SPECIAL EVENTS

TROLLING: AN EVENING WITH GEORGE HARDYAuburn Parks and Recreation and the Davis Arboretum are back again with Trolling: an Evening with George Hardy. Released in 1990, “Troll 2” was the completely unrelated sequel to “Troll” (1986). There are no trolls, only goblins. Goblins who want to gobble up the unsuspecting family who happens to sign up for a house swap in the town of Nilbog. The film has achieved unprecedented fame as the best worst movie of all-time and, at one time, held a 0% rating on the film-rating website Rotten Tomatoes. Over the years, the movie has developed a cult following and inspired a documentary entitled “Best Worst Movie.” Join the Davis Arboretum and Auburn Parks and Recreation as we host Dr. George Hardy – a 1977 Auburn graduate and native resident of Alexander City, Alabama, actor, dentist and cast member of “Troll 2” – as he discusses his experiences working on the film, subsequent fame and everything in between, and then stick around for screenings of “Troll 2” and “Best Worst Movie.” Additionally, this event has been designated an Alabama Bicentennial event, as we “Honor Our People” in the year of 2018. This event is free and open to the public. Dr. Hardy will provide a brief introduction at 6 p.m., with “Best Worst Movie” beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will be a Q&A session following the movie from 8:15 – 9 p.m. and “Troll 2” will begin at 9 p.m. Age(s) Day(s) Date(s) Time(s) LocationALL F 4/13 6 p.m. DWTNContact: Whitney Morris • (334) 501-2948 • [email protected]

ALABAMA 200The City of Auburn is working with Lee County’s bicentennial committee in support of celebrating Alabama’s 200th birthday in 2019. Throughout the next two years, we will celebrate two centuries of Alabama history across Lee County and the State of Alabama. The bicentennial theme and spirit will be a part of upcoming City of Auburn events, and will be celebrated through special, dedicated events organized by the Lee County committee. The mission of ALABAMA 200 is to support, create, and execute events and activities through 2019 that commemorate the people and places of Alabama, as well as its path to statehood. ZUMBA GOLD - THE FUN WORKOUT FOR ANYONE ANY AGE ANY ABILITYZumba Gold was designed for the older active adult, a person who hasn’t been exercising in a long time or individuals who may be limited physically. The biggest difference between Zumba Gold and Zumba basic is that Zumba Gold is done at a much lower intensity. It’s just as much fun, just not as fast! Zumba Gold utilizes the same great Latin styles of music and dance that are used in the Zumba basic program, including the Salsa, Cha-Cha, Rock ‘n Roll and Merengue. The Zumba Gold program strives to improve balance, strength, flexibility and most importantly, the heart. When you take the Zumba Gold class, be sure to wear comfortable workout clothing, take water and a towel, along with a “ready to party” attitude! FREE to the public.Age(s) Day(s) Date(s) Time(s) Location50+ WR 3/7 – 5/31 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. HCContact: Gabby Meredith • (334) 501-2946 • [email protected]

SEATED ZUMBA GOLD Zumba movements are designed to mimic many typical Latin dance styles like salsa, rumba, and cumbia. Although traditionally many of these dances require use of your entire body, they can easily be adapted for people with mobility challenges. Many movements can be done with the upper body from a seated position in a wheelchair. Because so many different styles of music are usually incorporated into typical Zumba classes, participants join into the motions they feel most comfortable with. This class is a great way to strengthen the upper body as well as the lower extremities such as ankles and feet (if able). The class can be taken from your own wheelchair or from a regular chair. Chairs will be provided. FREE to the public.Age(s) Day(s) Date(s) Time(s) Location50+ WR 3/7 – 5/31 9:30 - 10 a.m. HCContact: Gabby Meredith • (334) 501-2946 • [email protected]

