No matter what you’ve learned in the past about Catholicism, you’ll always have questions about life in the Church. Want to get answers and have fun doing it?
ASK gathers at St. John Neumann in Sunbury in a fun, casual environment. Submit your anonymous questions about Catholic faith and practice, and Fr. Dave Sizemore and Paul Stokell, SJN’s Adult
Faith Formation Director, will answer your questions in two minutes (or less!). You’ll be surprised at what other “inquiring minds want to know.” Participants are from a variety of backgrounds, including Catholics Returning Home, long-time parishioners, spouses of parishioners – anyone who is interested in learning more about the Catholic faith. ASK sessions are open to everyone, and participants are welcome to bring guests.
ASK will meet again in the SJN Faith and Family Center on Thursday, January 26, at 7:00 p.m. Be sure to bring your questions. Contact Paul Stokell at [email protected] for more information.

This Week in Alpha: Session 2: Why Did Jesus Die?
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not
perish, but have eternal life. – John 3:16
“After I had studied the Bible for about three months I could have passed an elementary exam on the cross. I understood there is one God who could be known in three Persons. I understood Jesus is fully God and fully man and He died on the cross for the sins of the world. But I didn’t understand that I was a sinner. I knew I messed up here and there but I didn’t realize how serious my condition was.
But one evening around this time my wife Carol said, ‘I think it’s time to do something about all that we’ve been learning.’ Then, as I looked on in utter amazement, she knelt down on the floor and started praying.
In a flash the cross made personal sense to me. Suddenly, I knew something I had never known before; I had hurt God’s feelings. He loved me and in His love for me He sent Jesus. But I had turned away from that love; I had shunned it all of my life. I was a sinner, desperately in need of the cross.”
~ John Wimber, Equipping the Saints, Vol 2 No 2, Spring 1988
We all know that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, but why Him? Why did God send His “only begotten Son” (His only Son who shares His divinity)? Jesus suffered and died because any sin is an offense against a God who is eternal; and reparation has to be made by someone who is eternal. When Jesus became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, He became not only fully God but also fully man, allowing humanity the dignity of cooperating in healing the breach and allowing us to participate in the love of the divine.
But what does that mean for us? It means that ALL sin, whether venial or mortal, is an offense to God. Christ suffered and died for even our smallest sins. We are all “desperately in need of the cross.” By the mercy of God, we can confess and repent from our sins.

In God We Trust: Religious Liberty – Your First Amendment RightDuring these challenging times, there is a critical need to focus on defending our religious liberty as stated in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. In these highly informative presentations, Bishop David Malloy and Monsignor Eric Barr show us that protection of religious freedom is fundamental for Catholics, as well as people of all faiths.

We have a Vocation Discernment Group for teens and young men in our parish, facilitated by our very own Fr. Dave and group coordinator Bob Copeland. We meet monthly for a meal and discussion, learning the timely biblical and spiritual principles of how to learn to listen to the voice of God so our life’s vocation choice is known to us and we live a happy, holy, healthy and fulfilled life. We are currently reading and discussing the vocation book entitled To Save A Thousand Souls. We can provide you with a copy. All high school age young men are invited to attend our meeting on Wednesday, January 25, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., in the Neumann Room. Dinner will be served, and we will discuss Chapter 6 in the To Save A Thousand Souls book. RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONColumbian Squires – Beginning in January 2017, the Knights of Columbus will be forming a Columbian Squires program at St. John Neumann. The Columbian Squires is the
official youth organization of the Knights of Columbus and is a leadership development program for young Catholic men, ages 10-18 years old. The Knights will be available in the Cloister Walkway again this weekend to discuss the program or answer any questions. We will also be having a kickoff meeting on Monday, January 30, at 6:30 p.m., in the lower level of the Parish Office. The primary focus of the Squires will be to provide a service and charity-based organization for our young Catholic men. A Squires circle is run by and for them, under the guidance of several Knights, who serve as Counselors. Squires are to be leaders, thus, to the degree they are able, they are given the opportunity to lead by running their own meetings, investing their own members, setting their circle’s agenda and implementing their program of activities. If your son has an interest in joining the Charter Circle of the Squires, or for more information, contact Keith Rubadue at [email protected] or Phil Gullatta at [email protected], or visit us in the Cloister Walkway this weekend!

One thing I ask of the Lord; this I seek: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, that I may gaze on the loveliness of the Lord. ~ Psalm 27
Join fellow Adorers this week in the calm and peace of our Chapel. Our Eucharistic Lord is waiting for
you to share the desires and needs of your heart with Him and to simply sit in His presence. All are invited.
After all Masses next weekend, you will be invited to join our Adoration Family of scheduled Adorers. Sign-ups and more information will be available at the sign-up Table near the Chapel.
Vulnerable/Open Hours Needing New Scheduled Adorers: Friday, 2:00-3:00 a.m.; Saturday, 3:00-4:00 a.m.; Saturday, 3:00-4:00 p.m. (this hour is perfect for someone who usually attends 4:00 p.m. Mass); and Saturday, 8:00-9:00 p.m.
Adoration Hours: All hours are open except for weekend Mass hours. However, if you are not a scheduled Adorer and wish to visit during lockdown hours, please contact the Coordinator. Regular lockdown hours are Sunday through Thursday, 4:00 p.m.-9:00 a.m.; Friday, 12:00 noon to 12:00 midnight. Saturday varies. All are welcome.

St. John Neumann will host homeless families at the Family Promise Home in Delaware City, January 29th to February 5th. This can be a wonderful volunteer experience for the entire family since we serve only homeless families with children. Also, several friends or members of faith sharing groups could serve together.
There are a number of volunteer opportunities: – Prepare and serve a meal. – Prepare a meal to be served by another volunteer. – Be a day host on the weekend. – Be an overnight host. – Donate needed supplies. – Monetary contributions are always welcome.
Please prayerfully consider this opportunity to serve and keep the families and their challenges in your prayers.

What is an endowment? An endowment is a fund that is restricted. Only the interest from the fund can bespent, not the principal that anchors the endowment. Usually, only a portion of the interest or earnings fromthe endowment (typically 5%) are spent on an annual basis in order to assure that the original funds will growover time. The Catholic Foundation and its professionals oversee these endowment funds, investing themoney conservatively in stocks, bonds, and other instruments in line with our Catholic values. Our goal is toreach a threshold of $1,000,000 in the funds in the next few years so that the interest distribution would beabout $50,000 a year, which we will re-invest in the funds until future generations need them, particularly ifour area should fall into decline. Ultimately, our goal is to create an endowment culture, so we will be able tocontinue the Catholic Christian mission for generations to come.
