The Parish Pump was started in 1979 toprovide a free community magazine in theparish. It began as, and still is, a joint venture,

combining the church magazine and village magazine. The Parish Pump is sponsored by the Parochial Church Council and DebdenParish Council. Both bodies contribute financially to the cost of running themagazine by means of a donation, received annually. It is intended that themagazine reflects all aspects of village life within the parish and provides anopportunity for community matters to be raised. In addition to the informationrecorded in the magazine, our sister publication, the Debden Directory provides ahost of useful contact numbers for services ranging from bus times, local plumbers, doctors and restaurants. If you do not have a copy, please contact a member of thecommittee.

The magazine has editors but no official reporters. Consequently, an interestingmagazine depends on articles, news, etc. coming from people in the village. The

closing date for submitting material is: the 12th

of each month. The editors job is to edit. This means fitting the material into the space availableand trying to ensure there is a reasonable balance of views on controversialsubjects etc. Consequently, it is not always possible to publish everythingsubmitted and sometimes changes have to be made to the length of a contribution.Non topical articles cannot always be published in the next issue but will appearlater unless you are told otherwise. Contributions of up to 400 words have a betterchance of being published in full than longer ones.

Please note that the present and past editions of the Parish Pump are nowavailable on line on the new website www.debden.org and that any material

    submitted will be automatically featured on the website. If you wish to have yourname and/or contact details (which must normally accompany any contributions)withheld from the printed edition and/or not to appear on the website, this must bestated at the time of submission. Copy for inclusion in the next edition should beemailed by the 12th of the month to;

    [email protected].

There is also a folder in the shop for submission of written or typed copy. The current editors of the Parish Pump, who have the sole prerogative of theeditorial policy (so dont blame anyone else) are;Mike Fairchild [email protected] Lyons [email protected]

Advertising rates per issue are; full page 10.00; half page 8.00; quarter page or

    EDITORIAL

At the time of writing Affinity Water is busy replacing the old iron watermains with new plastic pipes; if it leads to fewer water leaks, it will bewonderful. During the process we have been warned that our watersupply may be interrupted. Were so used to turning on the tap andexpecting a fresh burst of water that its been a bit of a nuisance whenthe supply is turned off and we have had to think about storage ofwater for both domestic use and drinking. Of course water is a utilityfor which we pay and so, quite rightly, we expect to have a reliableservice. However, improvements are essential so while the work

goes on, I find I have to keep telling myself that I mustnt grumble. There are still quite a few people living in Debden who rememberhaving to get their daily water from the village pumps. Would we copewith that nowadays? Actually in Debden we would

because of our sense of community spirit. Look on pages 5 and 35to read about those who have worked tirelessly for the Royal BritishLegion. Theres the news that the New Village Hall Group areplanning to use local firms and volunteers to achieve their goal. Theshop continues with the help of many volunteers; the volunteermanagement committee of the Pre- School work tirelessly to ensureits success. People are busy organising a Barn Dance to raise funds

for the Village Hall; a festival of Sails is planned in the church to raisemoney for the upkeep of that lovely building and to ensure that wehave a building for the rites of passage.

As all this goes on, we find we are on the short list for the Best Villagecompetition. I know the judges will look at the absence of litter, thestate of footpaths, ponds, trees, churchyard as well as communityspirit. I read that last year in Lincolnshire 80 judges travelledhundreds of miles around the county giving over 900 volunteer hours;I dont know how many judges there are for Essex but I am sure that ifyou added all the hours that Debdenites give each year it would be lotmore. I think that the category for community spirit should be worth

twice the number of marks than the other sections; if we dont winperhaps we should campaign for a change in the mark system and ifwe do win, I believe that the community spirit will have played a vitalpart.

    New Vil lage Hall

Were pulling it all together says18-strong building group

A new village hall for Debden has moved closer with theestablishment of an 18-strong steering group representing the

local community and with the range of skills required to overseethis ambitious building project.

Debden New Village Hall Group was formally recognised by Debden ParishCouncil at its meeting on J une 5 when it was agreed to set up a meetingbetween the group, the council and the village hall trustees to consider thelatest plan. The new group is proposing a new-build structure larger than theexisting hall and incorporating the village shop, a badminton court and sportschanging facilities. A major difference to previous proposals is that to reducecosts the hall would be built using largely local contractors and volunteers.

