Landford Community PartnershipThe original consultation for the Landford Community Plan in 2006 highlighted the need for better distribution of information regarding activities in the village.

In 2014 further consultation took place for the update of the plan. The idea for this magazine arose from residents’ comments asking for more information on what activities were going on in the village.

This led two members of the Landford Community Partnership (LCP) to find out what social, leisure and sports activities were available in Landford and the surrounding area. Members of the LCP were amazed by the range of activities that were going on.

Everyone should be grateful to the volunteers who organise and lead these activities. Without their efforts there would be a far more limited range of activities available.

We encourage you to read and enjoy the magazine, marvel at the vast number of events and activities in the immediate area and please join in anything that appeals to you.

Finally, if you have an idea for a new activity and are prepared to pursue and organise it please contact the LCP Secretary, Geoff Chase on 01794 390624

Enjoying your life? This magazine is designed to help you enjoy it more by getting out, meeting people and keeping your body and mind in the best condition you can.

There's a lot happening in Landford and Nomansland and there's even more when you include Bramshaw, Wellow and Whiteparish. This magazine brings it all together. Just about every activity or 'pastime' that comes under the broad sports, leisure and social banner is in here and nearly all of them involve some physical movement.

So why have we done this? Well hardly a day goes by without some new piece of research flagging up the benefits to our physical and mental health of getting more active. Whilst this magazine is for everybody there are significant numbers of people in the 55+ age bracket living in this area and within that group the majority may be either retired or semi-retired. Many, but not all, of the activities listed in Parish Pastimes cater for that age group. However, the benefits of the activities in this magazine are good for everyone, whatever their age. Although many of the activities listed are for the 50+ age group, there are many for younger people.

Later on at pages 16—17 there is an article about active lifestyles for the over 50's, primarily about physical activity, but of course there is mental activity and exercising the brain, (see Healthy Landford Group, Wordplay and the Book Club) the need to mix socially with other people and the opportunity to be part of the community. Many of the activities listed are team sports, including the Nomansland Sports Association for football, and the Bramshaw Cricket Club.

We have covered in full nearly all of the activities in Landford and Nomansland but we have only given basic details of activities outside our parish and not included all the clubs and groups that are based in Bramshaw, Wellow and Whiteparish. They may well be happy to take more members, but we have to make choices about what we could include in this publication.

Although most of the activities listed involve payment of some kind, in general fees are minimal to cover the cost of premises and/or the services of a teacher. So what's to lose? Hopefully by getting involved in one or more of the activities in and around the parish you may well feel better.

Finally a disclaimer. The various types of activity listed here come and go. Teachers change, even venues change and Parish Pastimes has been produced as a 'one off'. However, we have done a lot of research to provide you with this information and if you find errors and/or omissions please let us know. We have provided a notes section in the magazine for this purpose.

We do hope you find Parish Pastimes useful.

Table Tennis

Can you play table tennis? Ever thought of playing regularly. Play can be fast and demands quick reactions. Spinning the ball alters its trajectory and limits an opponent’s options, giving the hitter a great advantage. Come along to the fun, enjoy this activity and improve your fitness.

Mondays 17:00—18:30 Fridays 17:00—18:30

Both table tennis groups are for beginners and welcome newcomers.

Jim Wood 01794 390242

I can guess what you're thinking looking at the title of this article. Another lecture on being fit and all the benefits. Trouble is, the advice that circulates often seems rather overwhelming with the result that many just don't feel it's worth starting. However, if you look at the diagram on the opposite page you will see that you have probably already started, as exercise isn't just about going to the gym or doing a formal sport. It's about shopping, walking briskly to the village store, gardening, and other things that many of us who are over 50 do anyway. So having made a start, you might as well add to it to make yourself feel really good.

It is true that vigorous exercise is great for you, for example, running or a sport like football or tennis, but moderate exercise is good too, walking, cycling or simply carrying the shopping or taking the stairs a bit more. What matters is that you get up out of the chair or the sofa and do something physical. The benefits to your well-being have been spelt out again and again on television, radio and in leaflets in every GP surgery and hospital. Radio 4 recently

quoted an eminent cardiologist who said if you could turn exercise into medicine, it could be sold as a miracle pill. So instead of feeling anxious about how you're not exercising enough or depressed that you're never going to make the recommended 150 minutes a week, start making some small changes that will begin to shift your habits and bring benefits very quickly.

Here are some rules to begin small changes that matter:

1. Don’t sit too long. When you’re at a computer, on a long journey in a car or watching TV for example, break it up. Get up and do something that involves activity.

