I used to pray for answers, but now I’m praying for strength. I used to believe that prayer changes things, but now I know prayer changes us and we change things.” -St. Mother Teresa NOTES FROM FR. VANDEWALLE Holy Day August 15 th (and its vigil) is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, body and soul into heaven by God; for it was fitting that Mary, who was without sin from her conception, did not suffer the effects of original sin. What a wonderful mother Jesus shares with us! One of the greatest gifts we have is to be able to turn to Mary often for her motherly help. Save the Date for St. John’s outdoor cleanup – Volunteers from St. John’s parish and school will be cleaning up and mulching the School, Church and Rectory landscaping and grounds on Friday evening, September 6 th starting at 5pm. Painting and final clean-up will be on Saturday morning September 7 th . This will include hand-rails and perhaps play-lines on the basketball court. Bring rakes, wheelbarrows, chainsaws and hedge trimmers if you have them available. Any and all help is much appreciated! Please call Kristy Fortik at 402-510-6333 if you have any questions. Almost School School will start soon, after the different rhythms of summer and sun fun. As parents reorient their children to a school schedule, with “early to bed and early to rise…” it is a good reminder that there is also a rhythm to a daily prayer life, wi thout which our souls are like discombobulated young children, not knowing the peace God wants to give us. Diocesan Canoe Trip Along with stubbed toes, skinned shins, and sunburned faces, the diocesan canoe trip was not only the greatest of fun and fellowship, but also of inspired experiences of God. Along the way, the 40-some canoes tie up together on the bank and hear talks from Fr. Homes about why God is so very loveable and true happiness comes from giving our lives to Christ. Among those words, Fr. Homes, our fearless leader, talked about two kinds of people. Of those who have experienced the canoe trip with all its wonders, one kind of people are now living an inspired and generous Faith life. For example, one couple now married and serving God in the Church first met as High School youth on the canoe trip. On the other hand, some have lost their “early love of the faith” and gone the “way of the world.” For example, he also knew of someone else who, only a few years removed from the great exp erience of the canoe trip, considered himself atheist. Fr. Homes said each of us could lose our Faith also unless we pray and actually get to know Jesus, even starting with a decade of the rosary each day. The next day one of our newly ordained priests gave his vocations story. Though he had grown up with an atheist dad and Buddhist mother, they had sent him to Sacred Heart School in Lincoln so the sisters could educate him and he would not get in the same trouble as his older brother. He eventually chose to become Catholic himself despite great obstacles and experienced a profound love from God. Through sufferings he became angry at God and wandered away, becoming atheist and challenging Christians, until one day, friends invited him to help at a youth retreat. There, before Jesus in the Eucharist, he poured out all his anger before God … then … he felt an overwhelming Love as never before and realized that God was real and he gave himself fully to God.

A LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR A scientist went to God and said triumphantly, "We've worked out how to make a man without you." God laughed and said, "Okay

then, show me. Go ahead..." So the scientist bent down and picked up a handful of dirt but God stopped him. "Oh no you don't. "

said God. "Get your own dirt."

SPIRITUAL CORNER “Dear Jesus Eucharist, I am so very, very happy that you have come into my heart. Never leave my heart, stay for ever and

ever with me.” -Venerable Antonietta Meo “Nennolina”

NOTES FROM FR. VANDEWALLE Mission Coop Appeal – Cash or checks made out to St. John’s or St. Vitus indicating “Mission Appeal” may be submitted in

the envelope. Thank you for the generous hospitality and support given the Fr. Joseph Srambical from India who shared with

us about the needs of the missionary work of the Vincentians, including their homes for intellectually disabled, the elderly,

and Catholic school. One story he shared: At his mission (where he arrived without knowing their language) four men broke

into his quarters and threatened him, trying to get money. He had a rod to defend himself after they broke down his room

door. With a metal bar they broke his finger as they knocked the stick from his hand and hit his arm with which he was

defending his head. Of course he was scared for his life. They wanted money of which he had little. When they had started

to break in, he had called a parishioner who grabbed a buddy and drove over ASAP. So when the lookout saw their arrival the

band took off. Father said God still had something for him to do. How blessed we are to live in the safety we do. Fr. Joseph

and I shared a week which we enjoyed experiences of the people and our culture, the agriculture, rodeo, demolition derby, and

many people at the fair as well as Boys Town (from which he will bring back many ideas to apply to the families and youth he

serves there), the Cathedral, Bob Kerry Bridge, and probably much more… We also watched some great Catholic videos

(especially Bishop Barron and relics) and enjoyed praying and food, including delicious cukes, kolache, and sweet corn from

parishioners. Please remember him and his Vincentian religious order in your prayers. It is a very noble desire to give

ongoing support to a missionary; however, each missionary that comes to our parish needs your help. Therefore, please help

support the larger missionary needs of the universal Catholic Church by supporting the different missionary dioceses or orders

who give appeals in our parish each year and by supporting all the dioceses and parishes who cannot even afford to send a

missionary to this country by supporting the World Mission Sunday collection on the third Sunday of October.

