First Sunday of Advent A good message for this First Sunday of Advent, since the word “advent” means “coming.” During the weeks between now and Christmas the church wants us to focus a en on on the truth that the Lord is coming. No truth is more crucial. What does the church mean when it says the Lord is coming? Many things. We consider a few.

He will come; on the last day—both the last day of the universe and the last day of our individual lives. On the last day of the universe, a er he has judged the whole of human history, me as we know it will cease and eternity begin. On the last day of our individual lives he will pass judgment on how each of us has spent our days on earth and then assign us to our place in eternity. It is about these comings of the Lord as judge us that Jesus speaks in this Sunday Gospel where a man goes on a journey, leaving his household in the care of his servants. Freed of his oversight and uncertain about the exact date of his return, these may be tempted to grow careless and neglect their du es. But for them to yield, Jesus warns, would be foolish. The very absence of certainty about their master’s return should make them all the more careful, lest when he does come he should find them asleep. The same, Jesus says, holds for us. No one knows when the clock of the world’s me will stop cking or on what day and hour the private clock of our own me on earth will break down. Therefore we must always be alert, and prepare for the coming of the Lord. (Traducción en la página 7)

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in ba le. Be our protec on against the wickedness and snares of the devil; May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

MARK’S JESUS Mark’s Gospel is the shortest and tersest of all four. The discourses of Jesus tend to be terser as well. Mark’s portrayal of Jesus has none of the poetry of the Sermon on the Mount or the Sermon on the Plain as in Ma hew or Luke, nor the extensive, reflec ve “I Am” discourses as in John. Mark’s Jesus “cuts to the chase,” we would say today. This is reflected quite well in today’s passage. It is no accident that the dialogue of Jesus at this point in the Gospel according to Mark—the concluding words about the end of the world—immediately before his passion, is riddled with exclama on points and an overall sense of urgency. We would do well to re-tool our own way of living this Advent, for we live in a world urgently in need of hearing the message of Jesus proclaimed. It’s me for us to “wake up!” and get out into the world to do it.
