THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

November 3, 2013 FROM THE PASTOR The energy expended last weekend at all the Masses was truly memorable. Just think of how fortunate we are as a parish family to have such a treasury of talent, devotion, and loyalty assembled in one small parish in the sprawling Diocese of Orange.

I wish to publicly thank Bob and Barbara Dietterle for talking at all the Masses on the

“Commitment” process for the Christ Forever Campaign, the Knights of Columbus for hosting the pancake breakfast and I.D. Drive, the officers of the former Italian Catholic Federation (ICF) for their generous donation to the parish school and the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and our music director, Todd Helm, organist, Claudia Kellogg, wonderful cantors, and cele-brated parish choir for the exciting musical rendering of con-temporary vocal selections. Laughter, toe-tapping, and hand-clapping along side with joyous conversations filled the church, Parish Center, and walk-ways last Sunday.

Congratulations to longtime parishioner and former president of the Pastoral Council, Peter (“Pete”) Lauder on his admission to Candidacy for the Diaconate for the Diocese of Orange. Pete, along with 15 others was admitted to the formal process of study, prayer and formation leading to ordination as a perma-nent deacon. While the years ahead will be busy for him and his devoted wife Jan, he is assured of our prayers and love. Perhaps we will invite Pete to talk at all the Masses sharing his progress with us and to encourage others who may want to serve the par-ish and Diocese in this capacity. Deacons Gerhard and Bill have served well. Deacon Chuck Doidge is establishing his ministry since his appointment to serve at St. Juliana in 2012.

In article 1570 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church pre-pared following the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council and promulgated on October 11, 1992 by Pope John Paul II we read the following description: “Deacons share in Christ’s mission and grace in a special way. The sacrament of Holy Order marks them with an imprint (‘character’) which cannot be removed and which configures them to Christ, who made himself the ‘deacon’ or servant of all. Among other tasks, it is the task of deacons to assist the bishop and priests in the celebration of the divine mysteries, above all the Eucharist, in the distribution of Holy Communion, in assisting at and blessing marriages, in the proclamation of the Gospel and preaching, in presiding over funerals, and in dedicating themselves to the various ministries of charity.”

A few weeks ago, Bill Jason, a parishioner, school parent, and sometimes lunch confederate sent me an e-mail entitled, Pope Francis’ Five Finger Prayer in response to a homily I preached on Persevering in Prayer. The visual is an open hand facing the viewer with thumb and digits spread apart. The copy reads: 1) The thumb is the closest finger to you. So start praying for those who are closest to you. They are the persons easiest to remem-ber. To pray for our dear ones is a “SWEET OBLIGATION.” 2) The next finger is the index. Pray for those who teach you, in-struct you and heal you. They need the support and wisdom to show direction to others. Always keep them in your prayers. 3)

The following finger is the tallest. It reminds us of our leaders, the governors and those who have authority. They need God’s guidance. 4) The fourth finger is the ring finger. Even that it may surprise you, it is our weakest finger. It should remind us to pray for the weakest, the sick or those plagued by problems. They need your prayers. 5) And finally we have our smallest finger, the smallest of all. Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. When you are done praying of the other four groups, you will be able to see your own needs but in the proper perspec-tive, and also you will be able to pray for your own needs in a better way.”

The author, Angeline Hubert, wrote a short reflection in the pub-lication, Words of Grace, for the Mass readings on Monday, Oc-tober 28th, the feast day of Sts. Simon and Jude. Her reflection is based on the words of St. Paul in the second chapter of his letter to the Ephesians where he writes: “…in him (Christ) you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spir-it.” She writes: “In today’s passage from Ephesians, Paul gives us a wonderful description of what it means to be church. Using images drawn from physical buildings, he creates a rich portrait of a living, growing church rooted in tradition, founded on those who have gone before us in faith, centered on Christ, and em-powered by the Spirit. We often speak of ‘going to church,’ but Paul reminds us that church isn’t just a building. It’s a sacred community where God dwells with us. Each member of the com-munity is important, a citizen who brings his or her gifts to the building up of the church. Each of us is a living stone with a unique contribution to be shared with the whole ‘household of God.”

If you didn’t have a chance to purchase the delicious array of salted and sweet packaged nuts from members of the Young La-dies Institute (YLI) this Sunday, I am sure Debbie Shimaoka or Michele Tanaka will be able to supply you with whatever you need. Debbie’s number published in the bulletin is (714) 441-0446. Thank you for your support.