send him a card, his address is: Rev. John Cooper, Bonacum House/3301 Sheridan Blvd., Lincoln, NE 68506

SPIRITUAL CORNER “Prayer ought to be humble, fervent, resigned, persevering, and accompanied with great reverence. One should consider that he

stands in the presence of a God, and speaks with a Lord before whom the angels tremble from awe and fear.” -St. Mary Magdalene

NOTES FROM FR. VANDEWALLE The Magnificat books are in the back of church for those who signed up for them.

The Dwight Assumption Parish is having their Annual Czech Dinner today (Sunday, July 28th).

Hosting Fr. Joseph - I have enjoyed hosting many mission priests from India in the past. They are always so gracious and happy

and filled with joy … they even laugh at my humor (please don’t blame them for that). If I’m going to be here when they come, I

like to time it concomitantly with Saunders County fair so they can get a real flavor for the area. Fr. Joseph, who arrived today

(Friday) has already mentioned his appreciation for the agricultural beauty of the area with the bountiful crops and the tremendous

vegetation. He also enjoyed the ladies who picked him up at the airport (thanks again), Dolores Woita and Shelly Mayo, who he

told me were very entertaining. I can tell we’ll have a great time this week before he heads off Thursday to Beatrice, his next of

eight missionary stops in our diocese.

We welcome Fr. Joseph Srambical V.C., a Vincentian Missionary Priest from India to our parish this weekend to participate in

our Annual Missionary Cooperation Plan.

The Vincentian Congregation (V.C.), a Religious Congregation, was founded in Kerala, India in 1904, modeled after the

Congregation of the Mission founded by St. Vincent de Paul. Members of this flourishing Religious Congregation are engaged in

Mission Work in all parts of India and in East Africa and in Peru. Please visit their web site, www.vincentians.in, to learn more

about them. The Vincentian Missionaries need our help to carry out their many missionary, educational and charitable activities in their

missions. They also request our special financial support for the training of young men studying for priesthood. There will be special

collection today to help the good Missionary work of the Vincentian Fathers who are grateful for your needed help. Please keep Fr.

Joseph and all the Vincentian Missionaries in your prayers. Thank you. Envelopes are in the back of church and checks can be made

out to the parish (this weekend or next) indicating they are for the Mission Appeal. Thank you very much for your prayers and

generous financial support. The Vincentian Missionaries keep you and our parish in their prayers and Masses.

From the Lincoln Diocesan Mission Office—All the missionary priests who speak in our parishes have great needs for which they

give the appeal. Some may ask for additional support, such as sponsoring a seminarian or religious for several months, in addition to their appeal at Mass. Our diocesan regulations do not allow this so that people will be able to support the needs of other

missionaries who will give appeals in our parish in the future. There are so many needs to be met from so many different dioceses and religious orders, and we must give each different group a fair chance to receive our support each year. Thanks for your

generosity!

We are very thankful for the memorial gift of $500 to St. John’s parish from George Zavodny according to George’s wish.

Please pray for his happy repose.

We are very thankful for the memorial gift of $440 to St. John’s parish in honor of Rose Furasek from her family. Please pray

for her happy repose.

A LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR Two friends were visiting Annapolis and noticed several plebes on their hands and knees in the courtyard with pencils and

clipboards in hand. “What are they doing?” they asked a senior officer. “Each year the freshmen are asked to determine how many

bricks it took to finish paving this courtyard.” “So what’s the answer?” they asked. “One,” he whispered.

SPIRITUAL CORNER There is in the Sacred Heart the symbol and express image of the infinite love of Jesus Christ which moves us to love in

return. -Pope Leo XIII

NOTES FROM FR. VANDEWALLE Mission Appeal (next weekend): Each year over 150 missionary dioceses and religious orders request permission to come to

our diocese to give an appeal for financial support. This appeal is a major source of funding for these missionaries, and the

monies collected in our parish go directly to that missionary diocese or religious for the poor that they serve. These funds are

used to feed, house and educate the poor and orphans, provide medical care, build churches, schools, clinics, catechetical

training centers, dig wells, etc., and educate candidates for the priesthood and religious life and provide many other

necessities. / All the missionary priests who speak in our parishes have great needs for which they give the appeal. Some may

ask for additional support, such as sponsoring a seminarian or religious for several months, in addition to their appeal at Mass.

Our diocesan regulations do not allow this so that people will be able to support the needs of other missionaries who will give

appeals in our parish in the future. There are so many needs to be met from so many different dioceses and religious orders,

and we must give each different group a fair chance to receive our support each year. Please be generous!