A controversial aspect is the proposal to locate the new hall on the site of theexisting sports pavilion, which would be demolished and the facilitytransferred to a self-contained pavilion within the new building. The grouprecognises this will be opposed by some people in the village but argues that

it is the most logical site, enabling the existing hall to continue to be usedduring construction and opening up the whole site to create a village centre. The parish council, the trustees, the village shop and user groups includingthe football club have been party to the discussions to date.

    Public meeting

Following the meeting between the group, the council and the trustees wherekey issues will be resolved, a public meeting will be held on WednesdayJuly 24th at 8pm in the Village Hall to report progress to the community. The group hopes that every household and organisation in the village will berepresented at this meeting to hear the plans and to ask questions.

Stewart Luck, project manager for the New Village Hall Group, told the

Pump: Its been a long time coming but I honestly believe that we are nowvery close to getting agreement on a new village hall that is affordable andmeets the needs not just of the present community but future generations. Itis inevitable that some aspects of our plans, including how it is going to befunded and how we can best accommodate the needs of all the users, maybe controversial but if we all approach this with the best interests of the widercommunity at heart, it will be an outstanding success and a permanentreminder of what a community can do when it pulls together.

    LEGION MEMBERS POPPY APPEAL AWARDS

Seven members of Debden Branch Royal British Legionhave been presented with awards for their continuousefforts in collecting for the annual RBL Poppy Appeal. The presentations were made by Colonel (Retd) RogerBurgess OBE, the Branch Chairman.

At a recent Branch Meeting, the Branch Secretary,Mrs Chris Griffin was presented with a For Merit Badgefor 25 years involvement. A Certificate for 15 yearsservice was presented to Mr Michael Clarke andCertificates for 10 years involvement were presented toTrevor and Bridget Fry, Christopher Hamill, Tina Knightand Malcolm Linscott. Altogether, the recipients havebeen collecting for a combined period of more than 90years.

    Flashing speed limit sign approved

Checks carried out by Essex Highways have confirmedthat the speed of vehicles travelling through Debden issufficiently high to justify a 30 mph flashing sign.Following concerns expressed by Debden Speed Watchto the Parish Council, speed checks were carried out byHighways in Thaxted Road near Rook End Lane andbetween Ivy Todd Hill and the High Street. Cablesacross the road measured speed and vehicle type. Tojustify a flashing sign, the mean speed has to be 35mph.

The Rook End Lane site met the criterion but not IvyTodd Hill. This was a surprise because we catch farmore drivers speeding coming up the hill, said MikeFairchild, Speed Watch co-ordinator. Highways willprovide the sign but an installation date has not yetbeen given.

Salvaged Dornier was heading for Debden

The German Dornier 17 bomber just salvaged from the Goodwin Sands washeading for Fighter Command bases at Debden and Hornchurch when it wasshot down in 1940. In an attempt to wipe out RAF Fighter Command,Hermann Goering ordered continuous bombing raids on airfields in thesoutheast. The Dornier was part of a raid on August 26 by 150 Germanaircraft including 40 bombers escorted by Messerschmitt 109s and 110s.

According to Patrick Bishop, author ofWings: the RAF at War 1912-2012,writing in the Sunday Times, most of the aircraft headed for Biggin Hill andKenley but the Dorniers peeled off for RAF Debden and the base atHornchurch. After losing its bearings, the recently-salvaged Dornier was shotdown by an RAF fighter appropriately from Hornchurch and belly-floppedand cartwheeled on the Goodwins. Two crewmembers died but two survivedincluding the pilot, Feldwebel (Sgt) Willi Effmert, who was taken prisoner.Picture: the Dornier before it was brought to the surface.

    NEWSFROMTHE PARISH CHURCH OF STMARY

    Dear Friends,

Maybe I am just old-fashioned, but having, like many of you I am sure, been made to write lengthy letters to grandparents, aunts, uncles andfriends in the few days after Christmas and birthday, now I havecome of age I do rather enjoy receiving thank you notes. I amheartened to know that something I have done or given has beenappreciated and I feel saddened that hand written thank you letters

are on the decline an email or text message is not quite the same! So, here in print, is a heartfelt thank you to Bobby and VirginiaChapman for all they have done for Debden Church and the village, during more than 40 years. Bobby has served as Churchwarden andwas an invaluable source of support and advice during the building ofthe New Room in 2000. Virginia has served on the PCC, been chair ofgovernors at the Church school, arranged flowers, provided cakesand quiches and much more. Both have quietly and behind thescenes been so very generous with their time and energy, ensuringthat Debden Church has remained a place filled with life where Godcan be worshipped and glorified by all who enter its doors. Bobby and

Virginia, thank you from us all: we wish you many blessings and greathappiness in your new home.

