OUR MISSION

God calls all members of Our Savior’s Lutheran to

+WELCOME all to faith in Jesus Christ

+WORSHIP our Lord and Savior

+EQUIP us for a faith that works in real life

+SEND us into the world to minister in Jesus’ name

A message from Intern Pastor Sarah Miller

“3I thank my God every time I remember you, 4 constantly praying with joy in every one of

my prayers for all of you, 5 because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until

now.” Phil 1: 3-5

It’s been nearly a year since I first arrived here at OSL as your intern pastor. What an amaz-

ing year it has been! As my internship draws to a close, it is these words of Paul that have

come to my mind. What a joy and blessing it has been to be in ministry with you, to share in

the gospel with you, to learn with and from you, and to grow both in faith and in my role as a

leader in the church.

I want to take the time to thank all of you for your prayers, support, and encouragement over

the past year. You have graciously welcomed me into the life of this congregation and into

your lives and homes. Thank you to all of the committees that have invited me to be a part

of their work and who have patiently answered my questions about the work that they do. I

especially want to thank the members of the internship committee who have met with me

monthly to offer encouragement and feedback and good fellowship. We will have an oppor-

tunity to celebrate this past year of ministry together and the end of internship in worship on

August 23rd.

Although my internship here at OSL will formally be ending, I will not be leaving. Instead I

will transition into a new role as the pastoral assistant for the upcoming school year. I will

be working about half-time while I finish up my coursework at Luther Seminary. I look for-

ward to this continued time of sharing in the gospel.

In peace,

Sarah Miller

Our Database and Students K-12

All students in kindergarten through 11th grade have been advanced one school grade in the church membership database. All students age five by Sept. 1, 2015, are identified as a kindergar-tener for the 2015-16 school year. If you have a child who did not advance a school grade, a child who is five on or before Sept. 1, 2015, and not starting kindergarten, or a child age four who will be in 5K kindergarten this fall, please inform the church office. An accurate grade level in the membership database for the 2015-16 school year assures your child will receive the correct mile-stone celebration invitation throughout next school year.

In addition, all graduating high school seniors have been assigned to his/her own household in the database. Parents, if you have a son/daughter who has graduated from high school in the last few years and is no longer permanently living at home, please provide the office with his/her ad-dress, phone number, and e-mail address. Thanks for your assistance.

Being Prepared—Outdoor Warning Sirens

Here’s some info to help you better understand the warning sirens we hear this time of year. Please note that the siren is meant to prompt you to seek more information...not necessarily that severe weather is

imminent, as is often thought.

Why use outdoor warning sirens? Sirens are still the most effective method to warn the population at large in the short-est amount of time. People who may be outdoors at ball games, in their yard, or anywhere else where they are not in contact with the normal news media channels such as radio, TV or local public address sys-

tems.

Why are they called outdoor warning sirens? Their primary purpose is to alert people who are outside to an emergency that is located near their area and may affect them. While you may be able to hear the siren inside your house, this is not their primary function. (This may include emergencies other

than severe weather...such as a chemical spill).

What should I do if I hear an outdoor warning siren? You should seek shelter inside immediately. Once inside, you should tune in to a local televi-sion, radio station, or weather service radio to find out further information. Local officials will be disseminating information about the emergency through these outlets. Based on this information you can take the appropriate actions

to protect yourself and your family.

When are the outdoor warning sirens tested? They are tested at 10:00 a.m. on the first Monday of each month during the spring and summer sea-

sons. In the event of threatening weather, the test may be postponed.

Shingles

Facts: Varicella-zoster virus is the cause. After a person has had chickenpox, the virus remains dormant. Later it can become active, travel along the affected nerves and cause symptoms. About 1/3 of the US population will get shingles at

some point in their lives.

Symptoms: Pain, often tingling-type, may be-come burning or stabbing. Rash on body or face, usually affecting one side but may be on both. Blisters that develop in the rash site and then become crusted. Fever, headache, fatigue and/or chills.

Treatment: Anti-viral medication, if taken within 72 hrs can shorten the length & severity of symp-

toms. Must be prescribed by a physician.

Complications: Most frequent is post-herpetic neuralgia, a sharp pain along one or more

nerves which may last months or years.

Prevention: A vaccine is recommended for

those age 60 and older. Have you had yours?

Shop for Pop!

Did you know that Coca-Cola allows our youth to rent out its machine for free?

Because of that, we ask for donations of Coke and Diet Coke, instead of Pepsi or

RC, to support Coca-Cola.

Diet Coke, Crush, Orange Fanta, Mountain Dew, and Dr. Pepper, are all needed to help

stock our pop machine downstairs. Donations can be dropped off at the main

office. Thanks!

Vacation Bible School

ELCA Menomonie VBS will be held this summer at Christ Lutheran Church for children currently 3 years old (must be potty

trained) through entering grade 6. We will have 5 counselors from Luther Park joining us to lead grades 1-6 and are currently

in need of a couple adults to help teach our younger classes.

Kickoff on August 2 @ 6 p.m.

Classes August 3-6 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Closing program August 6 @ 6 p.m.

$35/child after July 12

Forms can be picked up in the church office and can either be turned in or mailed in.

Ministry Needs

We are in need of members for both the Milestone team, the Educa-

tion team, and the Youth team! Members of the Milestone team meet

four times a year and assist with leading and organizing some of the

milestones. Education & Youth teams meet on the fourth Tuesday of

each month for an hour each.

Help Needed!!!!

Help is needed to clean the items that go in the busy bags for our youngest church attenders. We are looking for three to four individuals

who will clean items once a month on a rotation. Our busy bag ministry is used by several children each week and is a great way to

welcome children to worship. If you are interested in helping on a regular basis, or even just once, please speak with Amy Loker

[email protected].

We also will be starting to hire new nursery workers to start this fall. Workers must be 14 or older and certified in

babysitting through the Red Cross. Our fall nursery schedule will start in September. Those interested can pick up

applications in the church office.

It’s time to start thinking about Sunday school this fall. We are in

need of teachers for both Kindergarten and Second grade.

Any adults interested should contact Amy at [email protected]. You

don’t have to be a parent to teach, just an adult with a passion for

passing the word on to our younger members. Registrations can be picked up in the church office and are the blue

sheet. Turn them in to the main office, or Amy’s mailbox upstairs.

There is a suggested donation of $20 per student to help cover the

curriculum and materials costs. Our Sunday school kick off open

house and tailgate party will be on Sunday September 13th. Regular

classes will start on September 20th. We look forward to another

great year with our youth!

Parents of students entering grades 7, & 8 should

have received, or will be receiving information

regarding confirmation soon. Our parent

meeting/first lesson will be on September 9th in

the Sanctuary. Please let us know if you plan on

participating this year.

Confirmation guides are needed to partner up

with our 7th grade students for the two years

they are in confirmation. Guides can be parents,

grandparents, or any confirmed member of OSL.

We ask that guides make the two year

commitment to walk in faith with our youth as

they learn, question, and grow. Anyone

interested should contact Amy at
