ADVENT INVITATION by The Rev. Gayle McCarty

As the season of Advent begins, we watch and wait for the coming of Christ - remembering his birth and anticipating his coming again in glory to judge the living and the dead. To come and make all things right. To come and wipe away every tear. It is in preparing, listening, waiting and watching that we discover or rediscover our deep longing for God. We watch. We wait. Filled with hope. Waiting for the Light. I offer you this Advent poem:

Shadows of Christmas by D. Denise Dianaty

Advent is our Hope against the darkness, Living into the expectation of Christ. Who is the Light born to dispel shadows From the hearts of the People of Advent.

At the center of His holy Nativity are Shadows of pasts, Crucifixion, and Ascension In dark of night, from the dark of the stable Emmanuel, the Light was born at Christmas.

In the shadows of all our Christmases We see shadows of the past behind us, And live the present in the shadows of Hope. In shadows of Hope, look to an eternal future.

ADVENT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION FOR ALL AGES by Mary Beth Seltzer

REFLECTIONS CLASS BY GARY WAKE

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. This prayer, the Collect for Proper 28 in the Book of Common Prayer, is a good reminder for all Christians as we work through studying the Holy Bible. In the Reflections Class, we work on hearing, reading, marking, learning and inwardly digesting the lectionary text for each week so that we can carry the text with us in to the worship service and our lives. We hope you’ll consider joining us when we resume the class next year. In the meantime, we will join the Adult Christian Education program and resume our work on February 24, 2019.

Sundays - 9:30 a.m. December Christian Education is intergenerational! We will meet each Sunday from 9:30-10:15 December 2 (Commons) Making Advent wreaths.

December 9 (Commons) Advent Traditions - Mary Beth Seltzer

December 16 (Parish Hall) Ben and Rachel Guyer will prepare breakfast for us again this year! Come and enjoy food and fellowship. Please make reservations by noon, December 13.

December 23 No Christian Education. December 30 No Christian Education

THANKS AND GRATITUDE BY LEE SPARKS I wanted to extend to each of you that have helped out for the past several Sundays, and especially this past Sunday, my personal thanks and gratitude. Since the departure of Jeff and Trudy, so many of you have helped out, in ways big and small, making this time of transition much smoother than it otherwise would have been. And you have done so with the customary grace and composure I have come to expect.

Episcopalians aren’t known to be hugely evangelizing bunch. But when there is work to be done, rest assured they show up to do it. Looking around this past Sunday, I got a glimpse of the way Christ intended his kingdom to work – people coming together, working together, comforting a family in its time of loss, doing that which needed to be done, each according to the talents the person possessed. Seeing this strengthens my faith in God, and in His presence at St. Luke’s.

I dare not try to thank everyone individually, as I will certainly leave someone out. As I said earlier, so many have helped in ways big and small. So I will close as I began by again saying thank you, to all of you.

In the Love of Christ,

Lee R. Sparks, Senior Warden

2019 ALTAR CANDLE, FLOWER AND SUPPLY CALENDARS Please check the calendars across from the elevator for openings in each of these categories. The 2019 calendars have been posted. Note that we especially need to fill our January 2019 dates quickly. These are meaningful ways by which you can honor or remember your loved ones.

JANUARY PARISH LIFE DEADLINE Due to the holidays, December 14 is the deadline for articles, photos and schedules for the January issue.

SERVICE SHEET CHANGE by The Rev. Gayle McCarty

For the season of Ad-vent, we will use a bare-bones service sheet for both services. Rather than reprinting the en-tirety of our service in each bulletin as we have done in the past, the new service sheet will provide an outline of the service with page numbers to the Book of Common Prayer and Hymnal.

This might be a bit challenging to our newcomers and even those long-time worshipers who simply are not accustomed to navigating the Prayer Book. Please extend holy hospitality by offering assistance to anyone who looks as if they might be a tad lost following the service. This lessens the busyness of the season, aids in the office staff transition, helps us to be better stewards of God's creation by decreasing paper use and waste and most of all, it invites us to hold and behold the many treasures held within our beloved Book of Common Prayer.

OUR BISHOP-ELECT We welcome the Rev. Phoebe A. Roaf as the Bishop-elect of The Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee.

On November 17, during the Annual Convention, Rev. Roaf was elected on the first ballot.

Rev. Roaf is currently the Rector of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Richmond, VA.

For more info. visit the Diocesan web page at episwtn.org.

COLLECTS FOR ADVENT First Sunday of Advent Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Second Sunday of Advent Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Third Sunday of Advent Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Fourth Sunday of Advent Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

STEWARDSHIP GATHERING - 2018

Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen. -Ephesians 3:20-21

Thanks to all those who have already offered their pledge. If you haven’t already turned in your pledge cards, please do so as soon as you are able.

We have a three-prong challenge for everyone this year: 1. Pray about increasing your pledge 2. Commit to invite at least five individuals to church 3. Commit to serve in at least one ministry.
