Today, Sunday Jan. 19th is Sanctity for Life Sunday.

Please pray for a pro-life attitude to take a stronghold in our country and through-out the world.

Church Website We will soon have a new

look to our website. The address will be the same but the way it is set up is different. It will have drop-down menus to choose from. It will still have the same content as the old website. Stay tuned to see when we will go live with it! If you have any questions, you can call Vickie at 228-3164.

Bottineau Co. Right to Life would like to thank all who worked on their lefse pro-ject. Thank you! Thank you! They would also like to then all who bought the lefse and a special thanks to Jason’s Super Foods for helping them sell it! They raised over $1100 to fund future projects!!! So thank you all!!

A special note of thanks to Vickie Gangl and Lois Schaefer who hand crocheted uniquely patterned snowflakes of various sizes for the 15 ft Christmas tree that graced St. Mark’s sanctuary over the Advent and

Christmas Seasons. A number of people remarked to me how attractive they were. I agreed, but thought they were store bought. What astonishment to find out how much of a labor of love they are. Thank you Ladies! Very beautiful.

Taking it upon ourselves. How gradually we come to know ourselves and what we’re about. John the Baptist knew Jesus. They were cousins. However, it wasn’t clear how John knew him.

In today’s Gospel, John calls Jesus the “Lamb of God.” It’s a title we’re especially familiar with from Mass at Communion time.

The Lamb of God comes to take away the sins of the world. Jesus entered the Jordan to show his solidarity with sin-ners. He died on the Cross to demonstrate his dire love that we might be free of our sins.

The lamb figured in much of Jewish tradition. It was a symbol of sacrifice. The shepherd is the one who leads the flock through dark and difficult terrain. The message of John’s Gospel for us—the simple sheep—is to follow Jesus, the shepherd, who leads by becoming a sacrificial lamb.

Parents enter this understanding of Jesus by the way they constantly lead their children and serve them with endless love. When they’re sick or hurt, Mom and Dad would gladly take their pain and suffering if they could. These feelings begin to show what Jesus has done for us. By reflecting on their own parental love, parents get an inkling of what Jesus’ love is for them as well.

The fruits of the Mass come home with us when we show one another mercy. We live what we receive. We lead one another whenever we shoulder each other’s burdens or live sacrificially so that others may flourish. As we act thus, we gradually come to know better who Jesus is, and also who we are in him.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Next week, Word of God Sunday. “The Church has always venerated the Scriptures as she venerates the Lord’s Body. She never ceases to present to the faithful the bread of life, taken from the one table of God’s Word and Christ’s Body” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 103).

A day dedicated to the Bible will help the Church “experience anew how the risen Lord opens up for us the treasury of his word and enables us to proclaim its unfathomable riches before the world. This celebra-tion will invite Catholics across the world to deepen their appreciation, love and faithful witness to God and his word,” Pope Francis said.

I’ve heard ordinary Catholics throughout my priesthood admit that they are not familiar with the Bi-ble. For most, the only time they hear the word of God is when they attend Mass.

Francis wrote that it’s not “a yearly event but rather a yearlong event, for we urgently need to grow in our knowledge and love of the Scriptures and of the risen Lord, who continues to speak his word and to break bread in the community of believers.”

Unfortunately, I will not be here for this “first”. Fr. Andrew Jasinski, Chancellor of the Diocese of Fargo, will take our Masses as I journey to Ohio to baptize my niece’s baby boy, Charlie, born last week, and celebrate my Dad’s golden jubilee of sobriety, Jan 27. May the Word of God keep us united along the way.

Marian Year of Healing—Sacrament of Anointing will be offered after all Masses this weekend.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Jan 18-25. Each year Christians throughout the world gather to pray for that unity Christ so earnestly desired when he prayed to the Father that all would be one (Jn 17:21). The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has a history of over 100 years.

This year’s theme, “They Showed Us Unusual Kindness” finds its origins in the Acts of the

Apostles (Acts 27:18 – 28:10) and emphasizes that it is through this “unusual kindness” that

Christians are united as one. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began as an eight day

period of prayer established by founders of the Society of the Atonement, Mother Lurana

White, SA, and Servant of God Father Paul of Graymoor.
