and alkylphenolethoxylates Conforms to ecolabel Fully BPR* supported under PT 6 | 11 | 13

Product description parmetol® MBX is a fast-acting 2 in 1 in-can preservative based on a synergistic combination of benzisothiazolone (BIT), methyl-isothiazolone (MIT) and laurylamine dipropylenediamine (BDA) with a broad spectrum of efficacy.

Contaminated process water and raw materials Microbial contamination of a product can occur during its manufacture, with the majority of contaminants being present in many different sources: • Water • Raw materials • Vessels, bulk tanks and plumbing lines • Biofilms • Ion exchanger resins and reverse osmosis membranes Moreover, moderate temperatures, neutral pH and neglected housekeeping tend to cause and support process and product contamination.

How to eliminate the risk of contamination In general oxidising and non-oxidising biocides are used to prevent products from being contaminated by microorganisms. In addition to bleaching, oxidising agents possess some severe disadvantages; many manufacturers therefore use non-oxidising in-can preservatives to treat stored raw materials, wash water and finished products. This single long-term preservative may get the job done however it may be time-consuming and the cost of long-term preservation can be quite high! That is why many manufacturers use additional agents to treat raw materials and process water in order to avoid contamination within their manufacturing process. However, this approach is inconvenient, expensive and does not ensure for comprehensive process and product security! schülke therefore offers a product solution that: • Treats contaminated process water and raw materials • Enables extensive process hygiene** • Provides synergistic in-can preservation

parmetol® MBX This innovative blend based on BDA, a fast-acting amine, and MIT/BIT, responsible for in-can preservation, kills bacteria, yeasts and moulds within process water or raw materials in only a few minutes. At the same time it offers a long-term protection ensuring a well preserved finished product.

Key benefits of parmetol® MBX: • Only one dose of parmetol® MBX at the very beginning of the production process is necessary to prevent or to minimise the effect of contamination during the whole manufacturing process. • parmetol® MBX provides safer manufacturing procedures and provides the opportunity to eliminate quarantine time, product recalls and downtime issues; reduces blocking of filling lines by contaminated products. • parmetol® MBX allows for sustainable use of raw materials due to low use concentrations. • As a result, parmetol® MBX complies with the standards of various ecolabels. • No H317-/EU H208-labelling of products containing < 2 % / < 0.2 % (from 6/2015) of parmetol® MBX. ** Always consider importance of good housekeeping. parmetol® MBX-ConceptThere are various sources of microbial contamination in a manufacturing process: stagnant water in pipes may contain bacterial counts >106 cfu/ml. In addition serious sources of contamination are raw materials or other subsequently added components. What is the common approach for these problems? A single “quick-killer” is used to treat the contaminated process water and raw materials. In most cases the in-can preservative to ensure a long-term preservation is added within the last production step of the product.

schülke’s new parmetol® MBX-Concept requires the addition of the whole biocide concentration at the very beginning of the production process. Enabled due to the outstanding stability and short-term efficacy, parmetol® MBX guarantees for:

• A highly effective biocide for pre-contaminated process water • A security buffer for contaminated raw materials • Long-term in-can preservation ➜ All in one single product!

Test results comparison: parmetol® MBX | MIT/BIT | DBNPA Fast-acting biocides, so called “quick-killer” are common within several applications, e.g. the combination of dimethylol glycol, methylchloroisothiazolone and methylisothiazolone or 2,2-Dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide (DBNPA), to name a few. Since formaldehyde releasers and halogenated organic compounds are not accepted by all ecolabels and test magazines such as German “ÖKO-TEST”, the challenge is to develop a fast-acting preservative with long-term protection based on widely accepted ingredients. Due to extensive research work, laurylamine dipropylenediamine (BDA) was recognised as an excellent synergistic molecule for today’s standard soft preservatives based on methylisothiazolone (MIT) in combination with benzisothiazolone (BIT).

Test conditions Dilutions of three preservatives containing different concentrations of either DBNPA, MIT/BIT or parmetol® MBX were prepared using sterile hard water (according to the European standard for testing chemical disinfectants and antiseptics) and inoculated with standard microorganisms (approx. 105 cfu/ml). The dilutions were streaked onto tryptone soya agar (bacteria) or sabouraud-dextrose agar (fungi) after 30 seconds 2, 5, 10 and 60 minutes. The evalua-tion was made on the basis of semi-quantitative assessment of the microbial growth of the streaks.