While we are on the subject, I wonder if sometimes we neglect tothank God for his goodness and his many gifts. J ust as thankingsomeone brings us closer to him or her so thanking God helps usdraw closer to him. There is so much for which we can thank him the beauty of the created world, our families and friends, our children, those who support us, those who care for us when we are ill or inneed the list is endless. Please let us remember to thank him.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you most humble and

    hearty thanks for all your goodness and loving kindness.We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life;

but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus

Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And give us, we pray, such a

sense of all your mercies that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we show

forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to yourservice, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus

Christ our Lord. Amen. (adapted from The Book of Common Prayer)God bless you all, Hilary

As many customers and staff will be aware, we havehad to make do with an inadequate electric heaterfor some months. The air conditioning system, whichwas installed in 2006, broke down earlier this yearand was deemed irreparable. We are therefore verygrateful to the Searle Trust for providing a Grant to enable us to replace the

Heat Pump, on the roof, and heat exchanger inside the Shop. Installation willtake place during the first week of J uly, in time for us to have fully functioningair conditioning when the long expected heat wave arrives!

Our vegetable supplier has been providing some very delicious asparagus, amongst other lines, and we hope to see an increased amount of vegetablesas the Summer progresses.

However, due to the lack of support for Dorringtons bread on a Saturdaymorning, the Shop Committee has decided to cancel the order from the1st J uly.

When you next visit the Shop, spare some time to investigate our stock ofstationery. You will find a bigger and better supply of very reasonably priced

wrapping paper among other things. Also, on the top of the shelving you willfind a selection of unique bags and other attractive items, all of which havebeen locally produced. They make excellent presents, or a treat foryourselves!

    Our Day Out

In the cold, bleak days of early February, the idea of a barge trip down theRiver Orwell in May was a light to keep us going. However, spring nevercame and Tuesday May 21st dawned with the usual cold wind and grey skies;at least it wasnt raining.

We all gathered by the Shop and left promptly at 9 am no room formalingerers - enjoying a pleasant coach journey to Ipswich. The ThamesBarge, Thistle, was waiting for us at the quay and, fortified with coffee, wedonned a few more layers of clothes and went on board.

Soon we were motoringthrough the lock and ontothe river. Once under theOrwell Bridge, the sailswere put up and we feltthe surge of the boat as itcut through the water. Wepassed Shotley andWoolverstone Marinas,Pin Mill, and Suffolk YachtHarbour. As weapproached the port ofFelixstowe, we wereamazed by the size of thecontainer ships.

Bridge over windy water. Passing under the Orwell Bridge

Debden residents are a hardy lot and nearly everyone stayed on deck; thereally brave souls stood at the bow whilst others huddled around the wheelhouse towards the stern or managed to find seating slightly out of the wind.

Lunch was wonderful; a heartyPloughmans with salads andthen hot fruit crumble withlashings of cream followed bycoffee or tea or perhaps a tot ofrum! The return trip was underpower as there was a head wind.

We arrived back at Ipswich coldbut having thoroughly enjoyedthe day; it had been a chance tocatch up with other villagers andto just relax.

    News from DebdenPentecostal Church

    Dear Friends,

For many years we have had

connections with Carol Seymour andGinny Perkins who are missionariesworking in the southern area of theCongo. They have been undertaking adiverse range of ministries whichinclude reaching people in remoteareas (often travelling on dilapidatedroads and over precarious bridges),radio and television broadcasts, andministry to prisoners. The conditions in these prisons are verydire and the prisoners even have to rely on friends and relativesto bring in food.

Earlier this year the security situation in the area where theywere working deteriorated very rapidly . We prayed and listenedwith bated breath for news as our friends had to flee the countryand cross the border by foot into Zambia. We are very muchlooking forward to a visit from Carol and Ginny later in themonth to hear both about their adventures and how God isworking miraculously in peoples lives in Congo.

Finally, an advance notice that we are expecting another visit

from Yan Hadley on the evening of 18th August.

    God bless,Simon Gale
