Who, or, what will you remember when we gather later this month inchurches and at cenotaphs?

Who, or, what will you be remembering when you buy and wear yourpoppy?

As the years roll on from the two Great Wars and wars since, specificmemories become harder but not, for some, impossible.

If as many great thinkers and philosophers tell us memory shapes individ-uals and society – then this is a very important season for us. AsChristians, alongside the repeated too often great sacrifices of many inthe time of war, we should be drawn to the greatest sacrifice of the firstGood Friday. The one who commanded us to use our memories who wasto become that Greatest Sacrifice, must play a part in the ‘Who’, or the‘What’, of our remembering.

The world we live in would be a very different place if not for thesacrifice of many – for which we are thankful. The world may not evenbe a place if not for the greatest sacrifice of the one who can redeem usand bring us back to our true Heavenly Father.

I came across this powerful poem for Remembrance Sunday by MalcolmGuite which is powerful and direct.

November pierces with its bleak remembranceOf all the bitterness and waste of war.

Our silence tries but fails to make a semblanceOf that lost peace they thought worth fighting for.

Our silence seethes instead with wraiths and whispers,

And all the restless rumour of new wars,The shells are singing as we sing our vespers,No moment is unscarred, there is no pause,

BALLYMENA CHURCH MEMBERSFORUM - Arts Trail Care forCreation

Nine churches, some local com-munity groups and schools will beinvolved in this project which willattempt to illuminate the crisis inour world today as climate changeand pollution are threatening ourvery survival.

Workshops will be held in Novem-ber and January when the groupsinvolved will work together tocreate posters illustrating theseissues. Some will be throughpaintings others through poetry orphotography.

Assistance will be given by localartists supplied by the Braid ArtsCentre.

Next spring some of the artworkswill be displayed in the town’s busshelters where space has beenreserved and all other work willbe shown in an exhibition in theBraid.

ADVENT

During Advent we will be having ourmid week evening service in Bally-clug. This will take place on thefirst 3 Wednesdays of December –4th, 11th and 18th at 7.30 pm.

Also during Advent, as in the past,the Ballymena Church Members Fo-rum is hosting a series of AdventReflections in 4 of the local church-es. Each lasts about 30 minutesstarting at 12.30 pm.

Monday 21st October was a big day forNorthern Ireland! Did you celebrate orweep? For many it happened ‘underthe radar’ and only in the days after aresome waking up to the reality that thelegal landscape in Northern Ireland willnow change to permit same-sex mar-riages and the legal availability of abor-tion in more cases.

The Christian community has rightlycondemned this legislation withoutproper debate or the consent of thepeople. We recognise the changing values of the society around us butnow fear for what medical professionals and Christian Ministers will beasked to participate in as a result of this coming legislation.

As a frequent visitor to many local primary schools I am aware of theregular and respectful withdrawal of some children from Assembles whichare still for the most part conducted in a Christian context.

The days may not be too far away for Christian parents and children torespectfully withdraw from aspects of school life should they follow theexpected course as a result of the legal changes coming our way.

Society might be changing its mind but the Bible stays the same andnearly all would unite in condemning laws made in this way – NorthernIreland deserves better. I would ask you in the words of Ulster’s greatestmodern exports, Keith and Kristyn Getty (hymn writers and composers)‘to pray for Leaders and Christians in Northern Ireland for compassion,innovation, courage and boldness in conviction. Please be aware andplease pray.

ConfirmationPreparation

It is wonderful to have lots of young people coming along to ConfirmationPreparation on Monday nights in the Rectory. Wehave been using a fabulous resource from theChurch of Ireland Youth Department called ‘I Be-lieve’. This resource is based round the Confirma-tion Service itself. Some of these sessions includetopics like ‘Who is God?’, ‘Why we need a Saviour’and ‘Serving God/Serving others’. These eveningsessions are about learning about faith, God and theBible with a bit of fun and friendship. It’s a greatopportunity for our young people to get to knoweach other better and to learn with and from oneanother.

It is also wonderful to have some adults preparing for Confirmation – howexciting! I am looking forward to seeing our adults and young peoplestand and affirm their faith in Jesus Christ with their own mouths andfrom their own hearts. Confirmation is also a wonderful opportunity forus as a church community to stand alongside our adults and young peopleto support them in their faith journey. Attending a Confirmation Servicecan also be a great reminder and a renewal of our own professions of faithmade at our own Confirmations. Please do plan to come along to theservice in the New Year!

With materials smuggled into the family homein the case of a grandfather clock – the hidingplace was built! As an expression of Christianlove Casper Ten Boom began using the hidingplace to shelter Jews in their AmsterdamHouse. They were discovered and the familyarrested. The two girls Betsie and Corrie TenBoom found themselves in Ravensbruck Con-centration Camp. As they watched a guardbeating a prisoner (sadly a routine experi-ence), Corrie cried out, “Oh that poor woman.”Referring to the prisoner – her sister cried outbeside her, “Yes, may God forgive,” referring

to the guard. Already a Christian thisvery short prayer would shape the restof Corrie Ten Boom’s life. Betsie diedin the Concentration Camp but Corriesurvived to return home to begin herreconciliation work for which alongsideher faith and wartime adventures hasrightly brought her global acclaim.

