A Message from Our Pastor Fr. Gregory Spencer

For this Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, we continue where we left off in last week’s Gospel. If you recall, Simon Peter was called the “rock” upon which Jesus would build his Church, and yet Peter continues to show the limitations of his understanding of Jesus’ identity. Now that the disciples have acknowledged that Jesus is the Messiah, Jesus confides in them by letting them know that he must suffer and die in Jerusalem to be raised on the third day. Peter rejects this prediction, and Jesus rebukes him by calling him “Satan.” In opposing this aspect of Jesus’ mission, Peter shows that he is no longer speaking based on the revelation from God but as a human being. Jesus then teaches all of the disciples about the difficult path of discipleship: to be Christ’s disciple is to follow in his way of the cross.

Peter could not yet understand all of what it means to call Jesus the Messiah. It is unlikely that the other disciples understood any better. Under Roman occupation, many in Israel hoped and prayed that God would send a Messiah to free the Jews from Roman oppression. The common view was that the Messiah would be a king with an army that would free Israel from Roman rule. This is perhaps what Peter envisioned when he was led to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. In this passage, however, Jesus is beginning to teach his disciples that he would be the Messiah in a very different way.

Jesus would be more like the suffering servant described by the prophet Isaiah than the political liberator. Those who would be Jesus' disciples would be called to a similar life of service. Perhaps Peter finally was able to grasp that being called the “rock” by Jesus that he would also be called upon to offer himself in sacrifice and service to others. If you want to be a disciple of Jesus, one must take up the cross.

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Greg

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 16:21-27 Come Follow Me Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Living the Word: To take up our cross is very hard for many people. Have a discussion with your children about what that might mean to them. What cross do they have right now? Do they turn to Jesus in prayer asking for strength to help them with their cross? Put a cross or crucifix on your prayer table (if you don’t have one there yet). Perhaps get a cross for each family member to wear to remind them how God is there with them; He is our Hope and our Salvation! Questions of the Week: Child: When has it been hard to be a follower of Jesus? Adult: What has it meant to you to take up your cross and follow Jesus?

Fun Facts for Catholic Kids: Have you ever thought about that only God can make a tree? But did you know that you could DRAW a Family Tree? Talk to your parents about who your ancestors were. You know your parents, and probably your grandparents. But you might not know who your great grandparents were, and so forth. Draw a family tree and have your parents’ help you fill in as many spaces as you can. Put your name at the top, and then your brothers and sisters (if you have them); then Mom and Dad, grandparents, great grandparents, etc. And if you want to get really involved; include aunts and uncles too! Then look at your family tree and say a prayer, thanking God for your family and all families!

Respect Life News— A Tragic Decision On June 29, the U.S. Supreme Court on a 5-4 vote in "June Med. Services v. Russo" overturned a Louisiana law that required abortion clinics to meet the same standards as every other ambulatory surgical center in the state. Katrina Jackson, who authored the legislation and who is pro-life, noted that the Court in this tragic decision continued to put the interests of the for-profit abortion industry ahead of the health and safety of women. Her legislation was not an attack on the legality of abortion but an attempt to require abortion clinics to meet the same health standards as the rest of the medical profession. As Ms. Jackson asks-why should we settle for lower standards for women, especially when many women are coerced or abandoned to the trauma of abortion? Response to yet another capitul ation to the abortion industry was quick and direct by those who value all life. Among the respondents was Archbishop Joseph Naumann (KS). The archbishop's comments called attention to the fact that abortion "violently ends the life of a child , and often severely harms women. Abortion becomes even more destructive when basic health and safety standards are ignored, and profit margins are prioritized over women's health." He also stated "The Court's failure to recognize the legitimacy of laws prioritizing women's health and safety over abortion business interests continues a cruel precedent." He went on to say we will not rest until the Supreme Court corrects the grave injustice over the Roe decision and recognizes the Constitutional right to life for unborn human beings. He concluded "And we continue to ask all people of faith to pray for women seeking abortion, often under enormous pressure, that they will find alternatives that truly value them and the lives of their children." (Sources: Numerous). Please visit www.prolifealliance.com and sign the petition for the Life at Conception Act. This Act follows the Court's own instructions that leave it to Congress to define exactly when Human life--and constitutionally-protected "personhood"--actually begins. This legislation would declare unborn children to be persons as defined by the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, thus entitling them to legal protection. Thank you so much for your strong support for the precious unborn babies.

Carolina Catholic meets Father James Altman, one of the three priests leading the 40 day novena, Let Freedom Ring, online this summer.

For our second August show, we will meet one of the three priests hosting Let Freedom Ring, 40 Days to Freedom from the devil, a 40 day novena which began July 7th and ends August 15th when a new novena will commence. Rick Heilman, has led this novena by providing thoughtful reflections, prayers of reparation and exorcism, and litanies to the faithful in order to inspire us all to call out to God to bless and heal our land. The next novena, the 54 day Novena for Our Nation, begins August 15th and runs to October 7th.

This beautiful show will air on Wilmington Catholic Radio on stations 91.7 FM, 93.1 FM, and 103.1 FM in Wilmington and 100.5 FM in Southport the last two weekends of August, Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. That's Saturday, August 22nd and 29th, at 11 a.m. and Sunday, August 23rd and 30th, at 6 p.m. These shows can also be heard on our website at www.wilmingtoncatholicradio.com, and we thank you for your prayers and support of Catholic radio.