2. Don’t get obsessed with how many minutes you’ve done, but try and do some exercise most days.

3. Don’t fool yourself that a slow pleasant stroll is exercise. You need to get a bit warm, get your heart going, even if it is just a bit.

4. Find exercise that fits your lifestyle, walking, gardening, joining a village club, having a game of footy or cricket with the grandchildren. If more formal sport like swimming or badminton is for you, go for it.

5. Focus on what you have done and congratulate yourself rather than feeling downcast if you miss a day or find it hard to change your habits.

6. Keep going. If I had a pound for every time somebody looked back and wished they’d done more exercise I’d be a very wealthy person indeed. Small changes can lead to lifetime better health.

Cider Making

The Cider is made using a mobile cider press built by the local wheelwright Oliver Powell over 100 years ago and used around the farms and small holdings in Landford and Nomansland at the time. The process is labour intensive and the results “variable”, however it is an enjoyable day of combined community effort.

Cider making dates are flexible to suit the season, usually the first two weekends of November. Everyone is welcome to join in this community event.

Just keep an eye on the website posts for updates on timing and sessions. If you want to confirm, please send us an email:

Founded in 1877, Bramshaw Cricket Club is situated in the heart of the New Forest.

In the 2016 season Bramshaw and Nomansland joined forces creating a new 3rd team that will play at the Nomansland ground. With the clubs joining we are hoping to keep the tradition of cricket being played in Nomansland whilst making Bramshaw a stronger club and most importantly encouraging children & adults in the Bramshaw, Landford & Nomansland area to play cricket.

The Blackwater Conservation Group formed in May 2013 when a small group of interested people joined forces to help conserve the river Blackwater. An important part of this is building skills, knowledge and expertise within the community to encourage personal action in caring for the environment. A major aspect of conservation is the systematic removal of Himalayan Balsam on the banks of the river.

Voluneeters also conduct regular water sampling and study the biological invertebrate population.

Rambling and Strolling

Fortnightly ‘Rambles’ (approx. 4 - 5 miles) take place throughout the year on Wednesday mornings. ‘Strolls’ (2-3 miles) alternate with the Rambles between March and October. Walks are led by members of the group who volunteer to reconnoitre a route and ensure no one gets lost on the actual walk! The walks are not route marches, some chatting, looking at our surroundings and some photography may take place, especially on the more leisurely strolls.Group size ranges between 5 and mid-teens. On some Strolls even shorter routes are available and may be helpful for people recovering from an illness or who are just getting a bit slow on their ‘pins’. Alternate Wednesdays, 09.30, meet at Beech Grange lay-by. 50p per walk

Photography

We are a small, self-help group of mixed experience, wishing to improve our camera skills, composition and digital processing of photographs. Our cameras range from film, digital compact, bridge to digital SLR.We include practical sessions (indoor/outdoor), projects, indoor peer review, short demonstrations and occasional talks by visitors. We have monthly themes to guide our practical photography between meetings, followed by presentation of images using laptop and projector. We also produce a monthly A4 print on any subject.

Venue Nomansland Reading Room or on location.

Third Thursday each month 14:30—16:30 | £1.50 per indoor session.

Dentaid Support Group

A Good Neighbour Service

It is so important to be able to call on friends and neighbours when you find yourself in difficulties. The purpose of LINK is to provide that Good Neighbour in the form of either a befriending person (i.e. sitting with you, reading to you, etc.) or transport when you don’t have means of your own, or are not able to use public transport. In rural areas such as ours, if incapacitated through illness or accident, this is often very inconvenient when you wish to attend surgery, hospital, other medical treatment or just go shopping. The voluntary services group Community First have helped in the setting up of LINK schemes (run as charities) throughout the county of Wiltshire to address these problems. If you would like to volunteer you can obtain more detailed information about the LINK schemes in Wiltshire online at www.wiltshirelink.org.uk

For LINK service call: 01794 884390

Dentaid is an international dental charity based in Landford.

From here we send reconditioned dental surgeries and portable equipment to dentists overseas so they can run outreach clinics in poor and remote communities. In the UK Dentaid has a mobile dental unit for treating homeless and vulnerable people.

There are numerous volunteering opportunities for engineers, electronic engineers, drivers, mechanics and craftspeople including those with skills in metalwork, sewing, maintenance and electrical testing and, of course, anyone with dental experience.

We would love to hear from you and you will meet a friendly welcoming and busy charity that is making great improvements to oral health, both here and abroad.
