NOTES FROM FATHER BOB…

EASTER SUNDAY 2014

“HE IS RISEN!…HE IS TRULY RISEN!” ALLELUIA!!!

Mary of Magdala comes before dawn on the first day of the week to the tomb of Jesus. She had witnessed his suffering; she had been present at the cross when he breathed his last. Her life had been profoundly changed for the better by this man – the gospel tells us that Jesus had cast seven demons out of Mary. He had set her free and she had reason enough to love him. So she came to honor him, perhaps to prepare his body, perhaps simply because in her love she could not let go and just needed to be near her Lord. When she saw that first sign of resurrection, the stone which had been rolled away, she did not understand. The two disciples she hurried to tell ran to the scene. The Beloved Disciple (John) was hesitant about entering the tomb. Peter, typically, went straight in, but though he saw further signs of the resurrection – the folded cloths – he too did not understand. It is only when John sees – really sees – that he makes that leap of faith and believes. The first reading tells us that Jesus did not appear to everyone after his resurrection – only to those whom God had chosen; only to those who were his disciples, who could really see the signs; only, you might say, to those who truly love him. It is these people who had a real encounter with the Risen Lord – who “have eaten and drunk with him after his resurrection.” They were the ones who had their lives turned around by this man, to the point where Peter says that they are more than friends, more than fans, but ordered to be witnesses to the resurrection. Why are we here today? Perhaps like Mary we simply want to express our love of Jesus, like the fans who visit their hero’s grave. John stood at the edge of the tomb, not daring to enter. Is that us? Are we reluctant to go any further with our faith, perhaps afraid of where it might lead? Perhaps we are like Peter – oblivious to the signs of God’s presence, to the signs of the resurrection in our own lives? Eventually, John and Mary and Peter do move on from their grief and confusion. John “sees and believes.” Mary recognizes the Lord in the garden when he speaks her name. Peter moves from confusion and ignorance to fearless faith and witness. Where do we stand? As Christians we are not just distant admirers or grateful fans. Paul tells us: “we have been brought back to true life with Christ.” Through our baptism, we actually share his journey through death to new life. And so like Peter we seek to be witnesses, witnesses to what he has done for us. By faith, we acknowledge his resurrection, we continue to eat and drink with him, and we hope to share his glory. But if we are to be credible witnesses, we need to have that first hand encounter with the risen Lord – we need to see the signs of his presence in our lives, as John, Mary and Peter did. We can only bear witness to what we have personally experienced. If we love Christ – if we follow his way of love – then he will lead us to see and believe. He will enable us to become powerful witnesses to his resurrection – and to our own, to the glory which awaits all those who put their trust in him. On behalf of Fathers Edgar Rodriguez, Ken Baker, Ron Anglim and myself, we wish you all a blessed and Holy Easter filled with the love of our Risen Lord. May each of you grow in grace throughout this holy season. Rejoice and be glad for He has Risen! He has truly Risen! Easter Blessings, Father Bob Pastor

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION HAPPENINGS

On Saturday, April 5, the 2nd Graders from our school and Religious Education program, who have been preparing to receive their First Communion, gathered with their parents for a mini-retreat. The children were divided into groups, and after prayer, moved through four different stations including a Meditation experience, a Mass game, a placemat craft with fill-ins on the Eucharist, and practiced receiving the host. Parents accompanied and assisted their children throughout the morning. The morning culminated with a wonderful presentation and a review of the Mass and the vessels used at the liturgy given by Fr. Bob. We are grateful to the parents, teachers and catechists who have had the privilege of helping to nurture the children in their sacramental preparations. Please continue to pray for these little ones. Paulette Bolton Director of Religious Education

TIME TO REGISTER Registration information/registration for next year’s Religious Education Program is available online at http://stcletusparish.com/ministries/religious-education/re/ or you may call (708) 352-2383 for more information.

Dear Clergy, Staff and Parishioners of St. Cletus, We would like to thank you for the prayers offered during my Mom’s final days and for all the words, messages of sympathy, prayers, cards and mass intentions we received following her passing. St. Cletus is indeed a special place we are proud to call our spiritual home and we are truly blessed to be a part of it. We’d like to wish you and your families a Very Happy Easter.

Peace and Blessings to you all. Dcn Stuart & Marlene Heyes

JESUS IS RISEN, ALLELUIA! During the past six weeks, our parish community has joined with our brothers and sisters

across the world in prayer, fasting and almsgiving, with a special focus on the poorest members of our global community served by Catholic Relief Services. Our lives were touched by stories from Kenya, Guatemala, the Philippines, Malawi, Haiti and the United States. May the spirit of the risen Christ inspire and guide us as we continue our commitment to those who are in most need in our world. If you have not already returned your rice bowl, please drop if off at the rectory during business hours, or place it in the designated basket in the narthex when you come to Mass next weekend. Thank you for your generosity.

To all those who support our pantry - parishioners, friends in the community, and food pantry volunteers - May your heart and home be filled with the Joy and Promise of Easter as you continue to serve the Lord and celebrate His resurrection! Thank you for continuing to add food pantry items to your grocery list. Some of our greatest needs at this time include cereal, canned meat/chicken, boxed potatoes, crackers, condiments (salad dressing, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, etc.), canned tomatoes/tomato sauce and canned milk. All in-date non perishables are greatly appreciated! Mary Beth Ford Director of Social Concerns

St. Cletus Adult Service Program (ASP)

After working with DuPage Habitat for Humanity, our group has been looking for similar projects that might be of interest, as well as volunteers from our community to join us. Here are some exciting ways to “give back” to your community in the company of a great group of people! The South Suburban branch of the Habitat for Humanity has a couple programs - including rehabbing homes for Veterans - for which they are seeking volunteers. The description of one of their current projects in nearby Hazel Crest follows: Our recent work with a group at the Hazel Crest property has blossomed into a full gut rehab, as we discovered significant termite damage. That was taken care of with Orkin but the residual damage is extensive. We will need to replace beams in the basement and some exterior framing. Same with some areas of first floor. The home is now gutted which will allow for plumbing and electrical sub's to get started. We will insulate and sheetrock once their work is done. Needs some new windows, exterior work on fascia, garage needs structural work, probably tearing out concrete steps and replacing with wood, etc. etc., etc. Where your team fits is dependent on when, skill levels and how often. We have also created a fledgling program to help with such services as landscaping (trimming, cut grass, weeding), property clean-ups, labor to paint rooms or sections of house that can be handled in one day, and minor repairs such as: repair loose or broken cabinet hinges, latches, window handles; changing light bulbs; checking smoke detectors; replacing broken windows; repairing loose trim, molding, and stair railings; replace furnace filters; re-light pilot on gas appliances; replace defective switches/outlets (as long as electrical can be turned off); hanging pictures, etc. We are not professional contractors, but homeowners, like yourselves, that have strengths in many areas and a desire to help others. Volunteers are asked to perform what they can physically do; volunteers in a trade or profession may utilize their skills as needed and within the limits of the program. If you would like to become part of the pool of adult volunteers that we can count on to help out as your schedule allows, please contact Wes Rehwoldt at (708) 579-3186 or [email protected]
