Sixth Sunday in Ordinary TimeFebruary 16, 2020

T P’ C

My brothers and sisters, all I can say is Wow! These past several weeks of talking with you about our

baptismal call to ministry has been rewarding and lifegiving, but I have to admit to being completely

blown away by the overwhelming response we received last week at our Commitment Sunday!

Hundreds of you, parishioners of every age and background, came forward in the sight of God and your

brothers and sisters and committed yourselves to participating in the ministry of Jesus Christ in our

parish. It was incredible to witness and it will be even more incredible to see it all come to fruition!

Here in the parish office, Seth Dwyer and Robin Perkins are working hard at organizing all the

information we have received and soon we’ll be ready to reach out and help everyone begin (or continue!) their ministry.

Thanks be to God for His goodness and thanks to all of you for your incredible witness of faithfulness!

In other news, you’ll notice this week that work has finally begun on the buttresses at Holy Family in Old Town. Over the

last several years, these buttresses have been deteriorating rapidly, and in order to ensure the physical integrity of the

church building this work could not be put off any longer. You will recall that this project is part of our capital campaign

plan, but since we have yet to raise 60% of our goal, we are not able to use campaign funds to pay for it. Back in November

our finance council voted unanimously to use a portion of our savings to finance this work and to reimburse ourselves when

the campaign funds have been raised, and so that is what we are going to do! We have contracted with Knowles Industrial

Services an excellent firm with an excellent reputation and I am pleased to say that they arrived this past Tuesday and

have begun their work in earnest. This is very exciting and is all part of helping us build for our future. Thank you for your

stewardship and your financial support!

Lent will be here before you know it, with Ash Wednesday on February 26

th

this year. Do you have a Lenten plan yet?

Let’s all be sure to pray about what God may be inviting us to do this Lent. In the meantime, be well and be holy! See you

in church!

Just a reminder Flu Precautions are in place until further

notice, this includes:

1.) When individuals are ill, they are not bound by the

Sunday Mass obligation.

2.) The distribution of the Precious Blood to the faithful

will be discontinued at all Masses.

3.) The reverent reception of the Sacred Host in one’s hand

may be the most sanitary option at this time. However, the

option to receive on the tongue is still the right of all the

faithful and no one may be denied Holy Communion if

they choose to continue exercising this right.

4.) All those who distribute Holy Communion should take

great care not to touch the tongue or hand of any

communicant, and should be prepared to sanitize their

hands before and after the distribution of Holy

Communion.

5.) There will be no physicaltouching allowed at Mass

(e.g., shaking hands during the Sign of Peace, holding

hands during the Our Father, etc.)

If you are ill or the weather is bad/dangerous you are

excused from your Sunday Mass Obligation. Please use

your best judgement when it comes to illness and

dangerous driving conditions. We want everyone to stay

safe and healthy.

Oh the weather outside is frightful!

As we continue our winter heating and

plowing season, please keep in mind that

parish expenses increase when there is a

storm. When storms prevent some

parishioners from attending Mass, our

offertory goes down considerably. Please consider your

weekly financial support to the parish and think about

signing up for our online giving program. For more

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary TimeFebruary 16, 2020

Sirach 15:1520

The Jewish sage Sirach speaks of the wisdom in choosing

to be obedient and loyal to God’s will and

commandments. Why do you think this is such a difficult

choice for humans?

1 Corinthians 2:610

Paul encouraged the believers in Corinth to rely on God’s

wisdom rather than on the wisdom of the rules of this age.

What human “wisdom” of our age should we be avoiding?

Matthew 5:1737

As Jesus continues with his Sermon on the Mount, he

addresses a variety of topics with his disciples the Law,

anger, adultery, divorce, and oaths all of which were

part of daily life. How can you challenge yourself and

others to live to these divine standards?

Questions of the Week for Scripture Reflection

People are not property. We cannot exchange them

at will or simply use them for our own designs and

purposes. What does the word “commitment” mean to

you? We can begin to understand its meaning by looking at

some synonyms: dedication, devotion, allegiance, loyalty,

faithfulness, fidelity, and bond. Commitment is primarily

about relationship, and Jesus is all about relationships.

How our lives affect others, how we treat our brothers and

sisters, how we resolve conflict, and how we view the

vows of marriage. Jesus’ teachings on obeying the

commandments, murder, reconciliation, marriage, divorce,

and adultery all stem from the sacredness of commitment.

All of this has a God connection.

We can easily see one another as interchangeable

and dispensable. We treat so much of our lives this way.

What works today may not be what I want tomorrow. We

search and search for the right thing only to find our hearts

still restless in the end. Is real

happiness achievable this side of the

grave? Sometimes we expect too

much out of others and want our

relationships to fill a hole that we

must figure out how to fill ourselves.

Any seasoned married couple will tell you that their love

for one another changes as time passes. Even though the

understanding of romance changes as life changes, the

dedication, devotion, allegiance, loyalty, faithfulness, and

fidelity all remain and even deepen.

Some relationships can be hurtful, and God does

not want us to live with abuse or pain. Also, how a

relationship develops is sometimes out of our control, and

we become the victim of someone else’s decision. But we

can’t be selffocused in our relationships and see them

exclusively as selffulfilling ends. We are companions on

life’s journey with varying depths of relationships being

enjoyed by all who are with us along the way. We have the

freedom to choose. God asks us to do so wisely, with right

judgment and thinking.

Gospel Meditation

St. Peter Damian

Bishop & Doctor of the

Church

Feast Day: February 21st

One of the greatest and most necessary gifts God gives us

is free will. We always have the ability to choose. Life or

death and good or evil are two of the core decisions every

human being must make. We can choose to love and

choose whether to pursue a relationship with God. True

salvation comes when we make the choices

that keep us focused on God and God’s

commandments. How we view others reveals

what choices we have made. People are not

property, and they are not dispensable. We cannot

exchange them at will or use them for our own selfserving

ends. For this reason, God holds high the commitment of

marriage and the integrity of all of our relationships. This

is the basis of God’s teaching on forgiveness and

reconciliation, and the reason adultery is prohibited.

Inspiration for the Week

Vestments are clothes worn for a specific purpose.

Priests will joke that they cover a thousand flaws. But our

own manner of dress often corresponds to what we do. We

dress up for special occasions, and for special guests. We

wear certain clothes for golf, for outdoor activities, and

years ago, we even had our "Sunday best" clothes we wore

just for Church. Vestments are much the same, and each

one has a meaning. The alb is a reminder of the

baptismal garment. The stole is a symbol of

ordained ministry and authority within the

Church. The chasuble reminds us that we are on

a pilgrimage of faith, passing through this life

towards heaven.

Priests wear vestments for two basic

reasons. First, they draw attention to the

importance and solemnity of the act of worship.

The color of the vestments indicates the season

of the year or the feast being celebrated. Secondly,

vestments draw attention to what the priest does, rather

than who he is. In the celebration of the Mass, the focus is

on what we do together, on our common unity, and on the

mystery and person of Christ.

Why do priests wear vestments?