YIN YOGA FOR HEALTH AND HAPPINESSYin Yoga is a little different than the “typical” yoga class. It is a more passive yoga class where we learn to relax our muscles in order to improve the health of our joints, ligaments, fascia, and all other connective tissues that normally are not exercised in traditional exercise. Please let the instructor know of any injuries or concerns as she may need to modify a pose to meet your specific needs. Yin Yoga is recommended highly if you are over the age of 35 as it helps to keep the connective tissues, joint, and other aspects of the body in proper alignment and good health as we age. Yin also teaches breathing techniques that help improve mood, sleep, and mobility. This is an all levels class from beginners to advanced. There will be a limited supply of yoga block, blankets and straps so students are encouraged to bring their own. Please bring your own yoga mat. $5/class. Payable to INST first day of class. ADULTS 50+APRIL 19TH: SERENBE FARMS TOUR AND SERENBE PLAYHOUSE EXPERIENCE, CHATTAHOOCHEE HILLS, GAThe vision for the community of Serenbe was born in an effort to protect the beautiful rural land just outside of Atlanta known as Chattahoochee Hill Country. The first house at Serenbe was built in 2004 and today the community is home to over 400 residents. Each of Serenbe’s four hamlets have complementary commercial centers focused on the elements of a well-lived life: arts for inspiration, agriculture for nourishment, health for wellbeing and education for awareness. Fresh food is another of Serenbe’s natural assets, with a 25-acre organic farm, seasonal Saturday Farmer’s Market, thriving CSA program and edible landscaping, including blueberry bushes along paths and sidewalks. Year-round cultural events include outdoor theater from Serenbe Playhouse, culinary workshops and festivals, music events, films and lectures, boutique shopping, art galleries, a spa and trail riding, plus a robust Artist in Residence program featuring dinners and talks. MARCH 16TH: PIONEER MUSEUM OF ALABAMA, TROY, ALThe Pike Pioneer Museum was established in 1969 and opened its doors in 1971 through the dedication, leadership, and inspiration of Curren Farmer, a native of Virginia but a resident of Troy, AL since childhood. Mr. Farmer conceived the idea of the Museum one day while driving along a stretch of road. In a large field he saw some old farming equipment, rusted from years of exposure from the elements and neglect. He noted, “Someone should save those.” His motivation to steward such rural life and agri-heritage was born. Our day will consist of a guided tour of the main museum building, which is home to over 18,000 artifacts dating form prehistoric Native Americans through the mid-1900s. We will then get to visit our demonstration cabin, where we will learn about daily pioneer life and get to sample cornbread and sausage cooked in a cast iron skillet. GOLF LESSONSIndian Pines Golf Course, located at 900 Country Club Drive, is an 18-hole public golf course located in Auburn and adjacent Opelika. In 2005, the course was cited by Golf Digest in their rating of Auburn as the “best golf city in America”. It is a par 70 course with summer bermuda grass and a bentgrass/ryegrass mix in the winter. Indian Pines was originally constructed in 1946 as the Saugahatchee County Club, a nine-hole course, with the first tournament being held on July 4, 1947. The back nine holes, designed by Eddie Loos, were built in 1951. In 1976, the course was sold to the cities of Auburn and Opelika, which have operated it as a municipal course since. The course was redesigned in 1999. After fire destroyed the old clubhouse, a new clubhouse was constructed in 2006. Indian Pines hosts the Indian Pines Invitational, an amateur tournament drawing 200 participants and sponsored by Miller Lite. Indian Pines is the home course of the Auburn High School Tigers golf team. BALL COLOR CHARTTennis is now easier for younger kids to play with the addition of different colored balls. These variations of tennis balls have a lower compression than the regular yellow balls. The different colored balls bounce lower for children’s height and are more forgiving on player errors in technique. The age groups for USTA (United States Tennis Association) tennis are in the following ball color categories:Red Balls: 8 and UnderOrange Balls: 9 - 10Green Balls: 11 - 12Yellow Balls: 13+ • Orange or Green Balls may be used in 13+ age groups in City of

Auburn Tennis clinics according to skill level and drill being practiced. • USTA rules and regulations for youth tennis are subject to change

according to USTA policies and standards.

ARGENTINE TANGO PRÁCTICATango is a vibrant dance between two people. It has very rich potential for expression, improvisation and connection. At the heart of Argentine tango is the desire to listen to, understand and converse with the person you’re dancing with, through this unique language of dance. Like the symbols of yin and yang, the roles of leader and follower each have a little of the other within them.
