No Coffee Hour today as the Maria Auxiliadora Prayer Group is holding a retreat. Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. The object of this feast is not an event in the life of Christ, but a truth of faith: His real presence in the Eucharist. The feast was added to the liturgical calendar in 1264 by Pope Urban IV to faithfully reflect wonder at this most beautiful of the mysteries of the faith. Today there are two extra elements in our celebration. First, following the Second Reading, we hear the “Sequence for Corpus Christi, Laud O Zion”, which was written by St. Thomas Aquinas (1224-1274). It tells of the institution of the Eucharist and clearly expresses our belief in transubstantiation (the change of substance by which bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus). It is one of five medieval Sequences still in use today. Secondly, this year there will be a bilingual Eucharistic Procession immediately following the final mass of the day (approximately 1:30pm). The custom of a Corpus Christi procession, which had not taken place for more than a hundred years, was restored in 1982 by Pope John Paul II. In his 2016 Corpus Christi homily, Pope Francis reminded Catholics of the unique service offered to communities and society by the restoration of the Procession. When Catholics take their faith, indeed the very object of their faith — in the True Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist — into the public square, he said, they respond to the Lord’s command by giving the food of the Lord’s presence “to the crowds of today.” Processing together in prayer with the Blessed Sacrament, he told those gathered in Rome, is “an act to break open our faith and our lives as a sign of Christ’s love for this city and for the whole world.” Please join us in procession! WE PRAY FOR...

READINGS OF THE WEEK

THE GREATEST GIFT

Today is Corpus Christi, the feast of the Eucharist, a celebration that dates back to the thirteenth century. In some ways, every Sunday is a feast of the Eucharist. In the last century attention to Eucharistic devotions declined, while more people received frequent Communion. Recent efforts to revitalize adoration of Jesus in the Eucharist through Perpetual Adoration, Corpus Christi celebrations, and Eucharistic Congresses have brought us back into balance. At Mass, when we receive Communion we are honoring and celebrating the precious gift of the Lord’s own Body and Blood. Communion is a fulfillment of Christ’s promise to be always with us. And Jesus in the Eucharist always requires a response from us. At the end of every Mass we are sent forth to love and serve the Lord. He gives us his very self—the greatest gift of all—so that we can go Living Stewardship Now Pray for the willingness to make the love of Christ, as shown to us in the Eucharist, present in our world.

Lord Jesus Christ, we worship you living among us in the sacrament of your body and blood.

May we offer to our Father in heaven a solemn pledge of undivided love.

May we offer to our brothers and sisters a life poured out in loving service of that kingdom where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

MASS INTENTIONS

MAY 21 & 22 Offertory: $2,996.63, ACA $300 Attendance: May 21: 68 May 22: 173

“At the end of the Eucharistic celebration we will join in the procession to carry the Lord Jesus through all the streets and neighborhoods of Rome.

We will immerse him, so to speak, in the daily routine of our lives, so that he may walk where we walk and live where we live.

We travel on the highways of the world knowing that he is beside us, supported by the hope of being able to see him one day face to face.

In the meantime, let us listen to his voice repeat,

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears my voice and opens the door,

I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me" (Rv 3: 20).

The Feast of Corpus Christi wants to make the Lord's knocking audible, despite the hardness of our interior hearing.

Jesus knocks at the door of our heart and asks to enter not only for the space of a day but for ever.

Let us welcome him joyfully.”

Pope Benedict XVI June 7, 2007

DEAR FATHER EXPANDING THE WORD SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND

BLOOD OF CHRIST (CORPUS CHRISTI) In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Lectionary’s Year of Luke presents a Gospel in which Jesus, who has welcomed, taught, healed, and shown God’s mercy to the multitude, refuses the Twelve’s demand to dismiss the crowd before him. Instead, he says, “Give them some food yourselves” (Luke 9:13). In Jesus’ hands, what little the Twelve has feeds five thousand (“men,” and probably as many women and children), leaving twelve baskets so the Twelve can continue Jesus’ ministry of mercy. Pope Francis has asked how we celebrate and live the Eucharist. Do we keep it to ourselves? Or do we “commune” not only with Jesus but with the multitude whom Jesus has given us to cherish? Entrusted to Jesus and shared with others, our limited resources can go a long way. Recognizing Jesus in the Eucharist demands that we recognize Jesus also in the hungry crowd. Adoring Jesus present in the Eucharist requires that we serve Jesus present in our neighbor.

MINISTRY SCHEDULE

Stay With Us, Lord

Fr. David Simonetti

Fr. David J. Simonetti was ordained in 2005 as a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago. In an inviting manner, he preaches missions, days of reflection, and retreats with humor and Gospel joy. Fr. Simonetti shares his own account of how the Lord drew him to the priesthood, how he relies upon Christ in the Eucharist, and how Jesus calls each of us to spend time with Him in Adoration.