Recently, I received a communication from Andrea West, the director of Faith Formation for the Special Needs community which meets here at St. Juliana. The correspondence was at my request to Andrea to share with St. Juliana this sacramental prep-aration program which takes place during the 9am and 11am Masses in the Parish Center meeting rooms. This is Andrea’s eleventh year and her second year with us. There are 20 students with special needs that come from as far away as Mission Viejo. Andrea is assisted by our student aides: Reynold Hamar, Natalie Vaccher and Jessica James. This program is in addition to our Deaf Community ministry which Nancy Lopez has directed for 7 years. For more information check www.specialneedsdioceseof orange.org.

Bob Greene in one of his long-ago columns wrote, “Care deeply for yourself, and have the wherewithal to do what it takes to make yourself happy. Go out and claim the life you deserve!”

I would like to thank Fr. Frank and all of the parishioners for the compliments paid to the choir, cantors and instrumentalists after last Sunday's Mass. I would like to echo Fr. Frank's words by expressing my thanks for the amazing talent in our parish, and encouraging all of you to continue singing, as your participation raises the music to a new level. A big thank you to "Gospel-pianist-extraordinaire" Tim Parks, electric bassist Nathan Atwater, and soloist Monette Velasco. But my biggest words of appreciation need to go to our wonderful choir. The St. Juliana Adult Choir is comprised of 46 singers who dedicate hours of volunteer time to our music ministry. In preparation for Sunday Mass, the choir rehearses every Thurs-day evening. As a high school choir director, I have the luxury of rehearsing each of my choirs every day for an hour, in prep-aration for concerts that are presented every 8-10 weeks. Not so for a church choir. In one weekly 90-minute rehearsal, we must prepare hymns, Mass parts, and choral anthems for "performance" each Sunday. We also must constantly be working ahead on future celebrations (it is always "Christmas in October - Easter in January" for church choirs!) as well as practicing for special Masses and concerts. Even though we work very hard each week, our rehearsals are also times of fellowship and prayer, and lots of laughter. The dedicated members of the St. Juliana Choir are:

Joanne Adger, Russ Bianchi, Gail Besaw, Jim Besaw, Carol Blair, JoAnn Campanella, Michelle Doan, Richard Esqueda, Emily Evans, Antoniette Fancuberta, Ernesto Fancuberta, Glenn French, Joyce French, Nancy Harry, Carmel Helm, Ste-ve Hoffman, Catherine Kim, John Kim, Stan Kohlenberger, Irene Kohlenberger, Carl Martorana, Jan Martorana, Carolyn McMorrow, Carri Morones, Kimber Parks, Tim Parks, Rich-ard Pollard, Bob Powers, Teresa Raridan, Bernie Reyes, Kathy Reyes, Paul Riffel, Evi Samsudin, Roseanne Santoro, Bill Schirmer, Mary Schmittou, Katherine Scott, Kieran Scott, Su-san Simpson, Tom Stachelek, Monette Velasco, John Van Wonterghem, Pam Walker, Bob Wrona. The choir will be singing Monday evening at our annual All Souls Mass. We will be singing favorite standard hymns, as well as the beautiful anthems "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need" and "Without Seeing You". Joining us will be guest instrumentalists Jonathan Marzluf on oboe, and Elizabeth Low-Atwater on bassoon. Kimber Bentley Parks will be cantor and Teresa Raridan will be soloist. I hope to see many of you Mon-day evening at 7:00pm as we remember the souls of our dearly departed friends and family members.

NEEDED: EXTRAORDINARY EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS

Our parish is of urgent need of additional Extraordinary Eu-charistic Ministers at all the masses, especially for the 5:00pm 7:30am and 11:00am Masses. This spiritual ministry witnesses the Real Presence of Christ in the action of sharing in the Eucharist meal of Christ’s sacrifice by assisting the priest in bringing the sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ to the people of God at mass. We urge you please to consider joining this ministry of service. Training will be provided. If you are interested, please call the Church Of-fice at 714-879-1965 or Deacon Gerhard Stadel at 714-870-5714.

CATHOLIC GIFTS Are you in need of catholic gifts? ClearlyCatholic.com at the website at http://www.clearlycatholic.com recently notified St. Juliana that any purchase made through their company means 15% of the profit donated back to us! Just list St. Juliana Church during the on-line checkout.

The McClennen family of St. Juliana gave the money to spon-sor a drywall project for the Espinoza-Medina family in Valle de Las Palmas, Mexico. The village is located about 30 minutes south of Tecate. The family of six had been living in a Corazon built house without insulation or drywall. When we arrived at the site, the rooms were empty and ready for the pro-ject. We found out that the family had been waiting five years for their drywall installation. They were excited to start the project. We worked together all day and the family prepared us a traditional Mexican meal for lunch. The family is very grateful to be sponsored. Their house with drywall will be much easier to keep warm and clean.

If you would like to help sponsor a project for Corazon call Doug or Jean Knudson at 714-992-2905.
