SENIOR PARK AID – INTERPRETATION

Natural Bridges State Beach

This uniformed position works under the supervision and direction of the District Interpreter III and

the general direction of the Natural Bridges State Beach Park Interpreter I and is responsible for

assisting with the interpretive programing at Natural Bridges. Natural Bridges which is home to tide

pools and one of the largest over wintering sites of Monarch butterflies in the Western United States.

Volunteer Coordination, hosting visitor center, conducting interpretive programs, coordinating the

tour system and assisting with special events are major duties of the position.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

45% INTERPRETATION

Promote high quality educational experiences for the public by researching, developing and

conducting natural, cultural and historic interpretive programs. These include tours, nature

walks, demonstrations, training for volunteers, roving interpretation and outreach

presentations.

45% ADMINISTRATION

Assist docent coordinator at Natural Bridges State Parks with recruiting, scheduling, training,

monitoring and retaining volunteers. Arrange field trips with educators and planning events

and school group programming logistics are duties of this position

10% MAINTENANCE

Maintain a clean and orderly visitor center, museum and bookstore including exhibits, museum rooms and offices and employee restrooms. This includes the care of artifacts, as well as assisting with the care and maintenance of the landscape at the park. Maintain and care for butterfly garden and demonstration milkweed garden.

Seasonal Interpretive Specialist

Location: Natural Bridges State Park

Pay Rate: $12.90-14.26 per hour

Hours: This is a seasonal position that can work up to1500 hours per year (3/4 time).

Applicant must be available to work weekends and holidays.

Start Date: August 1, 2018 and Labor Day

Duties: This position will be responsible for assisting with all aspects of the

interpretive programs, including: creating, scheduling, advertising, and implementing

monthly programs for visitors. This person is also responsible for assisting with the

school group program coordination at Natural Bridges State Park. This person will

work alongside the Interpreter I to coordinate the guided butterfly and tidepool walk

programs by scheduling docents, leading tours, and assisting as needed. Estimated

60% office work, 40% field work. This position will work under the supervision of the

District Interpreter III and the general direction of the Natural Bridges State Beach

Park Interpreter I within the visitor center.

Qualifications: A minimum of one-year experience in any one of the following:

coordinating park, education, recreation, or volunteer programs; working with K-12

schools; conducting at least 1000 hours working in park operations in a class

equivalent in responsibility to a State Park Aid.

Must be enthusiastic, organized, responsible, appreciate the outdoors, and enjoy

working with children and adults. Applicant should be able to communicate well, be

flexible and work as a positive part of a team. Ideal candidates will be outgoing and

comfortable working with a diverse group of volunteers and the public. Knowledge of

California’s natural and cultural history, proficiency in word processing, and familiarity

with Publisher, Google calendar and documents, Adobe software is desired.
