Parish Newsletter 25th / 26th March 2017 Fourth Sunday of Lent "Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him." The prevailing theology of Jesus' time led people to believe that any kind of disability was a punish- ment from God. So Jesus' disciples assumed that the man born blind suffered that affliction because of someone's sin: either his parents' or his own. But Jesus sets the record straight. Not only did he reject the idea that the blindness was a punish- ment for sin; he also went so far as to suggest that this very trial was an opportunity for God's glory to be revealed. And sure enough, it was. Jesus worked a miracle of healing for the man who followed his directions and "came back able to see." So it was that the "works of God" became "visible" through a man who was blind! But, ironically, not everyone had the eyes to see the miracle. The Gospel tells us that "there was a division among them" as they debated whether this remarkable healing was re- ally an act of God. Jesus stated that he came "so that those who do not see might see." And so, who are we? Are we blinded by our own expectations of how God is supposed to work? Are we so caught up in our own vision of what we wish would happen that we fail to appreciate what is actually unfolding before our very eyes? It is so easy to perceive trials, disabilities, sick- ness, and misfortune as a curse or the result of being abandoned by God. But today's Gospel suggests another reality. In the midst of these very difficulties, God wants to reveal himself, to show his love and mercy. It may not always be in the exact way we expect, but without a doubt, even in these challenging realms, God is always at work. Fourth Sunday of Lent

"Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him."

The prevailing theology of Jesus' time led people to believe that any kind of disability was a punish-ment from God. So Jesus' disciples assumed that the man born blind suffered that affliction because of someone's sin: either his parents' or his own. But Jesus sets the record straight. Not only did he reject the idea that the blindness was a punish-ment for sin; he also went so far as to suggest that this very trial was an opportunity for God's glory to be revealed.

And sure enough, it was. Jesus worked a miracle of healing for the man who followed his directions and "came back able to see." So it was that the "works of God" became "visible" through a man who was blind! But, ironically, not everyone had the eyes to see the miracle. The Gospel tells us that "there was a division among them" as they debated whether this remarkable healing was re-ally an act of God.

Jesus stated that he came "so that those who do not see might see." And so, who are we? Are we blinded by our own expectations of how God is supposed to work? Are we so caught up in our own vision of what we wish would happen that we fail to appreciate what is actually unfolding before our very eyes?

It is so easy to perceive trials, disabilities, sick-ness, and misfortune as a curse or the result of being abandoned by God. But today's Gospel suggests another reality. In the midst of these very difficulties, God wants to reveal himself, to show his love and mercy. It may not always be in the exact way we expect, but without a doubt, even in these challenging realms, God is always at work.

JOURNEYING THROUGH LENT: We offer you an opportunity to pray the scriptures of the Sunday’s of Lent as a way of making a spiritual journey towards our celebration of Easter.

On Tuesday mornings, in Luisne from 10:45am to 12 midday. You need to register with Luisne for it.

On Wednesday nights, in the Carmelite Monastery, Del-gany form 8 to 9pm. a Taizé prayer service based on the Gospel of the following Sunday. Taizé prayer invites us, through the repetition of simple chant, through gentle lighting, through moments of quiet into a space of reflection and experience of God in our lives.

On Thursday mornings, in Kilian House Family Centre, Greystones from 10:40am to 11.40am. We are praying with the scriptures for the coming weekend Masses.

All welcome to any or all of these different styles of en-gaging with Scripture. All you need to bring is an open heart for the Lord. So don’t be shy.

A TRANSPARENT LIFE: “You are as sick as your sickest secret!” That’s an truism popular among people in 12-step programmes. They know that until one faces oneself, in searing honesty, before another human being and there

acknowledges openly his or her sins, there will always be addictions, rationalisation, and lack of transparency. This is a pivotal and non-negotiable step in every 12-step programme. The Church has always had its own version of this step. We call it the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Fewer people are going to the sacrament these days. This is an unfortunate development because it is one of the pillars of the spiritual life. At a certain point in one’s growth, there is no progress without it. The critics of the sacrament of reconciliation are right in saying that God is not tied to one vehicle as an avenue for the forgiveness of sins. They are wrong, however, when they denigrate its importance. Simply put, it is the sacrament of the mature and one grows mature by confessing one’s sins. One may not need to confess one’s sins explicitly to another human being in order to have them forgiven. But one does have to confess them explicitly if he or she hope to live a transparent life, free of dark skeletons in the closet, and to make progress in the spiritual life.

EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT: Takes place every Sunday 3 - 6pm in Holy Rosary Church & every Thursday after 10am Mass until 11:30, except if there’s a funeral. Exposition in St. Kilian’s Church on Mondays 7am-10pm and Wednesdays 7am - 1pm. All are welcome.

WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES Pope Francis has personally chosen Dublin to be the host diocese for the World Meeting of Families from 21-26 August 2018. Planning for this great national and international celebration of faith is well underway. Hosting this important

event requires an enormous amount of planning and funding. In this regard a second national collection will be held next weekend (1st & 2nd April). Your support for this collection would be greatly appreciated.

HOLY ROSARY SOUP & SANDWICHES Join us for our Soup & Sandwich lunch and a chat on Wednesday 29 March in Kilian House Family Centre: 12.15 – 2pm. Suggested donation €5 (for local charities). All welcome!

SOCIAL HOBBY & CRAFT AFTERNOON - 2ND APRIL Calling all crafters and hobbyists! Come along to share a skill, pick up a new hobby or simply find a friend. Sun April 2nd from 3 - 5.30pm, (time extended!) in Kilian House Family Centre, Greystones. 18 years

DELGANY THURSDAY CLUB On Thursday, 6th April, we will visit Ardgillan House and Gardens, Balbriggan. Coach leaves Delgany Church @ 2pm. Cost €22.00 Some seats available. Ring Noelene Scott @ 2876878

THE CAROLINE FOUNDATION wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to the community of Greystones for supporting our recent fundraiser, GIVE US A SONG marking World Cancer Weekend. We acknowledge with appreciation all who sang, organized events, rattled buckets and promoted Give us a Song! It was a national event & together we raised €42,000.00 for cancer research. We are grateful for the trust you place in us by supporting our fundraiser and it is in that spirit we want to reassure you that, though we are a small foundation, 100% volunteer run, we fund 2 cancer researchers on Prof John Crown's research team. Thank you.
