The magazines cater to the high end luxury product lines and services reaching an affluent audience and readers, who have the ability to buy most anything. The magazine’s editorial content features the “who’s who” and those people having the most impact on the community, along with covering the social scene, galas and events where many of those same people gather. The magazines are delivered by direct mail monthly to over 40,000 homes valued in the millions of dollars. They are also being distributed throughout the city at strategic locations, such as Town Centers, Country Clubs, Athletic Clubs and the Resorts & Spas, along with our advertising partners in the city.

VALETINE’S DAY – BCS CHAMPIONS – FREEDOM CLIMB

February is for lovers, and the one day to celebrate with your signifi cant other is going to be February 14 – Valentine’s Day! Flowers, jewelry, chocolates or dinner are some of the usual ways to show how much you care. This year, maybe we can look for some unusual ways to celebrate our feelings? One way may be to look up the variety of ways the day is commemorated around the world. In doing my own research, I found this website - www.stvalentinesday.org. I was intrigued to fi nd how many different ways there are to reaffi rm ones love. Additionally, the progression of the festival through time was also enlightening. So, however or wherever you choose to observe the occasion, I wish you and yours a memorable time.

Speaking of memories, our cover story is about some local residents who will share their revelations on how they met and fell in love. One couple met on a blind date, another on the job, and one even found each other on J-Date, a Jewish dating website. Their stories are interesting and heartwarming. I trust you will reminisce back on how the one you are with fi rst touched your heart. As for Candy and I, it was a long, long time ago, and she played hard to get. In the end, well, I got my girl.

The BCS Championship game was in South Florida and brought in a large economic boost to the area. Unfortunately, this may be the last time we see the event here in our backyard, unless we’re selected

again by some stroke of luck. With other cities building new mega-stadiums, the competition is pretty tough for the highly coveted title game.

Still, the Crimson Tide rolled to its third championship in four years. The Alabama team is showing they are a dynasty to be reckoned with for some time. As for the Fighting Irish, they can be proud of their accomplishment of making it the championship game for the fi rst time in twenty years. Not one preseason poll had Notre Dame fi nishing anywhere close to a BCS title. Congratulations to both programs. Maybe a team from the State of Florida will be there next year?

I’d like to give a shout-out to two ordinary women who accomplish some extraordinary feats as well. Tina Yeager and Jen Klaassens will climb one of the highest mountains in the world to promote a project which brings freedom to women. The Freedom Climb is a symbolic gesture of the struggle for freedom they face every day. From April 9 to 25, 44 women from all over the world will meet in Nepal and trek to the base camp of Mt. Everest and then

summit the neighbouring peak of Kala Phattar. When the climbers stand at the top of Kala Phattar, they will be declaring life and freedom for those who cannot speak for themselves. w w w. T h e F r e e d o m C l i m b . n e t . Godspeed to Jen & Tina. You are both remarkable!

Lastly, Lifestyle Publications knows how seriously our readers value their health. Healthcare has never played a more prevalent role in today’s society. We have formed an exclusive partnership with Holy Cross Hospital, to bring you face to face with some of the leading specialists who can inform, educate, and shine a light on the best preventative measures and latest treatments available. The fi rst seminar will be taking place this February and you can read about it in this issue.

I wish you a Great February and a Happy Valentine’s Day!

As Always, Enjoy the Lifestyle™

Does anything sound more unromantic – and more dangerous to your health – than telling your signifi cant other: “Honey, I bought you a vacuum cleaner as a Valentine’s Day gift”?

Except if it’s this vaccuum cleaner. The Special Edition Swarovski HYLA GST was recently declared

the World’s Most Expensive Vacuum Cleaner by the Guinness World Records. It features 32,000 black, gray, and white Swarovski crystals that took 100 hours of labor to hand-place. Retail price: $21,900.

While three have been sold so far – one in Russia and two in Dubai – only one remains. And it’s in Hartmut Gassmann’s offi ces in Deerfi eld Beach. That’s where the Parkland resident operates the national headquarters for HYLA U.S. Gassmann.

“It’s not so much for selling,” Gassman concedes. “People don’t spend $21,900 for a cleaning system.”

But they do spend 10 percent of that. Gassman is the national distributor for a high-end machine that traps dirt and allergens with water instead of fi lters. It even comes with a TV-like remote control.

“We did this for marketing,” Gassman says. “It’s a conversation piece.”

It’s also a conversation piece for Gassman’s 11-year-old daughter Yasmine – that’s her posing with the world record-holder.

KIM L. CAVENDISH, the president and CEO of downtown Fort Lauderdale’s Museum of Discovery and Science, is now chairwoman of something called the Giant Screen Cinema Association – whose mission is “advance the business of producing and presenting educational giant screen and immersive cinema experiences globally.” Since MODS has a popular IMAX theater, Cavendish seems quite qualifi ed. Even more impressive: She’s the fi rst woman to chair GSCA.

Students aren’t the only ones who receive grades. So do their schools. Last month, the Florida Department of Education released its 2011-2012 high school grade results – and 82 of BROWARD’S HIGH SCHOOLS earned an ‘A’ or ‘B’ – compared to 76.3 the year before. All the county’s charter high schools earned a C or higher. Best of all, no Broward high schools received a ‘D’ or ‘F’. Grades were based on,among other things, graduation rates, participation and success in accelerated courses, and postsecondary prep.

Facebook is often criticized for ruining your productivity. But one company has made it profi tbale for local charities. SETNOR BYER INSURANCE & RISK, based in Plantation, decided to donate $5,000 to the charity that garnered the most votes on their Facebook page. Response was so overwhelming, the fi rm doubled down – donating $10,000. Half went to Voices for Children (more than 150 votes), while Hispanic Unity got $2,000 (more than 120 votes) and $3,000 was split among other charities.

