AN EVENING OF LESSONS AND CAROLS This Sunday, December 20 beginning at 6 pm join us for an evening of beautiful Christmas music and Scripture readings followed by a reception. This is a wonderful way to take time out from the shopping and holiday preparations and center your mind and heart on Christ. Admission is a snack to share. KROGER CARDS Remember to use your Kroger cards as you do your holiday food shopping this year! We are grateful to all those who have purchased and used Kroger cards though this program. For just the few moments it takes to pre-load your card, OLPH reaps great financial benefits. FREE MONEY— just for buying products you were going to buy anyway! If you have a card, please remember to use it whenever you shop at Kroger! If you do not have a card, the Knights are in the commons monthly to make the cards available for you. Thank you! IS GOD TRYING TO GET YOUR ATTENTION? Do you find yourself attending Mass and feel drawn to the Catholic Church? Do you feel a hunger for something more in your life, but you’re not sure what? Or a persistent, nagging sense that you should do something spiritual? God may be quietly but constantly calling you through other people or situations to inquire about the Catholic faith. For more information, call Tommy Denton at 343–0027 or Diane at the parish office, 387-0491, ext. 303.

THE GREAT ADVENTURE CONTINUES

We continue reading for Lesson #22, “The Church, Part 2”: Acts 8:5–15:35. Additional readings and references include: 1 Timothy 1:12–17, Mt 15:11 and 15:19–20, and the Catechism #’s 880–892. We will meet again after the holidays, January 9 – 13, giving us a long time to complete the reading. Try using these Scriptures as part of your Advent prayer, reading and reflecting on these passages and the presence of Christ in your life.

The first Christmas crib was assembled by Francis of Assisi in 1223 in a cave on a windswept Italian mountainside. Its only occupants were the Christ Child, placed on an altar of stone, and two live animals -- an ox and a donkey. The idea behind the crib was to make the story of Christ's birth more vivid in the minds of shepherds and farmers who lived there. The townspeople were very enthusiastic -- they were the ones who suggested the ox and donkey.

Fact:

THE OLIVE BRANCH NEEDS YOU! We are still looking for someone to take over the ministry of the Olive Branch bookstore and gift shop. We also need volunteers to cover the Saturday shift from 10 am—1 pm and possibly Sundays before and after Mass and subs to cover occasional shifts.

With enough volunteers, the commitment for these shifts will not be for every week.

The current store hours are: Wednesdays 1–4 pm & 4:30–7 pm Saturdays 10 am–1 pm & 4:30–7pm

Sundays before and after Mass.

If you are interested and are willing to commit to any shift at any level (weekly, biweekly, etc.), please call Elizabeth Zirkle in the parish office at 387-0491.

DECEMBER 20, 2009

A Thought from St. Teresa of Avila “Christ has no body now on earth, but yours; no hands but yours; no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which He is to go about doing good; yours are the hands with which He is to bless people now.”

The Wonderful Gift of Humor...

A catechist decided to have her 2nd grade class memorize Psalm 23, one of the most quoted passages in the Bible. She gave the children a month to learn the chapter.

One little boy was excited about the task, but he just couldn't memorize the Psalm. Although he practiced and practiced, he could hardly get past the first line. The day came for the children to recite Psalm 23 before the class. The little boy was nervous. When his turn came, he stepped up and proudly said, "The Lord is my Shepherd and that's all I need to know!"

JOHN OF THE CROSS

Priest & Doctor of the Church

St. John of the Cross grew up near Avila in poverty. His father died when he was young, and his widowed mother struggled to support the family. Shortly after his ordination in 1567, he met Teresa of Avila and was drawn into her reform of the Carmelites. The reform set Carmelite brother against brother, and John was even imprisoned, but he used the time to write the Spiritual Canticle. For this and his other great work, Dark Night of the Soul, he is considered one of the greatest poets to write in Spanish.

His feast day is December 14.

Stewardship is organizing your life so God can spend you. Lynn A. Miller

WHEN GOD GIVES US LIFE, WE DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH TIME

WE HAVE TO USE THAT LIFE.

BUT, WHATEVER TIME WE HAVE IS A GIFT FROM GOD

AND WE ARE CALLED TO USE IT WISELY

IN EVERY ACTIVITY THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
