Memorial Day moment of prayer. Those gathering for the Memorial Day parade in Bottineau are encouraged to gather at the 4 Chaplains Memorial on the corner of 4th & Sinclair at the start of the parade. We are grateful that the organizers of this patriotic event include the witness of these four heroic men of faith. We treasure this noble tradition that honors God and Country.

ADOPT-A-PLANTER - as you may have

heard, Fr. Michael is leaving. And all the planters that he took care of all summer around St. Mark’s church will need tending. If you would like to adopt one or more and provide the flowers for it, contact Vickie in the Church Office at 228-3164 or her cell phone at 871-8576. She is willing to water and fertilize them, you just need to provide the plants!

Blessing upon our Bottineau Seniors who graduate next weekend. Congratula-tions to Madison Agnes, Therese Ha-berman, Lexie Halvorson, Adam Lo-renz, Cody Monson, Mary Peltier, and Ashley Spence.

“Drive by to say Good Bye." Fr. Michael’s last

weekend is Jun 20-21. Originally, he was going to be in Val-ley City that weekend, but plans changed. To respect every-one’s safety and still say “Goodbye!”, we’ll be having an open ’house’ farewell. He will greet well wishers from the lawn of the Rectory from 1-5 P.M., June 21st. There will be a table with drinks and a card

box for notes and farewell cards. Drive by to say good-bye!

May 23rd, 8 pm, Lake Mass begins again until Labor Day.

A Prayer at Planting Time

Dear Lord, you are wonderful in everything you do. In marvelous ways you take the full, rich life of the plant and carefully fold it into tiny seeds. You form the seeds according to many different shapes and sizes and colors, so that man can know what kind of growth will come of them.

When they are placed in the earth they may look dry and dead, but when they are watered by the life-giving rain and nourished by the warm sun, they lose all their lifeless look and grow in an almost miraculous man-ner. By the power you gave them, they take the dead minerals of the earth and build up the nourishing, tasty foods that men need to sustain life.

As we plant these seeds that you have given us, bless them, watch over them and bring them to the full growth and rich harvest that you wish to bless us with.

But, should you not allow them to come to full har-vest, we accept your will humbly. We trust that you will nevertheless watch over us and make the seeds of grace that you have given us grow to flower and fruit in the full Christian life that you intend for us here and hereafter. Amen.

Another kind of gravity. “What goes up must come down” Sir Isaac Newton. The scientist’s statement about gravity has found other extended meanings. Basically, things change. Whatever increases or rises eventually decreases or falls.

For example: “Home prices are subject to the law of gravity,” he said. “What goes up must come down.” –New York Post

Or, “It’s dangerous to discharge a firearm in the air,” said HPD spokesman Victor Senties. “What goes up must come down and usu-ally does so with greater force.” –Houston Chronicle.

Might this work the other way around?

The Feast of the Ascension is a kind of bookend to Christ-mas. On Dec 25, we celebrate the Word made flesh coming to the light of day. The God who is pure Spirit is seen in human flesh. We call this God’s condescension—God came down to be with us. In the

Ascension, God-with-us goes back up.

What happens when what comes down must go up?

The marrying of Matter and Spirit, Humanity and Divinity, reaches its climax in the Ascension. The mission of Jesus reaches not only the ends of the Earth, but even the furthest reaches of the Universe, altering thereby the trajectory of the Universe and every-thing in it. The Ascension highlights the utterly cosmic nature of Jesus Christ. It is actually an ongoing event.

“And I, when lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself” (Jn 12:32). The lifting up of Jesus on the Cross is the beginning of the movement lifting the entire Uni-verse off its hinges. Having ascended—in our flesh—to the Father’s right hand, Jesus has placed the whole cosmos on a new set of hinges. The world henceforth opens up to Heav-en.

Jesus Christ “did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands. . . but Heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf” (Heb 9:24). Our human flesh has en-tered Heaven. Christ, who “always lives to make intercession for those who draw near to God through him” is “high priest of the good things to come” (Heb 7:25). As center of the heavenly liturgy (see Heb 9:11; Rev 4:6-11), Christ henceforth seated at the right hand of the Father, inaugurates the Messiah’s Kingdom, ushering the Universe into Heaven.

“To him was given dominion and glory and kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed" (Dn 7:14).

After this event the Apostles became witnesses of the “kingdom that will have no end” (Nicene Creed).

This Christian vision of the Universe teaches believers in every age the great skill of seeing God everywhere. “Turn a stone and start a wing,” said the poet Francis Thompson. He meant that Angels are hiding everywhere on Earth. Christ’s Ascension turns the key that sets us free to see the world with new eyes. But it takes time and patience.

To find God in all things is an expertise that flows from the feast of the Ascension. By it our hands and hearts and our whole selves belong to the Spirit’s work of drawing all things into Christ’s Kingdom of justice, love and peace.

Human creativity does not threaten God. All our undertakings—gardens and homeruns, banking and research, leisure and labor—belong to the stuff Jesus Christ brings to the Father.

Consequence: all that you handle today, even all that can weigh you down, ascends through faith to Christ at God’s right hand. It’s pulled into Heaven. What comes down (created matter) must go up (spiritually reborn).