MARK ADLER is the new executive director at Broward Meals on Wheels, succeeding Peggy Miller, who held the post since 2006. The private not-for-profit organization has, since 1985, provided millions of meals and many thousands of hours of nutrition education and in-home assessments in Broward County.

Former Miami Dolphin Jason Taylor is now an NFL analyst on ESPN, but he still enjoys smashing his opponents – except now he does it with a ping pong paddle. For the ninth year, Taylor’s foundation hosted JT’S PING-PONG SMASH. In December, his celebrity doubles table-tennis tournament was held at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood and attracted a slew of current Dolphins players (Brian Hartline, Karlos Dansby, Brandon Fields, and Anthony Fasano, among others) as well as other sports stars. They raised a total of $40,000 for Taylor’s foundation. Pictured above: Taylor with John Duffy, CEO of 3Cinternative, the title sponsor of this year’s Smash. www.jasontaylorfoundation.com

If you’ve always imagined classical music as staid, tuxedo-clad violinists playing music by long-dead coposer, The Symphony of the Americas is determined to change your mind. To celebrate its 25th concert season this year, SOTA LAUNCHED 25 DAYS OF MUSIC. Throughout January, it presented a variety of musical and social events, but our favorites were the “fl ash mobs.” A fl ash mob is defi end by Wikipedia as “a group of people who assemble suddenly in

a public place, perform an unusual and seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then quickly disperse.” But SOTA made th econcept both classy and clasical – by assembling its musicians in streetclothes to perfrm unannounced on the streets of Broward County. Pictured above: a fl ash mob at the Las Olas Art Fair last month. Check back here in the upcoming months for other intriguing events from SOTA. www.sota.org

Being a personal fi tness trainer for 15 years has taught me one thing about people: They really don’t want to work out. So whenever someone wants to exercise, regardless of he time of day, I encourage it. But in my experience, there are better times of the day to lace up those cross-trainers than others.

I fi rmly believe that that body is trainable and will adapt if you give six weeks in a new regime. The same also applies for the way that we eat.

If you intend to completely change the way you look and feel, it comes at the price of a commitment! That may mean getting up an hour earlier each morning or sacrifi cing something else that you would have rather done for working out. It means ordering the fruit for dessert over the chocolate decadence. Remember nothing tastes as good as being in shape feels!

MORNINGLet’s assume the morning workout is a possibility for

you. I’ve had many clients who trained before sunrise…just saying. The fi rst feeling we want to start our day? Gpod energy and circulation. How many times have you woken up feeling like you were in a car accident? That lack of circulation causes infl ammation. The cure is increasing blood fl ow through exercise. So now we have worked out,

we feel better physically and mentally – and next we are hungry from the workout.

What does hunger mean? It means our metabolism is jump-started and the fat-burning is underway. We have a clear head and we feel great about ourselves. Time to eat. We’re more likely to make a good choice because we feel good and don’t want to ruin that feeling. Then one good choice turns into another – and then we end up having a good day.

NIGHTSNighttime is crucial to keeping the eating habits under

control. A lot of us are night owls and go to bed too late after sitting around the house picking on the wrong food for a variety of reasons. Well, because we got up an hour earlier and exercised, we’re now going to crash earlier and avoid that extra hour of possible nighttime emotional eating.

Working out at night isn’t bad but just keep in mind that we usually get really hungry after workouts and now you are getting into those later hours where we want to cut down on our calories. Also, a good workout will sometimes give you a blast of energy that could keep you up later than you want. I have been known to clean my whole house after a good workout.

Tomorrow we start it all over again. Remember it takes 4- 6 weeks to change and develop a new and positive habit, give yourself that time. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] at 954-649-3283.

s kas kaDo you know that over 60% of the visitors to Alaska

each year, do so on a cruise ship? It’s certainly the easiest way to see this vast wonderland, however, it truly only is the tip of the iceberg. At SitInMySeats VIP Tickets, Travel & Concierge Services, the travel specialists are known for tailoring and customizing unique and unforgettable experiences to destinations worldwide. Alaska is no exception. So many people have already experienced cruising and are looking for ways to push their expectations when they fi nally plan their vacation.

“We’re seeing a growing trend in our discerning clients wanting more from their destinations, more from their experiences and certainly, more from our team as we create and personalize each vacation” says Laura Hildenbrandt, Director of Travel.

Recently, the team at SitInMySeats created a journey for a family looking to experience the true Alaska. The clients wanted a “grand journey” and wanted to take in as much of the landscape and

culture as they could in a period of 12 days. The result was an awe-inspiring trek that allowed

the clients to take in the natural beauty, search for Alaska’s famed wildlife and learn the stories behind the sights as they traveled through some of the state’s most stunning wilderness. They visited Chugach National Forest, Kenai Fjords National Park, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and Denali National Park. The wildlife experience was beyond their expectations. During this adventure, they saw marine wildlife such as sea otters, puffi ns, harbor seals, Steller sea lions and whales in Kenai Fjords National Park as they coasted past glaciers on their canoes. They saw countless animals throughout the journey, including caribou, moose, Dall sheep and grizzly bears.

SitInMySeats also customized an amazing “fl ightseeing” trip of Mt. McKinley that the clients said there are “no words to describe”! Throughout this journey, SitInMySeats made sure that their transportation and accommodations were nothing short of luxurious, having their guests stay at amazing places such as Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge, Caribou Lodge and Tutka Bay Lodge.

A trip to Alaska can be done so many different ways but the end result will stay the same.....a vacation and experience that will live on in your dreams and memories forever. For more information on Alaska or any other travel destination, please contact SitInMySeats VIP Tickets, Travel & Concierge Services at 954-456-0419/ 866-798-7328 or email Lisa Crawford at [email protected].

Vince Boccard remembers the fi rst time he met his wife Terry like it was yesterday – although he didn’t ask her out for 10 months.

He was working for the family business, Boccard Homes and Kessler Construction, at a condo complex called Bayside Towers in Miami. Across the street was a bagel shop called Bagels and Co.

