Dear Parishioners,Our winter edition of The Parishioner comes out in the month of much joy and

celebration and much stress. The press for all that this season entails seems only togrow each year. And each year priests across the country wonder how to give attentionto the season of Advent.

Advent is a gem in the life of the Church that can easily be swept away. There isthat big wreath in the church as something of a reminder and the fact that the church isthe only place not decorated. But, realistically, those reminders barely compete with thecrush of sights, sounds and smells that fill our stores and businesses and cars and homesand on and on.

And yet, the fact remains that Jesus invites us to celebrate his birth as the reason forit all. On that first Christmas the newborn child was hidden away as well. The littletown of Bethlehem had a big event going on with the census that was called. Everyonewas scrambling and the Savior of the world had no place to stay. While most did notnotice, there was a star that a few followed and the shepherds of the field had a specialinvitation.

On Christmas now, the Church shines that star for those who will follow and theinvitation is given to the humble who will gather around the Child. Advent is meant tobe a journey as we look ahead to what is coming. The waiting builds anticipation but weshould consider what it is we anticipate.

The more commercial our December the more relief is all we feel when it ends. Themore spiritual these days the more joy we feel and the more we hope the celebration willlinger.

One of the great ways to celebrate Advent well is the liturgy of the Church. Comingto Mass even during the week can change our experience of these days. The readingsand prayers point us toward the gift that God gives and prepare our hearts to receive HisSon. It might seem like one more thing on the schedule is impossible, but the Mass isn’tone more thing. The Mass is the one thing that offers Jesus Christ as our food. Ratherthan drain away more time the Mass puts time into perspective because our Lord is sonear.

For those who cannot come to Mass the prayers and readings are still available. Iwant to recommend for this Advent season the resources found online through CreightonUniversity. The website is:

http://onlineministries.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/Advent/

On these pages you will find the daily opening prayer for Mass, called the Collect. It is a brief prayer that well sets the tone for each day and builds our anticipation forwhat is to come. With such phrases as “prepare our hearts” and eventually “comequickly” we call on the Lord to guide us during these days.

Also found are the daily readings with very brief reflections and petitions to includewhat is most personal in our lives.

We will never have all the time we wish but the truth is God gives all the time weneed. The question is how we spend it. There seems to be even more competition thannormal for our time this month, but listen to the Lord in the midst of it all and there willbe no doubt that was time well spent.

Understanding My Value to My Church . . .By Laura G. Humphries, CT

Parish Life & Stewardship Coordinator

A good friend of mine recently read this story to me from an email while we were outwalking and I want to share the message with you. Several years ago, a woman and herhusband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband’s employer’s home. Arlene, thewife, was nervous about the weekend because the boss was very wealthy, with a fine home onthe waterway, and cars costing more than her house. The first day and evening went well, andArlene was delighted to see how the very wealthy live. The husband’s employer was quitegenerous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew this was a rareopportunity and was enjoying herself immensely.

The boss took them to dinner on one of the evenings and as they were about to enter anexclusive restaurant, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stoppedsuddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment… Arlene wondered if shewas supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened pennythat someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down andpicked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found agreat treasure. Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up? Throughout dinner, theentire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She casually mentioned thather daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been ofsome value.

A smile crept across the man’s face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and heldit out for her to see. “Look at it.” He said. “Read what it says.” She read the words “UnitedStates of America.” “No, not that; read further.” “One cent?” “No, keep reading.” “In Godwe Trust?” “Yes!” “And?” “And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin.Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, butwe never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him?Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at thatmoment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, atleast, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God’s way of starting a conversation with me.Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!”

Arlene was out shopping the next week and found a penny on the sidewalk. She stoppedand picked it up, and realized that what she had been worrying and fretting about were thingsshe could not change. She read the words, ‘In God We Trust,’ and had to laugh. She said toherself “Yes, God, I get the message.”

Trusting in God requires faith, strong faith. You have to work at it, you have to live it; likeStewardship, and it must be a way of life. If we trust in God that he will take care of us and giveus what we need our lives will be so much easier; the hard part is surrendering our wants toGod’s will. He provides little reminders of his love and care like the pennies in this story; wejust have to open our eyes to them.

Buildings & Grounds Update

This past summer Holy Souls took part in the Entergy Arkansas Commercial & In-dustrial Prescriptive Program for implementing energy-efficient lighting upgrades. TheSchool and the Allen Center were re-lamped and our participation in this program awardedour parish an incentive check in the amount of $27,351.74. The total upgrade cost was$47,000.

The Commercial & Industrial Prescriptive Program helps businesses save energy andmoney by providing no- and/or low-cost facility improvement recommendations andfinancial incentives based on the total amount of energy the equipment will save. Thelighting upgrades at Our Lady of the Holy Souls Catholic Church and School will savenearly 182,345 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, equivalent of removing the car-bon emissions by planting 3,299 tree seedlings, according to the Environmental Protec-tion Agency.

“Basically, it’s an incentive to get our customers to reduce the amount of power theyuse,” said Entergy Customer Service Manager Mark Hunt. “When our customers aremore efficient, they are more profitable; this helps Entergy Arkansas because it lowersour peak demand, mitigating our need to build additional power plants and associatedenergy infrastructure.”

