Note from Fr. Colm

Easter brings us to that special time of the year which, we as Christians can call our own. We gather also as ONE parish to celebrate all that we have worked so hard for over these changing times. We are a Christian, Eucharistic community - everything we do in church by way of liturgy, and as part of our enjoying the beginning of Spring. We will have a good rest. Our schools especially - those very hard working teachers deserve that precious rest. Do enjoy. We have our Mini Triduum which is hugely important for the sick and the housebound. Please do support this event. It is at a convenient time. It offers the sacraments plus good company. Carers, parishioners, please keep extra vigilance for those whom you think might wish to come to this event. Well done Kitty Treanor on reaching the wonderful milestone in life of 90 years. It's the Kenmare air. Kenmare is Kitty's place of birth. Mary Black sings that lovely rendition of 'Neidin', which is Gaelic for Kenmare. Worth a listen. AND WELL WORTH WATCHING: Pilgrimage: The Road to Rome. Much better than the lightweight and sentimental Camino celebrity series. Also worth a listen is 'Start the Week' with Andrew Marr. It is a sensitive look at the growing problem of dementia. Get on to that BBC iPlayer. It was on at 9.00am. Our best wishes to Sonia Stoves and Linda Evans on their retirement from St. Thomas More's after many years of generous service. Always kind and welcoming, both will be greatly missed. Bless both in the years ahead. 'The example of how I learnt to value modern art might again be of help here. I became sensitive to some unusual works of art not necessarily because I liked them but owing to their halting power - something Joyce describes in his Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man: 'The aesthetic emotion (I use the general term) is static. The mind is arrested and raised above desire and loathing. Beauty awakens, or ought to awaken, or induces, or ought to induce, an aesthetic stasis called forth, prolonged and at last dissolved by what I call the rhythm of beauty.' From "Touched by God - The Way to Contemplative Prayer" by Luigi Gioia

Confirmation Programme 2019

We are preparing to start the 2019 Confirmation Programme for anyone in Year 9 and above. We hope the sacrament will be celebrated in November at the end of the Programme. If you couldn’t make it to the information meeting, please let the parish secretary know you are interested and one of the team will be in touch. We are holding our first session on 27th April, 3-5pm in the Jubilee Room at St. Joseph’s. All are very welcome to find out more about Confirmation.

The family of Cara Armstrong McKay would like to thank all parishioners for their prayers over the past 18 months. She is now coming to the end of her treatment which is followed by a variety of scans and organ tests, to see if all has ‘worked’. Please keep her

in your prayers for a little while longer as we await these final results next month.

News from Ushaw We have just launched a new exhibition at Ushaw called Hand in Hand: The artistic and spiritual life of Dame Werburg Welch based around the life of Eileen Welch, a Benedictine Nun at Stanbrook Abbey who was a prolific artist during the early 20th century arts and crafts movement. She created wood carvings, prints, paintings and textile designs, and received numerous commissions from parishes across the country. The exhibition showcases a large range of her work and is a collaboration between Ushaw and Stanbrook Abbey in Wass. It runs until the 29th June and Ushaw is open Mon-Sat 11am-3pm. Please visit the webpage: https://sites.google.com/ushaw.org/handinhand/home for more information and photos.

Faith in Action Retreat Day - St. Joseph's Church

On Tuesday 9th April the year 6 pupils of our three primary schools gathered together for

a day of prayer, reflection and interactive activities. We looked at the topics of Servant

Leadership and how we can Build God's Kingdom. The children made some wonderful

sculptures, wrote some thoughtful reflections in their Faith in Action Books and joined

together at the end of the day to pray together for God's kingdom. We also had a visit

from Dominique Finn, the CYMFed Project Officer for the Faith in Action Awards who

came to see the wonderful work our young people have been doing as part of the award.