“I would go to work at 7:30 every morning, but we couldn’t start till 9, so I’d go there and have a cup of coffee and a bagel,” Boccard says. He went there regularly, so he recognized all the staff.

“I said to my business partner, ‘Hey, they’ve got a new girl working here, she’s pretty hot-looking. I’m going to get to know her,’” he remembers. “We sat at her station, and I asked if she could help us.’”

He saw her several times after that and, while interested, never asked her out. He says everybody was hitting on her and he “waited to see what happens.” Terry says – after knowing him now for 20 years – how unusual that was for him.

“I knew he liked me, but he didn’t ask. He was kind of shy,” Terry says. “He’s such a people person, and now that I know him I think, ‘Why did it take you so long!’”

She had just moved to Florida from Erie, Pennsylvania, and she hadn’t dated anyone down here. Finally, months later, a friend of hers approached Vince in the bagel shop.

“One afternoon for lunch, her girlfriend comes up and says ‘Why don’t you go out with her? She’d really like to go out with you,’” Vince recalls. “So I walked right up and asked.” Their fi rst date was on Terry’s birthday, Nov. 13, in 1993.

“We went to Mango’s [in Fort Lauderdale] and we really enjoyed each other,” Terry says. “Right from the beginning, he was a good role

model and father to my two boys.” (They also now have a young daughter together.)

“She was a country bumpkin and at the time, I was driving a Porsche – and she didn’t know what a Porsche was,” Vince says. “I said. ‘This is my kind of girl.’”

Shortly after that date, Vince moved to Deerfi eld from Miami. She lived in North Miami, so they mostly spent time together on weekends. Sometimes they’d go down to the Keys together.

“My sister was a breast cancer survivor and would use Key West as a retreat,” says Vince. It became a family thing, and then the couple’s go-to spot. “Once or twice a month, we would go down for a long weekend.”

“We took our time and had so much fun, we didn’t rush into a marriage,” Terry says. But that’s where Vince eventually proposed.

“We used to go down to Key West for the St. Patty’s Day bar stroll, and my cousin had just got married and we just kind of all went as a group,” she says.

Vince was leading them down Duval Street, pretending they were just sightseeing. They went down to the southernmost point in the continental U.S., marked by a buoy a block west of where Duval Street ends.

“We were hanging out by the buoy, and I turned to her and got down on my knee and opened up the ring box,” he says. Terry wasn’t expecting it at all. “She didn’t answer, she looked in a daze, like, ‘Really?’”

“The other people are going, ‘Oh my God, say yes! Yes! Yes!’ She fi nally said yes and we celebrated the whole night,” Vince says.

“I knew I wanted to be married one day, but it wasn’t an issue that I wanted to be married right then,” Terry says. “But I felt I already was married after six years.”

She says they still try to get away to go boating in the Keys on their anniversary. Feb. 20 will mark their 13th year of marriage.

From Bagels to a BuoyBy Brandon Ballenger

Here to helpPublic service has always been part of Vince Boccard’s life. His father was commissioner, then mayor, in his hometown of El Portal in Miami-Dade.

“I learned it from my parents. I ran for city commission in 1983, and I was re-elected four times serving eight years,” Boccard says.

When Vince and his wife moved to Coral Springs for the kids in 1997, he jumped right back in, volunteering for city boards and committees. In 2006, he won a city commission seat, and after seven years of serving there, decided to run for mayor last year.

“I felt I had the experience for that now, and I won,” he says. “I’m looking at possibly running for Broward County commissioner in 2016.”

“When we fi rst me he always told me he’s going to be on my driver’s license one day as governor,” says his wife, Terry, who works on several programs and committees, including the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund the couple started in 2003. “He’s always had big dreams of being involved.”

Vicki and Jason Strochak met on JDate.com, a Jewish dating service, back in April 2003. “I had been on the site for a while, with no luck at all,” Vicki recalls.

Jason? He met Vicki on his very fi rst attempt: “This was the fi rst time I got on the Internet, and she was the one and only date I had.”

After a few messages back and forth, the two agreed to a dinner date at Mark’s on Las Olas. (That high-end restaurant closed in 2010 and was replaced by SoLita.)

“My fi rst impression of her was that she easy-going and beautiful – and she had the perfect temperament to put up with me,” Jason says. As for Vicki’s fi rst impression, she says jason was “very nice, polite, put-together and funny.” And the date went great…

“Until the end.”After a nice meal and some wine, the pair

decided to take a stroll down Las Olas. It was early evening on a Sunday night. They walked and chatted, checked out a water taxi, and lost track of time. And when they came back to the restaurant, the lights were off and everybody was gone.

“When we got back, it turned out that the valet and restaurant were closed – and all the keys were locked up inside,” Vicki says. “And Jason had valeted his car.”

So she gave him a ride home. But of course, his house keys were with his car keys.

“I had to keep my cool and make it seem like it didn’t bother me,” Jason says. Vicki recalls him walking around his house, trying every door. He knocked on a neighbor’s door, but no one answered. Then, she says, “He proceeded to throw rocks at his neighbor’s window.”

“My buddy Charlie came down and let me in his house,” he remembers. He went to work the next morning in the same rumpled clothes, but since he was the owner, it was no big deal. “People thought the date went real well,” he says.

Later, he walked over to Mark’s to get his keys back. “I tried to get a free dessert out of it, but they said no. Probably why they’re out of business,” he jokes.

Jason called Vicki and set up a second date the next day. He was late.

“I thought he stood me up, but he was at a business dinner that ran very late,” Vicki says. The third date was a concert – which was cancelled.

“We went to see Matchbox 20, and the drummer comes out and says [singer Rob Thomas] got laryngitis,” Jason says. “We just went out to a bar somewhere. We had these obstacles, but it worked out, and there wasn’t any drama.”