It would seem fitting to use some shortquotations from Corrie Ten Boom inthis edition of the magazine whereRemembrance Day looms large.

“Prayer is the key for the day; the lock for the night.”

“The blacker the night around us grew, the brighter and truer and morebeautiful burns the word of God.”

Who is my neighbour, Lord?

During one session of our Wednesday nightBible study we were considering what itmight mean to ‘minister with love andgrace’. As part of this study we looked atLuke 10:24-37 – the Parable of the GoodSamartian. I’m sure we all know thisparable inside out but let me give a weerecap!

In this beautiful and challenging passage of the Bible, Jesus is asked by aman of the law – ‘Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ Jesusanswers by asking the man what it says in the Law. The lawyer answers,“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all yoursoul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbouras yourself.” The lawyer asks Jesus another question, “Who is myneighbour Lord?” Jesus answers the question with His Parable of TheGood Samaritan. A traveller is set upon by robbers who leave him naked,bruised, bloodied and half dead at the side of the road. Three men passby him – a priest, a Levite and a Samaritan. Only one stops to help. TheSamaritan is so moved with pity that he cares for the man’s wounds; heputs him on his donkey and brings him to the nearest inn where he paysthe innkeeper to continue caring for the injured man. So, when Jesusasks, ”Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the manwho fell into the hands of the robbers?” - the answer is the one who hadmercy.

There are a few things that always stike me here in Luke 10. One thingis the challenge laid down by Jesus. The lawyer knows the Lord’sinstruction in Deuteronomy 6:4-7 - ‘You shall love the Lord your God with

all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and withall your mind’. He also knows the instruction to, ‘love your neighbour asyourself’ from Leviticus 19:9-18. Yet, he seems to be missing something.He is challenged by Jesus, who says, “Do this, and you will live.” Thelawyer doesn’t seem to understand that loving God with all his heart,soul, strength and mind should also compel him to love others. Jesus istelling him – go, do; love as you have been loved; love as you love theFather; love others; love your neighbour. The lawyer still doesn’t seemto get it. He asks, “And who is my neighbour?” The story Jesus tells inreply shows that the man’s neighbour is the person close to him whoneeds to be shown love and grace.

This question, “Who is my neighbour?” – is still relevant to us today. Ourneighbour is not necessarily the person or the people who live next doorto us. Many of us might not even have a ‘next-door’ neighbour. Ourneighbour might be half a mile down the road! This is another thing thatstrikes me in the passage. Jesus is prompting us to consider our neigh-bour to be those who we happen upon. Our neighbour is the person wesee who needs help, who needs to hear a kind word, who needs to beprayed for. Our neighbour is the person we work with, the person whosits down beside us on the bus, the person who we happen to speak towhen we’re out shopping. Jesus prompts us to ask who is it He wants usto show love and grace to today.

I encourage you to ask the Lord foropportunities to show His love andgrace to someone this week. Itmight be popping in to say, “Hello,”to someone we know is feeling lone-ly or a little low. It might be offer-ing to help someone out withchildcare for an afternoon or buyinga cup of coffee for the person in our

workplace who is having a particularly bad day.

This passage inspires us to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soulstrength and mind, and to love our neighbour as ourselves. Let’s bepeople who live this out in a practical and loving way. Let’s be peoplewho seek to show love and grace to those around us today and every day.

CHURCH LADS’ AND CHURCH GIRLS’ BRIGADE

Everyone enjoyed the Bright Light Fancy DressHallowe’en Party. Plenty of fun and games. Agreat resource from the Scripture Union.

The CLCGB will be on parade at this year’sRemembrance Day on 10th November and willlay a wreath at the Cenotaph.

The Enrolment Service for all boys and girls will take place in St Patrick’sChurch on Friday, 15th November at 7.00 pm.

The volunteers enjoyed the coffee morning lastmonth at which Anna presented a statement ofour accounts. Dorothy thanked the welcoming,catering and set up volunteers for theircontinued support and emphasised howimportant they are to the Mothers and Toddlersteam.

We had a great party for Hallowe’en and the children enjoyed dippingapples into white chocolate. Dorothy carved a pumpkin and read thePumpkin Carving Prayer which reminded everyone that God’s light shineson everything we do.

In November we will be thinking about Remembrance Day with some craftactivities.

Experiment badge! We made lava lamps, Oobleck and cola rockets! Theyfinished up with a trip to Rosepark Farm near Ballymoney with theNorthern Ireland Beavers.

Cubs also had a busy time. They welcomedeight new Cubs into the Pack and a newAssistant Leader Nic Dallatt. There was funmaking kites, earning their emergency aidbadges, taking part in the District UnihocCompetition and the County Colour Run inGlenavy.