On Friday, September 6th at the school assembly held on the playground the awardpresentation of the incentive check from Entergy took place.

It is interesting to note that Harvey Couch, the founder of the electrical companyknown today as Entergy, has had many descendants that were and still are parishionersat Holy Souls. Mary Bea Hiegel who is a current, active member, as well as her mother,Bea (Mrs. Harvey Couch, Jr.) who gave many hours to the parish before her death in1995. Harvey Couch, had many descendants that attended Holy Souls School. Thisincluded five grandchildren, (the children of his second son, Harvey Couch, Jr. and wifeBea), fourteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Those currently attendingare Jennifer Mines, seventh grader and Amelia Byers, kindergartener.

Harvey Couch’s visionin the early 1900 to bringelectricity to Arkansas washighlighted in the 1927Forbes Magazine this way:“To the people of Arkansas, however, this means muchmore than that a prosperousindustry has arisen in thestate. It means that thewhole state is entering a newera. Everybody is interestedin the success of such an en-terprise, for it can succeedonly through endowing thepeople in the cities, townsand farms with power, andas the people are endowedwith power, human life

takes on new meaning.”*Just as Harvey Couch entered Arkansas into a new era in bringing electricity to our

state, we here at Holy Souls have entered a new era of becoming an energy efficientparish. In tracking our electrical costs since the completing of the re-lamping in August,we have seen a savings of $4,475. (Keeping in mind the seasonal temperature differenceof the same time period of 2012).

In 2014 Holy Souls will again participate in the Entergy incentive program to re-lampthe exterior lighting on campus and the lighting in the church; also in 2014 the followingprojects will be undertaken: The sidewalk and lawn area along the Allen Center and “I”Street will be upgraded to prevent further erosion. The school building’s rusting metalwindow trim will be cleaned and painted. The Eucharistic Chapel will be remodeled tobecome our Our Lady of Holy Souls Chapel.

Please remember to place your gift in the yellow Building Fund envelope to make itpossible to complete these upgrades for our Parish.

Special “Thank You” to the students of Mount Saint Mary’s for their help on MercyDay. The students tackled major cleaning projects in the Church and Parish Hall. The girlsalso helped out in the classrooms at the school. Their gift of time was so appreciated.

The Seniors Gorup Travels to Paris

On Sunday, August 25th, 34 of the seniors attended the Birthright benefit at Murry’sDinner Playhouse to see “South Pacific”. As always, it was a fun evening and we like tosupport Birthright with our presence and an ad in the program that lists our membersthat died during the past year. At our December meeting and Christmas party we willbring baby gifts or monetary gifts for Birthright and Diane Hoelzeman will deliver thesegifts.

After our September meeting we played Bingo and a few of the members got achance to feel lucky.

For our Oktoberfest, Elvis joined us (Provided by Little Rock Funeral Home). Heentertained us with songs he made popular over the years. The songs brought smiles toour faces, some toe-tapping, and a few were singing along. After the entertainment, alunch was served of pulled pork, beans and slaw from Corky’s. Two of our memberssupplied the snack to go with our beer and wine and the dessert after lunch.

On October 28th, 48 members took a bus trip to Mt. Magazine which Ann Hoffmanhad so graciously organized. We felt blessed that on this fall trip we got to see somecolorful leaves. Near the top of the mountain the colors were bright yellow, orange andred. We had a delicious dinner and time to sight-see before heading to Paris.

At Paris, we visited Cowie Wine Cellars. Bob Cowie, a deacon in our diocese, isthe owner and was our host for the tour. Bob has taken a small school house andtransformed it into a unique chapel with monastic-stalls, an altar, stained glass and acrucifix (by George Hoelzeman who did work here at Holy Souls). Bob also collectsbells. Two of them date back to the 1680’s. As he showed us the bells and told theirhistory, he would also tap them to let us hear the different tone each had. We soonfound our way into the winery where we were able to taste and buy some of his wineand to tour the small museum that documents the formation of the winery. About 3p.m., we boarded the bus to head home only to have to get off-the bus because it couldn’t

THE LAST MONK OF THE TIBHIRINE AND OF GOD’S AND MEN

The Last Monk of the Tibhirine is a profoundly moving account of the 1996 brutal attack ona group of Cistercian monks in Algeria. Author Freddy Derwahl writes the testimony of the lastsurviving brother, Br. Jean-Pierre. The monks were kidnapped and killed in Algeria in March of

(continued on Page 12)SENIORS GROUP

1996, Br. Jean-Pierre was able to escape that night and today helives a life of prayer, unconditional love and welcome. Thispowerful book recalls lost friends and brothers, and their doubts, through enlightening and illuminating interviews with Br. Jean-Pierre. The book was made into a very dramatic movie Of Godsand Men which we will show on Friday, February 7 beginning at6pm in the Parish Hall. Refreshments will be provided. The booksare for sale in the church office for $14.00 they normally retail for$19.95. After the movie we will have time for discussion about thispowerful true story of 20th century martyrdom, faith and survival. We hope the showing and discussion of the film will help you toprepare for the upcoming Lenten season.

