Twenty-Fourth Sunday of the Year Year C 15th September 2019 Diane Corkery Commentary

First Reading (Ex 32: 7-11) The opening verses refer to the preceding section of the Book of Exodus (32:1-7), which recounts the people’s tenacity in removing both Moses and the Lord as their leader by constructing the golden calf. It is interesting that when addressing Moses, the Lord refers to the people as ‘your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt’ (v.7) while when Moses implores the Lord, he refers to them as ‘your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt’ (v.11). The work of the Lord and the work of his servant Moses are indistinguishable. In the absence of Moses, the people need a visible expression of divine guidance. The construction of the calf, however, is not the answer to the seeming absence of stable and visible leadership through Moses and, concomitantly, the Lord. Even if the calf is intended as an image of the Lord (it is acknowledged as having brought them out of the land of Egypt), its construction is a great apostasy given that the Lord cannot be confined to a physical entity, as the First Commandment makes clear ((Ex 20:2-4). The people have turned aside from what the Lord has commanded (v.8) and this is why the Lord refers to them as having acted perversely (v. 7) and as being stiff-necked (v.9). The role of Moses as intercessor is forcefully portrayed at the end of our reading, so much so that, further on in the Book of Exodus, the Lord has a change of heart concerning the punishment of the people. Why the change of mind? Moses calls upon the Lord to reflect upon his character and past promises (Ex 32:13). The Lord, by virtue of faithfulness to covenant, is able to bear with his people who have sinned and will continue to sin. Does this Old Testament image of God still offer hope?

Gospel (Lk.15: 1-32) One of the purposes of parables is to move a hearer to conversion. Speaking in parables is a very effective means of bringing about a change of mind and heart in the hearer, given that parables have the capacity to shatter constricted ways of viewing life and the world. Parables break down former expectations and illusions by provoking a shock and providing an unfamiliar conception of the way things are. The hearers of Jesus’ parables in today’s Gospel, the Pharisees and the scribes, are a prime example of people who need to dispel former prejudices (Lk 15:2). The first parable is indeed shocking: no shepherd in first-century Palestine would ever consider leaving 99 sheep in the wilderness to go after the lost one. According to John’s Gospel, the shepherd never leaves his sheep exposed to the possibility of danger (Jn 10:11-13). The reader is left with a significant image of God who seeks out and saves the lost, defying all accepted social conventions and expectations. God’s mercy is not confined to the Pharisees and scribes or any human person’s conception of how he should act. The parable of the lost coin reinforces the joy of finding that which was lost. The parable of the forgiving father provides a more vivid image of a merciful father/God. The father sees the lost son from afar – almost as if he has been waiting expectantly – and takes the initiative in reconciling the relationship that the younger son had himself severed (v.20). The father does not give his son the chance to complete the words of repentance that he has rehearsed (compare vv. 18-19, 21). The father’s excitement, enthusiasm and energy rapidly transform the situation into a great feast, of which the elder son has not been informed. The elder son has a point (see Lk 15:29-30). How many of us would raise the same objections if this story was our story? Does this parable expose prejudices in us? The shock of this parable might well be the absurd mercy of the Father and, indeed, the problem that this parable raises for us might be undeserved mercy and forgiveness for others.