Scouts have had a very energetic month.Besides working on story stones and lookingat diet and fitness they took part in the District Football competition atMuckamore, Mud Run at Parkanaur and Colour Run at Glenavy!

Our four Eurojam participants took part in another training weekend andenjoyed getting to know the members of their unit better. We are stillfundraising for their trip and the annual fundraising Chinese banquet ishappening on Wednesday 13th November in the Go Sun Chinese Restau-rant.

We were delighted to be invited to theofficial opening of the Cladagh GlenScout Centre where we held our sum-mer camp. It was great to see the brickwhich we sponsored in place and tocatch up with the team in Fermanagh.

We had a wonderful turn out of animals at Messy Church. It was great tosee such a variety. We joined together to celebrate and asked God’sblessing on each animal. Every animal received a pet blessing card androsette for attending Messy Church. We sang songs, watched video clips,listened to poems and prayers and remembered our animals who haddied. We enjoyed playing with animal cuddly toys, puzzles, colouring,play dough, sensory play, crafts and games - we also enjoyed foodtogether. Thanks to Tori and her dog Vivvy from Guide Dogs for the Blindfor coming to talk to us and to everyone who joined with us and helpedin anyway to make it a great success.

‘Zumba’

We had a great night at Zumba Glow. Thanks to all who supported theevening for the youth. Thanks to Lesley for keeping us moving andgetting our glow on and to Andrea for the refreshments.

Connor’s Big Family Fiesta

An afternoon not to be missed. Come and join us for Bible storytelling byBob Hartman, drama from Play it by Ear and live music by the children’spraise band Inspire. The theme of the afternoon is about celebratingbeing part of God’s kingdom, its for all primary school aged children and

Snapshot Sunday

An afternoon of workshops for leaders to learn from the experts. Theworkshops will include sharing ideas, resources on how to communicatefaith, how to teach the Bible to children and young people in an engagingand relevant way through storytelling, music, drama and sharing faithstories. Cost £5 each, refreshments included. Following the workshopsthere will be a praise service which will include the commissioning of allleaders who attended the training.  Please book your attendance withLucy.

Two great events happening in our own church - please try and attend asthey will be very worthwhile.

On Saturday 12th October we had a ‘HelloYellow’ night at Youth Club to supportyoung minds as the 10th of October wasworld mental health day. We made yellowgiraffes, talked about different feelingswith the juniors and the seniors, watcheda video clip and talked about how toalways ask someone if they are ok, to tellthem they are never alone and there’salways someone to talk to.

The Youth Club and Sunday School collected food for Ballyloughan FoodBank to celebrate the harvest. Thanks to all who contributed.

Sunday School children have been busy learning through the new interac-tive resource ‘All Aboard’. We will also be looking at the Catechism,especially the Lord’s Prayer and the Apostles’ Creed. Fusion are enjoyinglearning from their new resource ‘I Believe’ which covers a lot of Churchof Ireland content and is helpful for those going forward for Confirmation.

On Sunday 24th November we will be having a Youth Service in the MinorHall from 7 - 8.30 pm. We will be following the resource ‘The Journey’and our guest speaker will be Christina Baillie. We hope that all second-ary school age young people will join us. The evening will finish with foodand fellowship.

Sixteen ladies from the Parish attendedthe ‘Free to Be’ event at WellingtonChurch on Tuesday 8th October. Welooked at what freedom means andhow to maintain the momentum as lifekeeps adding more challenges. Wewere reminded of the verse, ‘It is forfreedom that Christ has set us free’. Itwas a very informative evening withCathy Madavan, Rebekah Legg and theCare for the Family Team.

The OCN level in youth work practise is well under way with 11 youngpeople taking part. Rick from Youth Link is taking the course and so farthe young people have covered Leadership in Youth Work,Identity/Qualities in Leadership and an Effective Leader.

Wilhelmina (Billie) Thomas Adams Nicholl

Billie was born on 1st January 1935 and was the eldest child of Jack andJoy Millar and the sister of Noel. Billie and Noel had a very happychildhood and enjoyed family life together. Billy attended BallymenaPrimary School and Ballymena Academy. After leaving school she workedas a Clerical Officer in the Braidwater Spinning Mill. She married Bertieand they had one son John to whom she was a devoted mother. Billiehelped out in the family shop in Salisbury Square and later took over therunning of the business. She was a very private person but she was also

very positive and caring. Billieloved to be involved behind thescenes in the bowling world ofher family. She gave strongsupport to her husband and toher son John who were bothvery keen bowlers. Billie lovedto travel and went on many bustours to Europe. She was espe-cially fond of the Amalfi Coastin Italy. She had a strong Chris-tian faith and was most support-ive of her Church family.Unfortunately her health de-clined during the last few years of her life. We would like to convey toher son John, her brother Noel and sister-in-Law Margaret, her nephewEric and niece Elaine and to all of her family circle our sincere sympathyat this sad time.