Peter’s Pence—Thank you for your generous support in last week’s Peter’s Pence Collection. St. John’s donated $1,000.00

and St. Vitus’ $330.00 Our contributions will be combined with those from our brothers and sisters around the world to help

Pope Francis provide essential relief to people in need. For more information see www.usccb.org/nationalcollections

God’s children – Recently, upon the occasion of my parent’s 50th anniversary, my littlest sis’s family of eight traveled from

Florida and spent the week at my other little sis’s household of nine. They really spoiled those 13 first cousins who spent the

week in close quarters. They don’t normally get sweet cereal, but that week were eating three bowls in the morning as well as

other normally verboten treats such as ice cream and candy during the days. The moms wanted the cousins to remember the

week, and each other, fondly. The first cousins, who had not seen each other (except via the web) for 10 years became the

best of friends. My two little sisters (not so little any more) enjoyed watching their children interact. Our heavenly Father is

like this. He delights in our delight. He enjoys when His children love each other. Sometimes people will reject religion

because of the “rules”. But in fact every relationship has “rules” whether written or unwritten. It’s these rules that allow us to

love selflessly. God gives these rules that we might love and be happy. They include things like “don’t cheat” on the other;

be generous with the other. These help us to love. My nieces and nephews were able to love each other more because they

had be formed to be generous to others. At one point, one of my nephews said of his first cousin, “Mom, he’s my best

friend.” This made my sisters so happy. Even more so when our heavenly Father sees His children loving each other.

SPIRITUAL CORNER “It is Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness; He is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; He is

the beauty to which you are so attracted; it is He who provoked you with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for

compromise; it is He who urges you to shed the masks of a false life; it is He who reads in your heart your most genuine

choices, the choices that others try to stifle. -Pope John Paul II

“Very often it is grandparents who ensure that the most important values are passed down to their grandchildren, and many people can testify that they owe their initiation into the Christian life to their grandparents.”

— Pope Francis, apostolic exhortation The Joy of Love “Very often it is grandparents who ensure that the most important values are

NOTES FROM FR. VANDEWALLE The Day of the Lord, (Dies Domini), part I - Some years ago, St. John Paul II wrote an “apostolic letter” entitled The Lord’s

Day (Dies Domini in Latin). The Lord’s Day is Easter which returns each week on Sunday. JPII desired the Lord’s Day to

become once again “the heart of Christian life” to help us live the faith to the full. Each Sunday the Eucharist is the

“fountainhead” that feeds and forms the Church. Jesus’ resurrection is at the heart of the mystery of time … Sunday reveals

time’s deeper meaning. For Christians, Sunday is “our day.” Genuine spiritual maturity is needed to distinguish between “the

weekend” (time to rest and relax) and Sunday (time to worship). Here’s some of JPII’s own words from the introduction to

Dies Domini: “Do not be afraid to give your time to Christ. Yes, let us open our time to Christ, that he may cast light upon it

and give it direction. He is the One who knows the secret of time and the secret of eternity, and he gives us “his day” as an

ever new gift of his love. The rediscovery of this day is a grace which we must implore, not only so that we may live the

demands of faith to the full, but also so that we may respond concretely to the deepest human yearnings. Time given to Christ

is never time lost, but is rather time gained, so that our relationships and indeed our whole life may become more profoundly

human.” ~ JP2, 7. I have found what he says to be true in my life; when I’ve given my time to Christ, he has made my other

time much more fruitful, more efficient, more successful, more friendly and more peaceful and enjoyable.

A LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR The moviegoers were waiting in the darkened theater for the upcoming previews to begin. As the screen lit up with a flashy ad

for the concessions, the sound was missing. The unexpected silence continued for several moments. Then, out of the darkness,

an irritated voice in the crowd demanded, “Okay, who’s got the remote?”

Finding blessings – We had a great time as my sister and her husband and 6 children came to visit us from Florida. For her

youngest, 9 years old, it was her first time in Nebraska or seeing her first cousins live. They all stayed with my other sister who has

7 kids at home including a toddler, so 13 kids under one roof. The cousins had a blast! Mahoney state park, seeing and touching

cattle up close, touching stingrays at the zoo, and just having a great time playing together. One day they came up to the rectory,

school and church here. My other sister gave everybody little army men to plant strategically around my house. Did they ever

delight in doing that … and my reaction to finding them … well finding SOME of them so far. I guess they planted between 100 to

150 little warriors. They kept asking me later: “Did you look in the fridge? … in the cupboard … in the microwave???” It is funny

each time I find one in a nook or cranny. Each new one gives me a little smile and a remembrance of my nephews and nieces and

the fun we had. By relation, God can surprise us with little unexpected blessings that we can find all over if we keep our mind and

heart open to them.
