then, all music funding was very biased to the east and we felt it was time to spread some over this way. Several young RAMJammers from Clapham and Newby have participated in one or other of the bands. Caitlin Storey, Mollie Bratt, the Harrisons, Bedfords, Williamses, Gateses and morrisons and more have all been members and some of them will be playing on June 7th. At a time when arts funding is being cut back, we are very excited to have secured ramJam funding from NYMAZ for the next three years. is Dales Jam a band, an orchestra or an ensemble? whatever it is, one of the critical factors is its leader. Musical director Richard Ormrod’s extraordinary musicianship and an ability to make the music a coherent force given an inevitable

range of abilities is quite extraordinary. He is a player of many instruments and leads not only Dales Jam and RAMJam, but a similar set-up in Darwen. he is a much sought after performer and has at least three of his own groups. He can even sometimes be seen playing with the Black Horse Jazzmen at the Lion in Settle. He was made Musician of the Year at Jazz Yorkshire’s final awards ceremony in 2012. Interval refreshments will be available. Tickets are a very reasonably priced £5.00 and £2.00 for Under 14s. These are available from: Sue Mann 015242 51792 and Liz Mason 015242 51319, or at The Village Shop, or on the door on the night. early booking is advised, and the organisers love it if you buy your tickets in advance. Thanks to the Church for the invitation to play there. Dales Jam is really looking forward to playing for you. Once when submitting an application for a grant, the Arts Council Officer criticised my inclusion of quotes from players about the enjoyment they felt while participating. Players’ enjoyment was not considered a reason suitable for funding! Nevertheless, we will be there on Sunday, June 7th, enjoying playing together and hoping that you will all come along and share our enjoyment.

The wedding of Julia Balchin and Charles Newsham took place on Friday, 15th May at St. James’ Church, Clapham. Julia grew up in Ireby at her parent’s farm with her sister Christine and brother David, where she developed her love of the countryside, and her love of animals whilst helping on the farm. Julia works as a carer and is out in all weather carrying out an often unseen but crucial service. Charles, son of the late Doris and George has lived in Clapham all his life, is self employed

and does various electrical work. Julia and Charles are very grateful to Jenni, louise, michael, David and Christine for all their help and support. Also, many thanks to all their friends for making a special day truly memorable, with an abundance of gifts and good wishes cards. On top of all this, thanks to alan and his team who made the day perfect with superbly cooked and effortlessly food for all. with grateful thanks to all. Julia and Charles.

Clapham Playparkthe playpark is maintained entirely by volunteers and it would be great if more parents who have children who play there got involved. The playpark needs mowing and strimming about once a week, which takes two people only about an hour, but availability of volunteers and good weather don’t always coincide so new faces would be very wel-come. If you’d like to help in some way please con-tact Don on 51775. to cover insurance and other costs we need to raise around £700 each year. We’d like to thank James and rachael atkin, who did a great fund- raising gig at the New Inn on 28 March. We also want to replace the old wooden shelter with a new one, so on 23 May we held our second ‘house-to-house flea market’ to raise further funds to add to the money raised for a shelter through last year’s flea market. The new shelter should be installed in time for the summer holidays.

sCanDimoot Comes to ClaPham

Throughout the first weekend in May, Clapham Village hall resounded to the sound of scandinavian music and dance, Scandimoot was back! They came to Clapham for the same weekend as last year, to run a series of workshops and public performances of Swedish music and dance. This year it was Norwegian music and dance. On the Saturday there was a public concert in the Victoria hall in settle, while on the sunday there was a public performance in Clapham’s St. James Parish Church. Some of the rhythms were unusual to an english ear, as were some of the instruments to an English eye. There was the hardanger fiddle with its beautifully decorated body. And the hurdy-gurdy with its little

crank handle at one end. And the strangely named nyckelharpa with its keys and 16 strings. In St. James the dancing was sedate and stately, in the Victoria hall some of it was incredibly energetic, athletic, somewhat akin to Cossack dancing. At ingleborough hall, where some of the workshops took place, we eavesdropped on skilled Norwegian musicians taking their english students through the finer points of the fiddle music, slowly at first then faster and faster until they had it at their finger tips, so to speak. At times they would be joined by a concertina, latmandola or accordion. there was a class for beginners and an intermediate class for those with a little more experience. Tutors for the weekend were Mari Eggen on fiddle, Nina Fjeldet on fiddle, Marit Falt on fiddle and latmandola, Sigurd Johan Heide on dance, Sigrun Dyvik Berstad on dance, fiddle and hardanger fiddle and Ingrid Schei Stuhaug on hardanger fiddle. in Clapham village hall the more festive event was part performance and part entertainment, with different groups of musicians taking the floor in seemingly spontaneous order as the dancers waltzed, circled and pirouetted to their tunes. Clapham folk joined one of the dances, in which a crocodile of dancers wound its way into Crosshaw lane and back into the warmth of the hall. it was a wonderful weekend and wonderful entertainment. It is to be hoped that Scandimoot will find the money to come to Clapham again in 2016.

