Pentecost!
What joy there must have been among the followers of Jesus as the Holy Spirit poured out upon them! And we can experience that same joy---and hope---as we celebrate this weekend. Nope. Things are not the same. But we had 250 folks who participated in our Masses this past weekend. And the views of our 10 am Mass video exceeded 700 within 24 hours. Nope. It was “not the same.” But do masks, social distancing, and other reasonable precautions prevent us from celebrating with one an-other? No. We were not able to sing as we are accustomed. But, yes, we were able to respond at critical points in the celebration without “smells and bells” to remind us to do so. We are thankful for the gifts of our can-tors, lectors, instrumentalists, and those who con-tributed to the prayerfulness of our Masses. As the People of God, constituted in a community known as the church (big or small “c” on the word church), we took a significant step forward in the
“Big Crazy.” Not because institutional officialdom is-sued decrees or guidance, on matters big and fre-quently small. But because we hungered. Hungered for the commu-nity and hungered for the Eucharist. Hungered for a sense that when the BC is over---whatever that means---that we will still be together. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. With the powerful influence of all three distinct persons of the Trinity. And with a renewed sense that Pentecost was not just an event: but a process of renewal. And renewal is something which all of us need! Watch out: the Holy Spirit is coming! Sharing the GospelJesus gave his friends the Holy Spirit, who would always live in their hearts. If any of them were ever sad or afraid, they Holy Spirit comforted them. If someone had sinned, they could bring healing and forgive-ness. With the help of the Holy Spirit, they shared God’s love with the world.
