THE TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Prayer and Liturgy

WE WELCOME those who have recently

entered into our faith through the waters of Baptism: Emma Joyce Kleehammer, daughter of Andrew and Nicole; Emily Judith Livingston, daughter of David and Shannon; and Clark Andrew Livingston, son of David and Shannon.

DEAR PARISHIONERS: I want to share with you the latest update from the diocese about the Pope’s Mass outdoors at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on September 23

rd at approximately 4:15pm.

We have been informed that we will receive five tickets: two are for seats and three are for standing. The Mass will include the canonization of Blessed Junipero Serra. The Mass will be in Spanish and it will be approximately two-and-a-half hours long, not counting the required time to be there before the Mass actually starts. There will be numerous security checks to gain entrance into the Catholic University Mall facing the East Portico of the Basilica where the Mass will be celebrated. Large video screens will be erected since some of the areas will have obstructed views.

We will draw names from a hat for the seats and standing positions that have been designated for our parish. Before you enter your name realize that no one will be admitted to this area without a ticket and the ticket needs to be held by the person designated to receive it – in other words you can’t share it with someone else. I will draw the names of registered parishioners Wednesday, September 9

th, with all

requests needed the day before. Submit your request (one name per request and one request per person) to me at [email protected] Good luck, and I hope that those submitting their names truly have the intent of actually going to the Mass and will not waste the few tickets allotted to our parish.

For those planning on watching from home the Mass will be broadcast on www.walkwithfrancis.org; www.usccb.org; www.ewtn.com; and the app of www.usacatholic.church. Catechetical resources are available at www.adw.org/lesson-plans/ and evangelization material is available at www.adw.org/packedpews.

God Bless,

Father Tom

THIS SUNDAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 35:4-7a; Psalm 146: 7, 8-9, 9-10; James 2:1-5; Mark 7:31-37

In today’s Gospel, we experience God in Jesus who, through healing the deaf man, brings hope of a New World to the whole human family. St. Francis de Sales remarks: Hope, like an arrow, darts up to the gate of Heaven; it cannot enter there because it is a virtue wholly of earth. Hope is possible because God places in our hearts the desire for eternal life. He then assures us we can attain it. God places hope in our heart through the many promises made in Scriptures. God’s assurance that we can achieve a life of eternal joy strengthens our desires and calms our heart. This calm is the root of the virtue of hope. While our hopes and expectations bring joy to our heart, they also may bring sadness to fervent souls. Not finding ourselves the saints we hoped to be, we are often discouraged in the pursuit of virtue that leads to holiness. Have patience, lay aside that anxious care of yourself, and have no fear that anything will be wanting to you. We need not hurry so fast. However, we must use the means that are given to us according to our vocation, and then remain in peace. We need to walk ardently, yet tranquilly, carefully but confidently. That is to say, we must have more confidence in Divine Providence than in our own work. When all human aid fails us, God takes over and cares for us. We have God, who is our All. Let us trust in God who will make us holy in time. For God, under whose guidance we have embarked, will always be attentive in providing us with whatever is necessary for our perfection. Let us begin to live well, according to our vocation: patiently, gently, and simply. No one who hoped and trusted in God’s Goodness and Providence has been disappointed.

LITURGICAL REFLECTIONS

FROM FATHER DON

Father Don continues his monthly series with further discussion of “The Liturgy of the Word”.

The Liturgy of the Word begins with the first reading, continues through the second, the Psalm and Gospel, the homily, the Creed and the intercessions. When I was a boy – way back in the middle of the last century – you could miss the entire Liturgy of the Word, but as long as you arrived before the priest took the veil off the chalice (veil!), you could say that you had been to Mass and fulfilled your Sunday obligation. Of course, back then there were only two readings – an epistle and Gospel – and they were read in Latin. Although the Gospel was read a second time in English it was not until the late 1950’s that we heard the epistle in English as well. The sermon often had no connection to the readings and, especially if it was hot, the sermon was often omitted. Today no one would claim that you could miss the Liturgy of the Word and still claim to have attended Mass substantially. Why? What makes the Liturgy of the Word so important? The whole point of hearing the scriptures (and the homily which reflects on them) is to arouse our faith; that’s why the Creed is part of the Liturgy of the Word. Then, with a lively faith, we are empowered to praise, glorify and thank God in the Eucharistic prayer, to be united with God in the Eucharist, and to be sent back into the world. That’s why the church now speaks of two tables at a Eucharistic liturgy: the table of the Word and the table of the Eucharist. Both are necessary for our growth in faith. Note: Last month I promised to reflect on the choice of readings for Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter, but upon reflection it seems more appropriate to hold off until we are in Advent. So stay tuned.

