Park perfect for people and pooches Hundreds of dogs and their humans – more than 1,000 people – braved the changeable weather at Bark in the Park last Sunday 6 May, to celebrate the opening of the enclosed Harmony Fields Dog Park in Maddington. Everyone was there, from chihuahuas to great danes and everything in between, working breeds, lap dogs, cuddly mutts and more. Bark in the Park featured stalls brimming with pet products, free vet checks, a puppy photo booth, face painting, ‘meet and greet’ with the City’s Rangers, plenty of space to play and new friends to meet and sniff. Cookie, a two-year-old Japanese Spitz, won the People’s Pooch competition. She received a hamper of dog goodies for the most ‘likes’ on the City’s Programs and Events Facebook page. The Harmony Fields Dog Park is the first off-leash dog exercise area in the City of Gosnells that is enclosed, featuring one fenced off area for large dogs and one for small dogs. It includes a 1.8m-high perimeter fence, a dual gate entry system, agility features, watering points, shade and different surfaces. Dog owners are reminded that when out and about, dogs can only be let off-leash in designated dog exercise areas and must remain under control at all times. This means they must come when called and not be a nuisance to other people, pets or wildlife. For more details about designated dog areas, visit the City’s website. Dowitcher Loop Reserve, Gosnells Construction of this $515,000 rail-themed park is almost complete. The community will soon be able to enjoy state-of-the-art play equipment, shade and seating areas, path network and more than 2,000m 2 of turf, perfect for casual ball sports. The project is part of the City’s Public Open Space Strategy to improve parks and reserves across the region and will be a welcome addition to the community. The much-needed park space was already in planning when a young resident petitioned the City for a new playground. City facilities go green with solar Solar panels have recently been installed at the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre and Leisure World, both in Thornlie, to improve energy efficiency and reduce the City’s carbon footprint. There also plans to install solar panels at the Agonis building and improve the current system at the City’s Civic Centre. Combined, these systems, will save tens of thousands in power costs. Rewards for residents Switch your thinking has negotiated discounts on solar panels, batteries, pool covers and more for local residents. There are discounts on a range of green products including solar panels, solar batteries, rainwater tanks, energy saving driver for pool pumps, pool covers, composters, worm farms and bokashi buckets, keep cups, insulating paint and soil improvers. Maddington Kenwick Strategic Employment Area (MKSEA) progress The development of MKSEA is entering a new phase as the City considers infrastructure needs for the new industrial area. As part of the project, which aims to boost business and jobs growth, the City has led the process to rezone 670ha of rural land in the City’s north-east to facilitate industrial development. Mayor Glenn Dewhurst said MKSEA was a vital component of the City’s future growth, with the potential to generate more than 30,000 jobs and benefit the local economy to the tune of almost $20 billion. “The City is looking forward to working with State and Federal government agencies to deliver common infrastructure sooner rather than later.” 10 May 2018 Park Play – Science Fun Tuesday 15 May 3pm – 5.30pm Walter Padbury Reserve Family Fun Afternoon Monday 21 May 3pm – 5.30pm Richard Rushton Community Centre A Fine Romance – The Magic of Fred Astaire Friday 18 May 7.30pm – 9.15pm Don Russell Performing Arts Centre Learn to ride – free balance bike sessions for kids Saturday 19 May 10am – noon Mills Park tennis courts Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea Monday 21 May 10am – noon Kenwick Library Young Re-Inventor of the Year Competition to inspire young people to re-think waste.