Jasn proposed to Vicki in Aruba, and it went off without a hitch. In his toast speech at the wedding, the best man revealed why Jason had never gotten any other dates through JDate: he’d sabotaged Jason’s profi le a few weeks into their relationship while Jason slept over one night.

Recalls Jason: “Where it says, ‘What’s your ideal fi rst date?’ he changed it to ‘Hooters and then a strip club.’ And for profession, he wrote like something like circus clown. And he put profi le pictures of weird-looking guys with their shirts off. So I never got any other responses.”

But instead of hurting their budding relationship, like every other little misfortune along the way, the prank helped cement it. Their seventh anniversary will be this June.

Tag, Title, and CharityThe Strochak family owns and operates Florida Auto Tag Management Group, which provides tag and title services (including personalized plates) at several locations across Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Volusia counties. They also run a Groupon-like daily deals website, GottaHalfIt.com.

The couple is also very active with charity work. “It became a bigger part when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997, and after she beat it she devoted her time to help fi nd how to prevent it and get early detection,” Jason Strochak says. They rounded up 15,000 signatures and raised $60,000 in partnership with Susan G. Komen and the Florida Breast Cancer Coalition to create a custom license plate to support the cause. Both Jason and his wife are involved with the Boys & Girls Club, and Vicki has a few other endeavors.

“She has been working for the Reach for the Stars Foundation which helps people with cystic fi brosis, and she’s also president of the PTA organization of the [Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El] school,” Strochak says.

Jacque and Neil Scherfer met on a double date – but not with each other. And it wasn’t love at fi rst sight.

Neil remembers, “A good friend of mine was going out with her, and he needed

someone to help him out” – because Jacque wanted to set up one of her friends. So they all saw a movie together.

Jacque says “the relationship didn’t go anywhere after a few dates,” but the four stayed friends over the next few years.

Neil and Jacque became gradually closer even as they were attending college 1,400 miles apart. Neil was working on a degree in media management at Arizona State, while Jacque was at Tennessee State for nursing.

“We stayed in touch through college and hung out during spring break, summer break, stuff like that,” Neil says. About a year before Jacque graduated, they started dating.

Neil says the long-distance relationship was “tough, but we saw each other enough to deal with it.” They racked up a huge phone bill for Jacque’s parents.

Fast forward another six months. Neil had graduated, returned to South Florida for work, and was moving out of his apartment. Jacque was on spring break and helped him pack.

“He had me going through all these boxes trying to fi nd things,” Jacque says. “I thought I was going to open a box and fi nd the ring.” Nope.

“I don’t know why I thought that – way too many movies I guess,” she says. Although she was aggravated, she brushed it off when Neil asked her was wrong.

A few days later, just before she had to go back to school, Neil said he had to meet some clients and wanted her to come.

“We had tickets to the Heat game and were going out to dinner, and we were supposed meet clients of his,” Jacque says. He showed up a little late, acting obnoxious and short-tempered. He didn’t say two words to her parents. They took off in a rush, and as fate would have it, got pulled over by police just a couple minutes later.

“Of course, I was aggravated and thinking he deserved this ticket,” she says.

As the cop was approaching the car, Neil asked, “Should I mention that my father’s with the BSO?” She shook her head. Neil rolled down the window.

License and registration, the cop said. Let me get it, Neil said. “And by the way, do you know my father Rusty?” Jacque pinched his leg.

The cop didn’t care who Neil’s father was and needed to see the registration. Jacque thought the cop was being “kind of a jerk.” Neil handed it over.

He went back to his car and came back after a couple minutes. He said there was something wrong with Neil’s license and the car didn’t belong to him.

“It’s a company car,” Neil said. You can’t drive it, the cop said. “And then he said, ‘Well, I’m going to be nice. Do you live around here? Are you married?,” according to Neil. If he was married, his wife could drive the car home. “I’m practically married,” Neil said.

That’s how he remembers the moment. Jacque’s version is a little different.

“He goes, ‘Well [Neil] can’t drive this car. Are you a family member or a wife? And I said I could be his wife with all the shit I put up with,” Jacque says.

They agree on what happened next: Neil pulled out a little box and asked, “Will you be my wife?”

“She’s like, ‘What the hell?’ – and it didn’t register,” Neil remembers. “I got out and was high-fi ving my buddy and she realized, ‘He’s serious.’”

“I said, ‘Well, you’re an asshole,’” Jacque remembers. And then she said yes.

The cop – he really was one, and he did work with Rusty Scherer – hugged Neil and took off.

He convinced her they were already running too late to meet the clients. “Let’s forget the game and just go to Nick’s on South Beach and have a great dinner,” Neil said.

“We walk into the restaurant, and I end up seeing all my family and his family and friends,” Jacque says, prompting a genuinely confused question. “What are you all doing eating here?”

“She still didn’t click,” Neil says. He had spent three months planning the whole thing with his dad and friends, down to ignoring Jacque’s parents to get her riled up. All except for being late and stressed – that was real. The car got a fl at on the way to get her, and he was panicked that timing wit his cop pal had been ruined.

That’s the TicketBy Brandon Ballenger

Nursing at HomeBest Care was established in 1980 to provide home healthcare and help clients maintain their quality of life. It still does that today, although under different leadership.

“It’s a family-owned company.,” Jacque Scherfer says. “My mother and her business partner [Alan Spector] started it 33 years ago,” Now it’s run by the founders’ kids: Scherfer and Marc Spector.

The business helps match clients with caregivers at home, in hospitals, or in nursing homes. Services range from baby nurses to post-surgical care to live-in nurse aides and companions who can help with tasks like dressing and bathing.

Scherfer’s husband, Neil, is national account manager at CBS Outdoor, where he sells advertising on billboards and transit from the Palm Beaches to the Florida Keys.

jim clark

Ten days after slamming into a tree in Tennessee, 47-year-old Jim Clark had lost 25 pounds and showed scars running across his ribs.