THE TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

NEXT WEEKEND’S READINGS: Next weekend

we celebrate The Twenty-fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time. Please prepare for Mass and the Homily by reflecting on these texts from God’s Word:

Isaiah 50:4-9 The servant of God accepts trials because he trusts in the power of God. The rejection that he meets is itself a sign that he proclaims God’s Word. Psalm 116: I Will Walk Before the Lord, in the Land of the Living. The poet, first recalling a past time of need,

offers up heartfelt praise. James 2:14-18 Could faith dispense with acts? It would then be a purely theoretical, abstract commitment. As communion with the person of Christ, it accomplishes

Christ’s works and thus testifies to its vitality.

Mark 8:27-35 Peter acclaims Jesus as the Messiah. Knowing that this title contains ambiguity, Jesus clearly announces what road will lead Him to glory: suffering and death. The disciples themselves will have to follow Him on the road of the cross.

WE PRAY for those who have died, especially

Father Robert J. Hindley, OSFS.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BLESSED MOTHER!

Monday, September 8th, is

the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Francis, from the beginning of his pontificate, has shown us the depth of his devotion to her. Do you now that early in the morning of the day after he was elected Pope, Francis visited the Basilica of St. Mary Major to pray in front of an image of the Blessed Mother? Within many of his homilies and speeches, Francis mentions the important role Mary has had and continues to have in our lives. How can you celebrate Mary’s special day, and honor her within your families? Consider the many Marian prayers you could pray together, especially the Rosary. Perhaps you could stop in at St. John Neumann and visit the Marian Chapel and pray the Magnificat together. At your evening dinner table, take turns sharing why you believe Mary is such a good model for each of us. Do some research and find out why Mary’s feast day is on the date of her birth, unlike almost all the other saints, whose feast days are on the date of their death? In the picture above, do you know who the two children with Mary are? And what is significant about the three of them being pictured together? When you wake on this feast day, begin your morning prayer with a quote from St. Francis de Sales, "Let us run to Mary, and, as her little children, cast ourselves into her arms with a perfect confidence."

from 6:30 – 8:00pm in the de Chapel. If you and your student are interested in exploring this ministry, please contact the Liturgy Office at 703-860-6151 for more information.

EXPOSITION AND ADORATION "Mary's adoration was profound, interior, intimate. It was the gift of herself. She offered her whole self to the service of love of the Eucharistic God. For love lays down no conditions, makes no reservations; it thinks no longer of self, lives no longer for self; it is a

stranger to itself and lives only for the God which it loves. Everything in Mary was directed to the Blessed Sacrament as Its center and end. A current of grace and love established itself between the Heart of Jesus-Hostia and the heart of Mary-Adoratrix. These hearts were like two flames blended into one. God was then perfectly adored by His creature," - St. Peter Julian Eymard

This week of Our Lady’s Birthday, come join your fellow parishioners on Thursday, September 10

th, anytime from

3:00pm – 8:00pm in the de Sales Chapel for exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. A sign-up sheet is on the Welcome Desk this weekend with one-half hour time increment commitments.

THE IMPACT OF JUSTFAITH These are some of the situations

brought home to participants of JustFaith at our meetings:

Homeboy Industries in a gang-fraught neighborhood of Los Angeles

was founded on compassion, plus energy and insight.

Micro-economies in war-bereft areas of Africa or along barbed-wire

fenced borders have brought transformative relief through solidarity that brings together purpose and means.

The homeless, sometimes helpless and often hopeless, wandering

our neighborhoods have names and respond to warm greetings and kind treatment.

“Prayer, compassion, and solidarity define the transformative experience of attending JustFaith. Through reading and discussion we exchange our anxieties about what we can effectively do for those who have fallen outside our privileged realm. Immersion sessions train us to meet, talk and do for those who live on the margins. Through JustFaith we are given the chance to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and give comfort to the lonely.” Martha Ritchie, JustFaith 2014-15

For further information about the 2015-2016 JustFaith program, please contact co-facilitators Tom and Michele Costello at 703-860-0022 or 757-646-5937, or by email at [email protected].

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION: “Did not God choose those

who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the

kingdom that he promised to those who love him?” (JAMES2:5)

What is more important – being rich in faith or rich in possessions? Society teaches us that possessions are most important. God teaches a different lesson. When we are rich in faith we know that material things really do not matter and we are more willing to share what we have.