Letter to the EditorDear siri refer to my application under the licensing act 2003 to extend the trading hours at the New Inn, Clapham to 24 hours daily. i wish to assure your readers that it is not my intention to actually trade 24 hours a day. i am making the application primarily because the New inn has been successful in attracting a large number of Corporate clients who have requirements to celebrate past the times the inn is legally allowed to serve alcohol. the extension to our trading hours will have no impact on the village whatsoever. i would welcome the opportunity to discuss this matter in person with any concerned resident of Clapham. Please phone me on 015242 51203. Yours sincerely Lesley Ryton-Benson, New Inn, Clapham

It was a lovely sunny, spring afternoon, 21st April, 2015. Ten lovely people had turned up to clear away the litter accumulated along the grass verges over the winter months. Their figures could be seen energetically foraging among the trees beside the A65 (and elsewhere), backs bent over bulging sacks as they collected glass bottles, plastic bottles, drinks cans, tins, a plastic bread tray, an amazing variety of items discarded by thoughtless passing motorists or by our travelling visitors. To add insult to injury, on the day a bag of biscuits was thrown out by the driver of one lorry, scoring a direct hit on one of Clapham’s noble volunteers as it sped by – to cap it all the lorry was a highway maintenance vehicle! On the good side some useful items were found, later to be cleaned up and pressed into service, such as a couple of good stainless steel saucepans, some stainless steel cutlery, a torch and a fifty pence piece. All in all, we gathered 18 sacksful of assorted

litter in just two hours. In that short time we scoured the carpark and all the roads in the village, as well as the roads leading from the village centre to the A65 and much of that part of the A65 that runs past Clapham. It was a collaborative event. Craven District Council provided some of the litter picking tongs as well as plastic sacks for the litter. They also collected the sacks full of litter on the following day. Clapham Development association organised the litter pick and provided the rest of the litter picking tongs, the Keep Britain Tidy Group provided the high visibility tabards and, most vital of all, the good people of Clapham did the work. Clapham and its beautiful surroundings are now a little tidier. It would be nice to think that Clapham’s roadsides will remain clear of litter but somehow i think that the job will need doing again in a few month’s time, unless . . .

Wildlife in Clapham

The Ring ouzel belongs to the thrush family and is about the same size as the Blackbird. The male Ring ouzel is jet black with silvery markings on the wings and it has black legs and a yellow bill; the main distinctive feature of the male ring ouzel is the white crescent on its upper breast; the female ring ouzel is similar to the female blackbird but it has more silvery markings in its plumage; it also has a faint white crescent on its upper breast. Ring ouzels are a summer migrant and they breed in gullies on moorland, mountains, around hill farms and on the fringes of forestry plantations; they are a shy bird and don’t like disturbance; a

few breed around the Bowland hills but none breed on the hills around here as they are busy with walkers. Around the Clapham area it is mainly a migrant passing through the local area, I normally see one or two at Clapham Bottoms or Thwaite Scars. This year has been a good year for migrant ring ouzels around Yorkshire. I saw my first above Clapham Bottoms on the 17th april and three were found together between Trow Gill and Gaping Gill on the 23rd April. the summer migrants have arrived back to the local area; the first swallows were seen by Alan Price at Long Bank Farm, Keasden on the 4th April and the 7th April and after that the numbers of Swallows started to build up slowly. an early house martin was seen around Clapham for several days from the 7th April and by early may they were back at their usual breeding sites.

During the hot 4th week of april a single swift spent two days around Clapham from the 23rd April. This is two weeks earlier than the normal arrival date for Swifts. Our local breeding Swifts and migrating birds that were passing through started to arrive back from the 2nd May. Rob Garnet saw and heard the first cuckoo above Keasden on the 23rd April and he told me that it was six days earlier than he would normally see them; one other Cuckoo was seen flying over Hardacre Moss on the 10th May. Other summer migrants that arrived back around the local area were willow warbler – 10th April, chiffchaff – 7th April, blackcap – 9th April, sand martin over Clapham Moor – 6th April, three redstarts at Trow Gill – 17th April, two dotterels on Ingleborough – 24th April, sedge warbler at Newby Moor – 10th May, grasshopper warbler at Newby Moor – 10th May, the first spotted flycatcher of the year was at the Show Cave – 8th May and a migrant Whimbrel flew north over Meldingscale farm on the 10th May. All the early common butterflies have been seen around the local area these were small tortoiseshell, peacock, comma, large, small and green veined whites and orange tip, also one male Brimstone was seen at Ingleborough hall on 23rd April.