Page 41: Parkland February 2013

LIFESTYLEMAGAZINEGROUP.COM | FEBRUARY 2013 41

Last July, Jim Clark was on vacation in Tennessee. He’d taken his wife and two children to visit his parents about an hour south of Nashville. Just after sunup on the last day of that vacation , he felt the need to unwind. So he went on a 50-mile bike ride through the mountains.

He never fi nished it.Clark was two weeks away from competing in an Ironman triathlon – a 2.4-mile swim,

a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26-mile run that has killed participants in the past. The 46-year-old Fort Lauderdale entrepreneur had fi nished one before, so a 50-mile bike ride was a leisurely stroll.

But only a few miles before he was back at his parents’ home, he saw a large yellow Labrador in his path. Vlark had been chased by dogs before while riding. It can be scary. But this 80-pound beast just followed him with a wagging tail.

“All right, buddy, you have to go home,” Vlark said. The dog refused. That’s when he saw the red pit bull.

“I remember his eyes,” Clark says. “I remember him looking at me.” The pitbull took off toward them. “With a vengeance,” Clark remembers. The yellow lab scurried toward Clark’s bike, turning the handles 90 degrees. He went

fl ying down the embankment at 25 mph, fl ipping twice before slamming into a tree 10 yards away.

“I just heard cracks,” Clark says. “It wasn’t the tree.”

PAIN: THAT FAMILIAR FEELING

Pain was nothing new for Jim Clark. As a 2-year-old, he was diagnosed with asthma. At 5, he was diagnosed with Legg-Calve-Perthes, a degenerative cartilage disease – he spent two years in a wheelchair.

“I don’t remember ever feeling pity,” Clark recalls. “I was just dealing with it. That certainly does something to your character, I think. Building some tolerance for bad times, it helps you want to strive and do things.”

And strive he did. As an adult, he tore up his ankle while water skiing and his ACL while snow boarding. On his 40th birthday, he injured his back jumping on a trampoline

with his kids. But the pain he felt

after this bike crash was something new.

After hitting into the tree, a delusional Clark began patting the ground, looking, hoping, to wake up from a dream.

“It wasn’t a dream,” he said. “Figured that out in about 20 seconds.”

He didn’t yet know that his shoulder had tears in two ligaments, his hip was cracked, and so were eight ribs.

“My entire left side was just broken,” he says. “I could feel my ribs banging up against each other. It was like Jello.”

Crawling along, he made his way up the embankment. Short of breath, Clark collapsed in a heap, his head in the road, his legs resting on the lane markers.

Twenty minutes passed before a car came and found his bloodied body. Clark couldn’t talk, other than to mutter the word, “Ribs.” While paramedics rushed to the scene, Clark recalled that the pit bull has disappeared, but the yellow lab was still there.

THE WORST ISN’T OVER

At the hospital, X-rays showed eight broken ribs and a punctured lung. Clark said his shoulder hurt. “We’re not worried about soft tissue,” a doctor replied. “We’re worried about you living.”

He was loaded into another ambulance and rushed to an emergency care unit at Vanderbilt University.

His 10-year-old son Kelly arrived and had one question: “Is this my dad? It’s kind of really scary to see. It freaked me out.”

After a week, doctors were nearly ready to release him. His brother Duane was fl ying up to drive him and his family home. On that very day, Clark recalls: Doctor comes in and goes, ‘There’s something we just can’t fi gure out. You have this mass in your lung sac. This gray thing. We don’t know what it is.’”

But it’s near the hear, and he might not survive the surgery. Before he’s wheeled into operating room, Clark writes a letter to his children and stuffs it inside a spiral notebook.

“My entire left side was just broken. I could feel my ribs banging up

against each other. It was like Jello.”

Everything went dark again.“Soon as I woke up,” Clark says, “I knew

it was the worst-case scenario.”Doctors found a mass staph infection

growing on his chest – MRSA, which becomes more resistant to treatment the longer it’s there. They had to screw titanium plates to three of his ribs so they could get the leverage to scrape off the mass.

“Everyone that came in the room,” his brother Duane recalls, “they said he would have a much, much better recovery than anyone else because he kept himself in such good health.”

Still, it was a close call. Clark’s wife Linda recalls, “I couldn’t get upset or cry in front of him, because he was being really strong and if I did that, then he would know, because there were moments we didn’t think things were going to go very well, so I had to kind of hide everything.”

But doctors had reached the infection in time. On Aug. 10, two-and-a-half weeks

In June of 2007, Clark had a biking ac-cident with friends, crashing into A1A’s

pavement. His friends followed his ambu-lance ride and went to tell his wife, Linda.

She wasn’t surprised.

In June of 2004, Clark went surfi ng in Bali, Indonesia. This was the tail end of a 15 foot wave he surged through.

people

after ramming into that tree, Clark was set to go home. When Clark hobbled out of his wife’s car that day,

Kelly remembers, “He looked like he had been in the ocean for a month or so. Just drying out there. It was just scary.”

Or as his brother Duane described it, “He looked like a P.O.W. because he had lost so much weight.”

When Clark got home, he wept. “I try to look for the why, for the reason. I didn’t see

any. There was no white light experience. Heaven’s door didn’t open up and invite me in or shut me out. Nothing like that. I felt like I just needed to calm myself down and get through it.”

Nearly six months after his accident, Clark was back to his day job — “looking for deals” as he calls it. He’s a local entrepreneur who has fl ipped businesses in healthcare for the last 15 years. He was also back to riding his bike.

He wasn’t in perfect health yet, but his wife Linda understood.

“It’s Jimmy, that’s what makes him happy,” she says. “He doesn’t do anything small. And that’s great. But I think he needs to do it in a way that’s safe – especially

when you have a family and you have to be around.”One of his best friends, Mike Bush, the owner of

Pivotal Fitness in Fort Lauderdale says that after doctors told Clark he needed to stay on the couch and gia nweight, Clark snuck into the garage at odd hours to pedal on his stationary bike anyway.

