SCRIPTURE INSIGHTS WEEKDAY READINGS
Today’s readings remind us of the power and necessity of prayer—not just any prayer, but the prayer of a listening heart that is preparing for mission. In the First Reading, we are told that the Apostles, some disciples, and Jesus’ family are gathered in a home in Jerusalem. There they “devoted themselves” to prayer. The Risen Jesus had been appearing to them for forty days, symbolizing a period of transition, and teaching about the Reign of God. On the fortieth day they had witnessed the Ascension—an astonishing experience. Just before he was taken up, he had said, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be my witnesses…….to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Given all they had seen and heard that day, those gathered in the upper room must have felt weary, exhilarated, and perhaps a bit befuddled. Luke does not tell us what they were praying. Perhaps they were wondering whether they would ever see Jesus again. Most likely they were praying about how to respond when they were called to the mission Jesus had given them. In the Gospel reading, Jesus is praying aloud to God in the presence of his disciples, but he seems to be speaking in riddles. What does it all mean? In John’ Gospel, when Jesus talks about his glorification, he is actually referring to his Death and return to the Father. In the second half of his reading, Jesus begins to pray for his disciples—remember that they have been listening—and he recalls that he fulfilled his mission of revealing the Father to them and they accepted his words. The disciples do not know it yet, but they will be called to a similar mission for others. What do today’s readings tell you about the cost of being a
disciple of Jesus? As you reflect on your own mission, write your “prayer of a
listening heart.” Imagine you were among the disciples listening to Jesus’
prayer to the Father. What would you like him to ask for on your behalf?