One review of the book states “The Last Monk of Tibhirine isa story of a truly humble man. Jean-Pierre Schumacher lived alongside the seven Trappistmonks who were killed during the Algerian Civil War—men who witnessed to the grace andpeace of Jesus Christ not only through their deaths, but also through their lives. In addition toproviding an insider’s look at the story of the Tibhirine martyrs, Jean-Pierre’s story is a reminderthat we are all called to a life of Christ like love.” –Carl McColman, author of The Big Book ofChristian Mysticism and The Lion, the Mouse and the Dawn Treader.

By Denise Morbit, Director of Youth Ministry

The Sr. High CYM year began with an awesome leadership team retreat! Theteam – Shelby Davidson, Clair Green, Jacob Hopkins, Sarah Hylton, Aaron IzaguirreDusek, Emily Odom, Zachary Petrey, LilianePoirot, Sophie Rudder, and Scottie Taylorcommitted to serve this year and plan and leadCYM events. After our retreat dinner, the teamwas surprised and shared a few hours at the LittleRock Climbing Center team building as wechallenged ourselves and each other. We thenworked through the night back at the BenedictHouse planning the year’s major events andscheduling the fall. We finished the next morningafter our BH lock-in and got out a huge mailing for (hopefully) all the registered highschool members of Holy Souls. CYM began on Wednesday, September 11 when we welcomed new and returningteens. The leadership had some fun icebreaker games, and our wonderful Men’s Clubgrilled delicious hamburgers. We meet most every Wednesday night, and our meetingshave included teen witness/sharing talks, Scripture nights, personal development anddiscovering who God is calling us to be as well talks by Fr. Erik on Pope Francis’ “New

Leadership Retreat

Evangelization” and Fr.Tom’s on the 10 Command-ments. One night we hadgym night and played dodgeball. And the Halloweenparty featured some greatcostumes and fun games andgood prizes.

One Sunday a monthwe celebrate the 5:30 p.m.Mass together and follow up(or begin sometimes) with anactivity. The kids had ascavenger hunt inSeptember, movie night inOctober, and we raked a fewyards before Mass inNovember.

Several youth attendedthe Senior High Youth Rallyin October at Catholic HighSchool. The YAC leaderswith the Diocese spendhours preparing and leadingthese events. Proudly, our

parish has three members serving: MaryCate Connell, Shelby Davidson, and AugieGentry. We camped at lovely Mt. Nebo inOctober. Thanks to Angelika Faull, EllieFaull, Jan Sponer, Debbie Poirot, and JohnnyMorbit, we survived the cold, rain, a sprain, and lost keys to enjoy one of Arkansas’beautiful state parks as well as each other’scompany. Instead of going to Mass in thearea, we all met back at Holy Souls for 5:30p.m. – there’s no place like the home parish!

Jr. High CYM year began with thenaming of our JYAT leadership team: Austin Anger, Karina Brockwell, CarolineDavis, Katelyn McKinney, Breanna Racher,Carol Stover, and Dalton Thompson. Ourfirst event was an “Open Night at theBenedict House” after a Catholic Highhome game. The kids had a blast from 9-11 p.m. playing games, hanging out withtheir friends, having some snacks, and goingto and from the gym. Our meetings are onFridays, usually once a month after school. In October we had a faith discussionfollowed by pizza and then fun time. November’s meeting began with prayer andpizza and then raking three nearbyparishioner yards. The Diocese’s Jr. High Spectacularbrought a wonderful speaker to the kids –Mr. Mike Patin from Louisiana. Over 450youth from our state participated, including13 from Holy Souls. The kids really enjoyedMike’s sense of humor as well as the lifelessons he stressed. We ended the day with

CYM Camping Trip to Mt. Nebo

Jr. High Youth Rally

Lunch with Holy Souls CYMers at MSMMass. A few times a month during school lunch, the kids and I have a Scripture study at theBenedict House. It’s always a great turnout – very encouraging that they are not onlyhungry for lunch, but for God’s Word as well!

We are planning a full day of service during the Christmas break for Monday,December 30. And the leadership team is putting together their ideas for an overnightRetreat Lock-In for the winter. Of course, volunteer adults are needed (begged!). It’ll bea great time. Evangelizing the youth has many levels. I appreciate all the youth – those whoinspire me with their tremendous faith convictions, those who are really trying to developa faith life, and the challenges of those who really don’t know God or even care to knowHim through His beautiful Church. Please pray that Our Lord continues to guide mespiritually and be what He’s calling me to be for all our youth, no matter where they are ontheir own faith journey.

Merry Christmas from CYM!

He will bring with him over 150 relics, some as old as 2000 years. Amongthe treasures will be relics of St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux (the “Little Flower”), St. Francis ofAssisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Faustina Kowalska. In addition, there will also bepresent a portion of the veil of Our Lady, as well as one of the largest remaining pieces of the True Cross inthe world. Those in attendance will be able to examine and venerate each relic. In the Church’s historymany miracles and healings have been worked in the presence of relics, and many have been healedthrough this ministry. Please do not miss this opportunity.