“That’s totally Jimmy’s mentality,” Bush says. “He’s not supposed to run? He’ll run. When he wears out the cartilage, he’ll stop running.”

After a day of fi shing in 2010, Clark settled in with his two sons, Dylan (left) and Kelly (right).

For the past 15 years, Young At Art Museum has hosted the annual Women of Vision Luncheon to celebrate civic and business leaders who have made a difference in the community. This year, during the 16th annual Women of Vision Luncheon on Wednesday, February 6, Young At Art is honoring community activist Nelly Rice as Young At Art Volunteer of the Year and Chantal Nichtawitz of IKEA Sunrise as Young At Art Corporate Partner of the Year. Broward County Commissioner Lois Wexler will serve as honorary chair.

“Both Nelly and Chantal have gone above and beyond with their support of all of our efforts both here in our fabulous new Museum and in years past,” said Mindy Shrago, CEO of Young At Art Museum. “They were an integral part of the team that created unforgettable grand opening events for us as well as volunteering behind the scenes for various programs, special events and fundraising activities.”

Beginning at 11 a.m., guests will enjoy tours of the Museum followed by a luncheon in the Museum’s picturesque courtyard, featuring elegant courses of epicurean delights, from creative hors d’oeuvres and soups to an enticing main entrée and gourmet desserts.

As in years past, the 16th Annual Women of Vision Luncheon will benefit the Museum’s creative and pioneering programs for underserved and at-risk youth,

For Ed Cannatelli, size doesn’t matter. But time sure does. And time has dictated how the second-generation general contractor built his business.

“I’ve been a general contractor my whole life. My dad was a builder, my uncle was,” says 47-year-old Coral Springs resident. After moving to Florida from Connecticut, he started Pompano Beach-based Cannatelli Builders in 2003.

“What was unique about the Florida market was there wasn’t a lot of integrity with the companies in place,” Cannatelli says bluntly. “People would be surprised when I showed up on time.”

That punctuality and honesty ¬– “quality work at a fair price” – earned his business a lot of referrals. Cannatelli would do “a couple little jobs for people I knew,” and then get calls from their family and friends.

Nine years later, Cannatelli Builders is a fully staffed, full-service contractor. “We don’t work out of a truck,” Cannatelli says. “We have offi ces, a fi eld manager, and superintendent. We have weekly job meetings, because clients fi nd it important to be involved.”

And some of those clients have big names: Cannatelli

Getting it Done built the Florida Panthers’ Den of Honor at the BB&T Center, a 5,000-square-foot living history of the team with display cases featuring old jerseys, gear, and memorabilia. (That’s about one-third the size of an NHL rink full of team tributes.)

He’s also wrapping up a $3.5 million project in Lake Worth, building 12 townhomes ranging in size from 1,900 to 2,300 square feet as affordable housing for artists. The project is called Urban Arts Lofts and is funded by a federal grant that the city’s community redevelopment agency is using to buy up and renovate or rebuild foreclosures.

But the company still takes on smaller projects, including residential remodels and additions. They also just fi nished an expansion at Tavalino’s Restaurant in Coral Springs. “We did the bar and entertainment area with alcove-refl ected lighting, a lot of LED lighting, and an all-lit onyx bar that’s curved and lit underneath,” Cannatelli says proudly.

One of the company’s draws these days is being what Cannatelli calls “a one-stop shop kind of deal.” And that goes back to Cannatelli’s focus on time.

“Back during the boom, we had a unique experience where the architects would be so busy, and we would wait an extended period of time – and it would kill the job,” Cannatelli explained. “So we brought somebody in-house to do our own revisions and our own drawings.”

That not only sped up the process, it gave clients more control and fl exibility to make changes.

“We just opened [in late November] a new showroom next to our facility and have our corporate headquarters, interior design, architecture, and general contracting services under one roof,” Cannatelli says. “A client doesn’t have to go out to fi nd all these things: renderings, 3D drawings where you walk through the house, everything’s here.”

Expert advice: How to pick a contractor Here are a few tips Cannatelli gave us for people not familiar with general contractors... Cheaper is not always better. “The biggest mistake people make is price. You get what you pay for. Base it solely on price and you may end up regretting that decision.”

Do due diligence. “Make sure they’re properly insured online [at www.myfl oridalicense.com]. We see contractors who aren’t properly insured – and use somebody else’s license.”

Trust but verify. “Ask for and check the references. Look for a good track record with the city, make sure there’s no violations on the state website.”

David Menten runs Sawgrass Ford, the best-selling Ford dealership in South Florida. That’s no small accomplishment when you consider there 17 Ford dealerships within 50 miles of Weston, where Menten lives.

Sawgrass is one of the bigger Ford dealerships in the country, too – and there are more than 3,300 of those.

“Historically, we’ve been averaging near 800 cars a month, and volume’s kind of settled down to where it’s going to be a while,” Menten says matter-of-factly.

Last year, his dealership sold about 2,600 new cars. (Used sales vary more, he says.) That averages out to somewhere around one car every 95 minutes the doors are open. For comparison, industry analysts at Urban Science predicted the average car dealership would sell 805 vehicles in 2012.

According to Menten, there are at least 300 cars on the lot at any given time, although there can be as many as 1,000 depending on the production cycle. Many of them are trucks.

“Our primary business is trucks, and you’re almost always going to be replacing those if you have a fl eet business or a pickup

Deals on Wheelsor a tow truck you need,” Menten says. “Our best seller has always been the F-series, and we’ve also seen a swing toward smaller fuel-effi cient cars like the C-Max [hybrid] and Focus.”

What makes the business do so well? According to Menten, the location helps – at Sunrise Boulevard and the Sawgrass Expressway, just west of Sawgrass Mills and just east of a bunch of alligators. (Which is featured in the company logo, of course.)

“Part of our success is based on a great location we have out here, and our facility has a full suite of services,” says Menten. The company has 10 separate departments covering consumer and fl eet sales for new and used vehicles, including online, plus fi nancing, parts, accessories, and a body shop.