Results Within the test period of 60 minutes the conventional mixture of methylisothiazolone with benzisothiazolone (MIT/BIT) showed no efficacy even in high use concentrations. Whereas parmetol® MBX killed all microbes within 5 to 10 minutes accordingly performed much faster than the widely known and extensively used DBNPA.

Polymer dispersion based products (e.g. paints & coatings) - Repeated challenge tests (schülke FaKo test) The test is performed to determine the efficacy of chemical preservatives, e.g. in water-containing coatings, adhesives and other water-containing technical emulsions or dispersions. This test is similar to the HauHaKo test, except 50g test batches and the current germ load is 0.2 ml with a titre of 1010 cfu/ml. A sample is considered to be well preserved after passing a period of six weeks under the above described laboratory conditions without showing microbial growth in the test batches. This means that even after the sixth inoculation no microbial contamination is observed. From experience we can state that this test equates to a microbiological stability of 24 months.

As to further improve the overall performance of parmetol® MBX various fungicides e.g. IPBC (Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate) can be added in small amounts.

In-can preservation properties

Household products - Repeated challenge tests (schülke HauHaKo test) The test is performed to determine the efficacy of chemical preservatives in household formulations, e. g. fabric softener, washing-up liquids, all-purpose cleaner etc. In separated batches different concentrations of the test preservatives are added to the unpreserved samples, an unpreserved sample is tested as a growth control. Two days after incorporation of the preservatives the 25g test batches are inoculated with a current germ load (0.1 ml, titre 108 – 109 cfu/ml) and obtained by a weekly inoculation of the test batches.

A sample is considered to be well preserved after passing a period of six weeks under the above described laboratory conditions without showing microbial growth in the test batches. This means that even after the sixth inoculation no microbial contamination is observed. From experience we can state that this test equates to a microbiological stability of 30 months which is recommended for finished household products.

Preservation properties of metal working fluids

One of the biggest threats for quality assurance, work and process

safety in the mass production of metal parts is microbial contamina-

tion. When choosing a suitable preservative for a metal working fluid

there are various factors to consider: different ingredients, pH value,

compatibility, legal approvals and climate conditions – to name a few.

The large number of possible microorganisms cannot be covered by

just one microbial active used at an acceptable dosage.

schülke offers the metalworking industry a complete range of

tailor-made biocides for all possible applications; such as preserva-

tion of metalworking fluid concentrates, post treatment of water

mixed metalworking fluids as well as microbiocidal system cleaners.

parmetol® MBX is an optimal formulation since it offers a

formaldehyde-free solution for the upcoming requirements

with additional beneficial characteristics:

• Very fast acting, broad spectrum microbicide

• Inhibition of proliferation of aerobic/anaerobic

microorganisms in aqueous systems

• Better performance compared to CMIT/MIT as

post-treatment additive

• Enhanced efficacy with fungicides tested (e.g. IPBC, OIT or BuBIT)

Stabilisation*parmetol® MBX contains methylisothiazolone and benzisothiazolone, actives that by experience react with alkanolamines. Therefore certain stabilization is required for the use of parmetol® MBX in metal working fluid concentrates containing high amine quantities. By adding inorganic salts like potassium iodate in a ratio of 1:100 (1 part of potassium iodate stabilizes 100 parts of MIT and 100 parts of BIT in the presence of 5 % alkanolamine) the stability of parmetol® MBX is proven under following conditions: 40 °C, 12 weeks storage test.

Repeated challenge tests - Water-diluted metal working fluids (schülke BoKo test) With this method the efficacy of chemical preservatives is tested according to the preservation of water-diluted metal working fluids. In separated batches different concentrations of the test preservatives are added to the unpreserved samples. An unpreserved sample is tested as a growth control. Two days after incorporation of the preservatives the test batches are inoculated with 1 ml of an inoculation solution for the first time. This solution contains microorganisms as mentioned in the following. The titre of the solution should be approx. 109 germs/ml (≈109 bacteria/ml, ≈108 yeast/ml, ≈107 moulds/ml).

As to further improve the overall performance of parmetol® MBX various fungicides e.g. IPBC (Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate) can be added in small amounts. Additionally it was found that Phenoxyethanol or -propanol are supportive as well and could be an interesting solvent for your metal working fluids if parmetol® MBX is used!
