SGA Architecture has designed many of the facilities at Brookgreen Gardens, a garden museum dedicated to
preserving native flora and fauna and displaying objects of art within that landscape. The Rice Fields Overlook and
the E. Craig Wall Jr. Lowcountry Center are some of the attractions designed by SGA.
The Rice Fields Overlook is a boardwalk through live oak trees terminating in a dramatic vista over Brookgreen’s
largest rice field. The Overlook connects to the Lowcountry Trail, an interpretive walking trail that leads visitors
through ruins of plantation’s slave quarters that once stood on the site.
The Wall Lowcountry Center serves as the gateway to the Lowcountry Trail and other exhibits at Brookgreen
Gardens. A courtyard with wildlife sculpture and native plants greets visitors as they arrive. Inside is the “Change
and Continuity” exhibit as well as an auditorium for lectures and special events.
SGA provided master plan and landscape architecture services for the design of Lemon Park, a recreational
complex in Barnwell, South Carolina. The 16-acre park includes four 200-foot fields in a cloverleaf design
surrounding a central press box / concession stand.
The park also includes a regulation-size soccer field suitable for division into smaller fields for soccer or
football ; a 300’ baseball field with Press Box; a t-ball field; a second concession stand and storage facility and a
2-acre playground.
A green, public lawn that runs the length of the block and unites single– and multi-family housing in downtown
Charleston is Simonton Park, the heart of Morris Square neighborhood.
This urban infill development mirrors the legacy neighborhoods that surround it, placing dwellings in immediate
proximity to parks, open spaces and a piazza with a custom-designed fountain, connected by the allees and hidden
gardens that exemplify Charleston urban design. Simonton Park offers an open break in the neighborhood, a green
space which all of the homes have a direct line of vision upon.
Morris Square was honored by the Tri-State ASLA (GA, SC, NC) with a Merit Award for Analysis and Planning. A second
phase is planned which includes another urban park and playground.
Shell Hall is a Traditional Neighborhood Development that provides unique opportunities for residents to interact
with one another and form strong community bonds. Recreational and leisure elements designed by SGA include a
zero-entry junior Olympic pool, clay tennis courts and an expansive green space used for croquet, bocce or casual
gatherings. The recreation amenities are part of the larger master plan, also designed by SGA.
The playground at James Island County Park provides a creative play area for children of all ages. Designed to reflect a
playful nautical theme, the playground features representations of aquatic life in the play surface as well as shade sails
over a portion of the play equipment. The sails extend to cover the “parents plaza”, an area with benches where
parents can easily supervise children at both the age 2-5 and age 5-12 play areas.
Located at the gateway to the city in Florence, South Carolina, Veterans Memorial Park pays tribute to the men and
women who have served the United States Armed Forces from 1900 to the present day.
The six acre park incorporates three main areas for reflection as well as shaded lawn areas for passive reflection and
meditation. On the south side, a stainless steel and concrete arbor planted with wisteria curves around a pervious
circle as a quiet, shaded place of meditation. At the northern terminus stands a semicircular concrete water wall
which cascades into a reflective pool. Parallel to these memorials runs an oak allee, with the five-pillared Oath of
Enlistment memorial at one end, signifying the five branches of service. This memorial is constructed of corten
weathering steel with stainless steel letters. At the opposite end is a natural amphitheater.
SGA is providing program management, land planning, landscape architecture and architecture services for this eight-
park, $31.5 million parks development project in Georgetown County. Currently in various phases of design and
construction, the park facilities include a community recreation center, a tennis complex, a soccer complex, several
baseball and softball complexes, multipurpose fields, passive recreational space and associated structures including
pressbox/concessions/restroom facilities, pavilions and more. Working as a virtual arm of the County, SGA managed
three design firms and provided overall program oversight including budgeting, construction administration,
and community input meeting coordination. Additionally, SGA designed all architectural components for all eight
parks. The first phase of the development effort is slated to be complete in 2013.