He also gives credit to the long-time staff. “Our people have been with us for a long time, and being a family-owned dealership is a little different than a corporate dealership,” says Menten. “People appreciate that.”

Menten’s family has been in the car business for a long time, he says. “We had multiple franchises at one point in time, from Vero Beach down to Homestead.” But when they started Sawgrass Ford, they sold all the other dealerships.

“We kind of put all our eggs in one basket. It’s been family operated 1997,” says Menten. Apparently, it’s worked out.

Driving Hard BargainsGiven his experience, we asked David Menten for some expert car-buying advice. He was eager to blow up some of the myths surrounding the process...

Dealers don’t get special deals. “Every dealer pays the exact same amount for the same make and model vehicles by law. If a dealer has a lot of something, they’re going to be more willing to make a deal on it. But there’s no price advantage to shop at a bigger or smaller dealer.”

You don’t have to pay a dealer’s fee. “The difference between manufacturer’s cost and a retailer invoice is three other costs. Dealers fi nance cars like anybody else, so you have that. There’s a [Ford] association fee, and a delivery fee to get the car to the dealership. If anybody’s adding a dealer fee alongside the taxes, that’s just additional dealer profi t.”

You didn’t really save thousands. “The bottom line is the best deal is going to have an average gross within $500 of a car’s price. You’re not really going to be getting a better deal by thousands, and people who think they got a better deal were probably misled. I hear all the time, ‘We’ll pay off your old car no matter how much you owe!’ – but every dealer pays off the car. They just work it in [to the new loan].”

Every so-called guru of social media or the Internet claims to have the next great idea to generate thousands of new clients. The reality is that most of their ideas won’t work, at least not for your business.

So, it’s time to get smart about marketing. Stop wasting your money on plans that don’t fi t your business or your clients. And don’t buy into a marketing idea just because you’re told all your competitors are doing it or it’s the next big trend. Instead, let’s focus on what’s real:

SMARTPHONES AND TABLETS ARE NOT FADS.

People tap and scroll their way through meetings, lunches and TV shows. Think about what you want them to know about your business and squeeze those messages down to a 4-inch or 10-inch screen. Give that prospective or current customer a compelling reason NOT to click a new app or swipe to the next page.

MAKE A SMART OFFER, NOT AN OBVIOUS ONE.

Every car dealership has a sale on the car you want to buy. There’s

nothing special about that. Every pizza chain has deals on toppings, to-go orders and drinks. What’s the big deal? Offer your new customers something that they haven’t seen a dozen times before in the mail, via email or on Facebook. Don’t compete on price when what you have is unique and desirable.

STUDY YOUR CLIENTELE. Think about what sets your

clientele apart and fi nd more people like them. It could be where they live, what they do for a living, or how they like to spend their free time and discretionary income. The gurus call that demographics; you should call it “knowing my customer.” Once you understand what your customer’s value, deliver it.

SHOW YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY.

Children, the less fortunate and

the environment are all great causes. Support them. There are many deserving charities, so choose one that resonates with you and your target audience. Select one where you can make a signifi cant impact, not a half-dozen where you’re just another sponsor and logo on their signage at an event.

BE AUTHENTIC. Live and communicate your

personal and business principles. Consumers can tell when you are – and are not -- being sincere. Follow the words of that marketing guru Dr. Seuss: “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”

The newest advances in Laser Technology have revolutionized “Gold Standard” CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing!! With another new technology Upgrade, we now offer “Multi-Pulse” a Deep CO2 Microablative laser that can safely and precisely remove outer layers of damaged skin and penetrate via millions of microthermal zones to reveal the underlying skin and create brand new skin which is softer, smoother and often dramatically, younger looking. It also stimulates the regeneration of healthy skin underneath (called “Laser Skin Renewal”), for a dramatically youthful and beautiful appearance!

This superlative skin resurfacing –rejuvenation procedure will reverse years of sun damage, wrinkles, scars and many other skin imperfections in just minutes. When compared to other forms of laser treatment, the new “Deep” CO2 micro ablative is the new “Gold Standard” for rapid and optimal enhancement in as littleas 1 treatment!

Our patients, ranging in age from 13 to 81 say that “The micro ablation removes sun damaged skin and makes it fresher looking; the second part called “bulk heating” improves collagen and elastic fi bers deep down that improve deep to moderate wrinkles”. It’s also great for removing all types of scars, safe anywhere on the face, body or hands and we are even using it on stretch marks. By fractioning the laser beam into microscopic beams, a specifi c portion of the skin is left unharmed, which is more conducive to healing. This fractional method enables cells

to begin healing within 24 hours and the comfortable downtime can be adjusted to fi t your busy schedule for 3 to 7 days – versus two months with the original CO2 laser.

“The new “Non-Surgical Laser Facelift or Eye Lift” can take years off a person’s appearance and give them better looking skin than someone many years younger,” noted Dr. Aguilera. Our other popular cosmetic procedures include Botox, Dysport and Dermal fi llers to replenish the volume of fat loss and bone loss on the face. Fillers take care of the volume and folds while the laser takes care of the skin’s texture, tone and elasticity. Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera is in fact, #1 in Sculptra Aesthetic Treatments in the entire USA!! No one treats more patients with Sculptra Aesthetic and is a Platinum level Top Injector and Physician Trainer for all the major injectables!

Dr. Aguilera has trained thousands of physicians and is extremely knowledgeable about the concepts and applications of skin laser and cosmetic injectable technologies. His unique ability to provide patients with a dramatically younger, more energetic look makes him an in-demand cosmetic dermatologist - and as holder of two board certifi cations and a Fellowship in Dermatology from the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, an Asst. Professor of Dermatology for 5 Universities and the Chief Medical Director

of the Dermatology Residency program at NOVA University, Dr. Aguilera is an internationally known, premier expert in optimal, natural looking, beauty restoration, Cosmetic lasers and age reversing techniques. The world class, “Shino Bay Cosmetic Dermatology & Laser Institute” is certifi ed as a prestigious, “Laser Center of Excellence” and Physician Training Center for the United States and Latin America.

