Dear Parents,

We are very proud of the academic growth our students have made this school year. We wantto make sure that our students do not lose any of the growth they have experienced this yearthrough continuing to keep their minds active this summer. Researchers identify “summersetback” as the phenomenon of declining academic achievement during summer months. ThisLoss has taken teachers by surprise year after year. Students that do not read over the summerenter the fall at a disadvantage. Recent studies have even shown that one to two books in thesummer are not enough to prevent this decline (Kim 2004). Based on these studies, we arerequiring our students to read several books over the summer months. Summer reading isessential to all students’ yearly academic success.

Research also shows that giving students free choice over the books they read increases theirmotivation and enjoyment. We want our students to enjoy what they are reading, so we aregiving them some flexibility in what they read this summer.

We would also like to reinforce the math skills our students were taught throughout the schoolyear with our summer math packet. Additionally, when a child knows their basic math factswith automaticity, they are able to complete complex problem solving problems easier. Pleaseencourage your child to review their basic math facts this summer. Moby Max will be availablethroughout the summer. The Fact Master tab is a great online resource to utilize.

There are many online resources available to help maintain grade level skills. We have includeda bingo board of math websites for them to choose from.

Students are required to complete the Third Grade Book Chart, Math Technology Chart, andSummer Math Packet. These assignments are due by Friday, August 11th and will count as thefirst reading and math grades.
