Ordinary Time arrives…

As of this past Monday, January 13, 2020, Ordinary Time began for the Church. Why call it Ordinary Time? It’s because the Church simply doesn’t have any major occurrences or events to celebrate from its history. Easter has the season of Lent as a time to prepare for the Easter SEASON. That’s a full three months of the Church calendar between those two seasons. Christmas has the season of Advent to prepare for the Christmas SEASON. That’s a total of about 7 weeks of the Church calendar. So with those four special times of the year accounted for, there are still 34 Sundays to celebrate and this is what we call Ordinary Time. There are plenty of dates in the regular Gregorian calendar when the Church remembers particular saints. There are many secular holidays that the Church also holds dear.

A good example is the remembering of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday. The Church recognizes the vision and hope Dr. King worked tirelessly for so that humanity would see human beings as God sees us without prejudice – as His children. Dr. King has not been recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church (and likely will not be), but the Church knows and believes in what Dr. King stood for. The third Monday of January (commemorating Dr. King’s birthday) is a Federal Holiday and has been since 1983.

In early February (specifically the 2nd) the Church celebrates another event in Jesus’ life – the fourth Joyful Mystery of the Rosary, The Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple. It’s an important event in Jesus’ life, but there isn’t a denoted season of preparation for the day, nor a period of time in which we focus upon it. And it’s kind of strange to consider, as an aside, but did you know that the fifth Joyful Mystery of the Rosary – The Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple doesn’t even have a specific date we celebrate just THAT event?

I’ve written about the subject of “time” in the past. “Church time” is about as confusing as this can be. Believe it or not, here is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says about how she measures time: Paragraph 1170 says

“At the Council of Nicaea in 325, all the Churches agreed that Easter, the Christian Passover, should be celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon (14 Nisan) after the vernal equinox. Because of different methods of calculating the 14th day of the month of Nisan, the date of Easter in the Western and Eastern Churches is not always the same. For this reason, the Churches are currently seeking an agreement in order once again to celebrate the day of the Lord’s Resurrection on a common date.”

I give you that explanation to just say two things about Ordinary Time – the date of Easter each year is the basic “center” of “Church time,” and that she works backwards to figure out the dates of the special seasons. Here is a basic list of this year’s dates working back from Easter on April 12th. Ash Wednesday is 6½ weeks before Easter. Since December 25th is ALWAYS Christmas Day and was a Wednesday in 2019, there were three Sundays before the end of the Christmas season. Therefore, the 6½ weeks in between the end of the Christmas season and Ash Wednesday this year are part of Ordinary Time. HOWEVER, in the Gregorian calendar this year, February has 29 days (the whole year is 366 days). Therefore, 366 days from Christmas 2019 will be on Friday, not a Thursday, in 2020. See? Simple, right?

Does this stuff tend to matter to the bulk of humanity and how we go about our daily lives as disciples of Jesus? It may not matter to the average Joe, but in the grand scheme of the world, maybe it does. After all, scientists have tried to measure out just how long Earth and time have existed. Maybe they ask the Church, right?

Keep seeking everyone! Fr. Mike

January 19, 2020 ~ Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: In the Gospel after Jesus was baptized, John testified

saying, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove…and remain upon Him.” As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, know that you are a sign of God’s Spirit of love to those who are suffering.

Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children

January 22 The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However,

we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no. 373, designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the “Day of Prayer for the Legal

Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life

and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.” As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or

giving alms.

Living Stewardship

January 19, 2020 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time “Now the Lord has spoken who formed

me as his servant from the womb...” ISAIAH 49:5 God have given each of us different gifts. In order for God’s plan to work, you have to do what God is calling you to do and I have to do what God is calling me to do. And guess what? God has given each of us a different plan! So, stop comparing yourself to others. Don’t let envy and jealousy enter your life. Be thankful for the gifts God has given you and generously share them with others.

STEWARDSHIP PRAYER Oh Lord, giver of life and source

of our freedom, we are reminded that Yours is “the earth in its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it.” We know that it is from your hand that we have received all we have and are and will be. Gracious and loving God,we understand that you call us to be the stewards of Your abundance, the caretakers of all you have entrusted to us. Help us always to use your gifts wisely and teach us to share them generously.

May our faithful stewardship bear witness to the love of Christ in our lives. We pray this with grateful hearts in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Reflecting on God’s Word To be a disciple of Jesus Christ means to learn from him. He is the teacher, we the students; he is the master, we his servants. But what is it we are to learn? One important title for Jesus is the Lamb of God who has come to serve by taking away our sin. He serves by leading us to participate in the holiness of God. We are to do the same for

others. Jesus came to understand his own calling by reading and praying the book of the prophet Isaiah, especially the four poems found there called the Servant Songs. Today we hear part of the second song in which the servant professes how he was formed as servant from the womb, not only to bring back Israel to God, but to be a light to the nations, so God’s “salvation may reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). Those who serve Jesus as disciples are to join in this work of bringing God’s salvation to the world. Paul recognizes this in his greeting to the Corinthians, noting his call to be an apostle of Christ, one sent by God to the church at Corinth, which has been made holy in Christ and called to be holy. Paul is sent not only to them, but to “all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 1:2). God’s will is our holiness. By responding to the call to know Jesus as the Lamb of God, we accept the invitation to participate in this holiness and become the vehicle for inviting others to dwell there. —James A. Living God’s Word When at Mass, we call on Jesus several times as the Lamb of God—at the beginning in the Gloria and twice in preparation for Communion. Pray for our world this day to recognize Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Copyright © 2013, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO The Cross of San Damiano ~~ St. Francis of Assisi prayed before the cross and heard the Lord say to him “Renew My Church”

A Prayer for “Renew My Church”

Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us

May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

to hear you clearly to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations.