Dining on French food in a café that offers an intimate ambiance may be the best way to begin– or reawaken–

your love of food. What could be more romantic than a café adorned with sparkling lights, candles, and cabaret piano music playing in the background? The French are in love with history, culture, art, wine – and this is translated into every taste of food that is offered during your dining experience.

An intimate evening is guaranteed when you stroll into Café de Paris. Owner Louis Flematti acquired the café in 1962, and much of his success over the last 50 years is due to a consistent presentation of both food and service. Chef Carlo, Pastry Chef Jean Claude, and Patricia the piano player are part of the long-term familiarity that keeps regulars returning. A beautiful Bougainvillea tree, given as a gift to Louis by a local patron who has since passed away, remains at the entrance of the restaurant.

French food is for sharing. It is sensual. And sharing over candlelight

makes this dining experience very Parisian. Begin with Coquille St. Jacques, which is classically served in a scallop shell. This creamy dish of scallops, shrimps, and mushrooms is baked to crusty perfection.

The Escargot Bourguignon, dripping in butter and garlic, will inspire bread-dipping. And if you love Duck Foiegrass and toasted Brioche, your taste buds will dance with delight over this rich, buttery, and delicate appetizer served with fresh cranberries.

What’s better than appetizers that leave you lusting for more? Entrees that are perfect proportions wrapped with love and accompanied by wine offerings chosen by Louis himself. Consider the Beef Wellington. The fi let mignon is wrapped in a fi rm, fl aky crust accompanied by bordelaise sauce, vegetables, and a potato au gratin. Veal Oscar rivaled the beef. Topped with crabmeat, the plate was delicately complemented with asparagus, mushroom risotto, and a dab of hollandaise sauce.

One should also consider the Chicken Crepe Princesse. This truly

traditional crepe is fi lled with chicken and mushrooms and is touched with a light velouté sauce. The sauce and term velouté is from the French adjectival form of velour, meaning velvet and is exquis! The Dover Sole also deserves mention and is light, fl avorful, and touched with crumbs that dust the plate.

A moment is taken between tastings to appreciate the romantic view both inside and outside leading to the street of Las Olas. The café offers several choices for seating to enhance your dining experience. The sidewalk area has cozy bistro style tables that are lit under an expansive awning, and inside, there are several intimate alcoves and four separate dining rooms. A full bar, a spiral staircase, and a grand piano are all part of the main dining rooms character that simply adds to this lovely French bistro.

Dessert is absolutely for lovers at Café de Paris. I devoured the fruit tart fi lled with pastry cream and topped with fresh fruits with little option for sharing. The cheesecake with raspberry sauce was luscious, and the Key Lime pie was scrumptious! There are wonderful desserts offered for two, which include Baked Alaska, Cherries Jubilee, Banana Foster and

Crepes Suzette.Complete your meal with a

cappuccino or one of the many exotic coffees offered. While you may not have had an aperitif such as a Pernod or Campari perhaps a digestif, an after-dinner drink, is your fancy. A taste of Grappa or Drambuie will warm you and prepare you for a lovely after dinner walk on the boulevard.

Café de Paris has live entertainment seven nights a week. Early dinner

specials are served from 5 to 6 p.m., and the café is open for holidays as well. Visit www.cafedeparislasolas.com or for reservations or special events, call (954) 467-2900 or e-mail [email protected].

BY BRUCE TURKEL

LP

My father was an innovative and very successful real estate developer. The Miami Herald called him “The Father of Florida Condominiums” because he built the fi rst residential condo in the United States – and the fi rst offi ce condo in the world.

As a kid, I used to walk from my elementary school to his construction projects. Sometimes my dad would walk me through the job site and show me where the elevators were going, how the stairs would be installed, and where the apartments were.

He’d also tell me about the construction business: How you made your money not when you sold your building but when you bought the property.... How the key to building a great building profi tably was compromising on everything except design and architecture.... And why he always wanted to sell his condo apartments as early as possible in the project’s lifespan.

Even as a kid, I thought I understood the reason for selling the project early was to get as much money as you could as quickly as possible. But my dad had a different rationale. Quite simply, he said he always preferred to “sell the dream.”

As my dad explained it, his best opportunity to sell an apartment for the highest price was to walk his potential buyer through a construction site and show them where they’d live, how close they’d be to shopping, the tennis courts, and the beach. Where they’d park and where their grandchildren would sleep when they stayed over.

But once the apartment was complete, the conversations would become more prosaic. One couple wanted harvest gold shag carpeting. The next buyer hated gold. One couple wanted a tile kitchen. The next wanted butcher block. Some people wanted bathtubs. Some people wanted showers because they couldn’t step over the bathtub rim.

So what’s an easier sell? Painting the picture of where they’re going to tuck in their adorable grandchildren? Or debating the value proposition of Corian or Formica countertops? When put in those simple terms, the advantages become clear.

Regardless of who the customer was and what they wanted, it was always easier to “sell the dream.” Because the reality never quite measured up to their fantasies.

Now think about your brand strategy. Are you promoting the intellectual, metrics-based advantages of your brand? Or have you fi gured out how to sell the dream?

Want some examples to fi gure out where you stand? Microsoft sells computing; Apple sells the dream. Checkers sells fast food; McDonald’s sells the dream. Sears sells inexpensive clothing and household items; Target sells the dream.

Selling the dream means you can concentrate your brand messaging on the things that get people excited. It means you can build a resilient message that will survive trends and fads. And it usually means you can charge – and get – a higher price for your products and services. Just like Apple, McDonald’s, Target… and my father.

Thanks, Dad.Bruce is a branding expert who makes his

clients’ brand experiences more valuable.
