MESSAGE FROM ARCHBISHOP LONGLEY CONCERNING HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION The following information has been written by the Archbishop to Catholic Schools con- cerning the days of Obligation and how they are to be observed. Our parish has strong connection with the school which means that these requirements might affect our Mass timing in one way or the other. The Archbishop wrote: I want to bring to your attention some important events this year and some practices within the Catholic schools of the Archdiocese that I want to reaffirm. I believe that these events and practices have a really important impact upon the lives of our young people and the opportunity they have to live a life of faith. Recently, the Holy See accepted the request of the Bishops of England and Wales that the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord and the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord should be celebrated on the date proper to them in the liturgical calendar and not transferred to the nearest Sunday except when they fall on a Saturday or Monday. Holy Days of Obligation are moments when the Church rejoices in the great mysteries of her life and faith. They are so important that they must be celebrated with solemn worship and above all the celebration of the Eucharist. This means that during the school year these great feasts may well be celebrated in school term time. I therefore ask that on Holy Days of Obligation, the opportunity is provided in your school communities for pu- pils and staff to attend Holy Mass. I ask that you work with your parish clergy and school chaplains in planning and prepar- ing for these occasions. For some of our priests it will mean providing additional Mass- es. I know they will appreciate your cooperation in being able to find appropriate times for Mass to be celebrated for your school community on these days alongside other Masses and commitments that they may well have to provide for. In some of our sec- ondary schools, the chaplains may well require the help of additional priests and when a number of Masses are required at least one may have to be celebrated as a Vigil Mass on the day before. Again, your help and cooperation in making these arrangements is gratefully appreciated. The Holy Days of Obligation on which you are required to plan for the celebration of Mass with your school community are: January 6 th Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, Thursday of 6 th week of Easter Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord (Thursday 10 th May 2018), June 29 th Solemnity of SS Peter & Paul, 1 st November Solemnity of All Saints END. Would you be interested in being a member of a school admission appeals panel? The Governors of Catholic schools are responsible for convening appeals hearings if requested by a parent or carer who is refused admission to their school. The Dioce-san Education Service recruits and trains individuals to sit on appeals for Catholic schools within the Diocese and is currently inviting applications from individuals who would like to volunteer for this service. The role is voluntary and flexible. However, panel members are free to decide their own availability and it would be entirely your own decision whether to agree to sit on a particular school’s panel or not. If this is a role that you think you might be interested in considering, application forms and fur-ther information can be obtained from: Mrs Rebecca Tonks Admissions and Govern-ance Adviser Diocesan Education Service Coventry Road Coleshill B46 3EA Tel:
