Primer Domingo de Adviento

Be Watchful! Be Alert! Be Kind! We are coming from Thanksgiving and turning to Advent. From a time of giving thanks to a time of expectant waiting. This year we need to cultivate the ability to give thanks and practice waiting simul-taneously. We live in a time that is unusual and un-certain. Many are drained of energy coping with life as it is while St Ignatius would invite us to find the blessings that we encounter each day, even on a bad day As Advent begins, we await the birth of Je-sus. We wait for a “cure” for the pandemic. We wait for the Cardinal to make his decision about the future of our parish. We wait to be reconnected to family and friends.

In today’s Gospel Jesus call us to “Be watchful! Be alert!” How long O God I ponder. We cannot do this alone much longer. Pope Francis in this latest encyclical, Tutti Fratelli, would agree about not do-ing this alone. He writes, “No one can face life in isolation… We need a community that supports and helps us, in which we can help one another to keep looking ahead. How important it is to dream togeth-er… By ourselves, we risk seeing mirages, things that are not there.” (Tutti Fratelli, 8) We need to be watchful and alert together to avoid the mirages that occur in this time of isolation.

Pope Francis identifies a gift that I think can aide us all as we wait. The pope notes, “Saint Paul de-scribes kindness as a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:22). He uses the Greek word chrestótes, which de-scribes an attitude that is gentle, pleasant and sup-portive, not rude or coarse. Individuals who possess this quality help make other people’s lives more bearable, especially by sharing the weight of their problems, needs and fears. This way of treating oth-ers can take different forms: an act of kindness, a concern not to offend by word or deed, a readiness to alleviate their burdens. It involves “speaking words of comfort, strength, consolation and encourage-ment” (223)

The Pope continues, “Kindness frees us from the cru-elty that at times infects human relationships, from the anxiety that prevents us from thinking of others,…Often nowadays we find neither the time nor the energy to stop and be kind to others, to say “excuse me”, “pardon me”, “thank you”. Yet every now and then, miraculously, a kind person appears and is willing to set everything else aside in order to show interest, to give the gift of a smile, to speak a word of encouragement, to listen amid general indifference. If we make a daily effort to do exactly this, we can create a healthy social atmosphere in which misun-derstandings can be overcome and conflict fore-

¡Esten Alerta! ¡Sean Amables! Venimos del Dia del Acción de Gracias y vamos a Adviento. De un tiempo de dar gracias a un tiempo de espera. Este año necesitamos cultivar la habilidad de dar gracias y practicar espera simultáneamente. Vivimos en un tiempo de que es inusual e incierto. Muchos están sin energía manejando cuando la vida como pueden mientras San Ignacio nos invita a reco-nocer las bendiciones que encontramos cada día, aun en los días malos. Al comenzar el adviento, espera-mos el nacimiento de Jesús. Esperamos la “cura” de la pandemia. Esperamos que el Cardenal haga su de-cisión sobre el futuro de nuestra parroquia. Espera-mos reconectar con familia y amigos.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos llama a “Estar alerta!” Cuanto más, O Dios, me pregunto. No pode-mos hacer esta por mucho más tiempo. El Papa Fran-cisco en su ultima encíclica, Tutti Fratelli, estaría de acuerdo sobre no hacerlo solos. El escribe, “Nadie puede enfrentar la vida en aislamiento… Necesita-mos una comunidad que nos apoya y nos ayuda, en donde nos podemos ayudar unos a otros mirando al futuro. Es importante que soñemos juntos… Solos, corremos el riesgo de ver espejismos, cosas que no están ahí.” (Tutti Fratelli, 8) Necesitamos estar aler-ta juntos para evitar espejismos que ocurren en asi-lamiento.

El Papa Francisco identifica un don que creo que nos puede ayudar a todos mientras esperamos. El papa dice, “San pablo describe amabilidad como un fruto del Espíritu Santo (Gal 5:22). El use la palabra grie-ga chrestótes, que describe una actitud que es ama-ble, agradable, y de apoyo. Individuos que poseen esta cualidad ayudan a hacer la vida de otras perso-nas más fácil, especialmente al compartir el peso de sus problemas, necesidades y miedos. Esta manera de tratar a otros puede lucir de diferentes maneras: un acto de amabilidad, la preocupación de no ofen-der de palabra o hechos, listos para aliviar el peso. Incluye “hablar palabras de consuelo, fortaleza, y aliento” (223)

El Papa continua, “Amabilidad nos libera de la crueldad que de a momentos infecta a las relaciones humanas, desde la ansiedad que nos previene de pensar en otros,…Seguido en este tiempo no encon-tramos el tiempo o la energía de parar y ser amables con otros, de decir “disculpa”, “perdón”, “gracias”. De vez en cuando y milagrosamente, una persona amable aparece, y esta dispuesta a dejar de lado todo para mostrar interés, dar el don de una sonrisa, de decir palabras de aliento, de escuchar en medio de la indiferencia. Si hacemos el esfuerzo dia-rio de hacer exactamente esto, podemos crear un

As we wait this Advent, let us be alert to being kind. To watch for moments when we can extend kindness to others. There are many small ways we can be kind. Let the fruit of your kindness be the gift of the Holy Spirit you give the most.

May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles and all the saints. May their example and pres-ence inspire us with patient confi-dence in the work of your grace. Señor Jesús, nos hablas el día de hoy, igual que les hablaste a hombres y mujeres santos que nos precedieron. En cada época y en nuestro propio tiempo, nos llamas y nos dices: Renueva mi Iglesia. Prepare for the coming of the Lord Today we begin the season of Advent, a time of an-ticipation, a time of preparation. How will you pre-pare your heart for the coming of Christ? With all the uncertainty of the year, it is important that we make time to prepare. To take time away from the “craziness of the season” to help others. One way would be to help those in need of food. The food pantry could certainly use your help! Our college students have returned home just as we are receiving goods from our various donors. This past week we received donations from Saints Joseph and Francis Xavier Youth Group and Sacred Heart Schools. Last week students from Christian Life Center at Loyola University conducted a food drive in the Rogers Park and Edgewater area. They collected a wide assort-ment of goods that need to be sorted and shelved. If you would like to help with staffing during regular hours or sorting during off hours, please contact Kathy Morris at is@stignatiuschurch.org. The work does involve some lifting and standing on your feet you will be tired after an hour or two of work, but your spirit will be lifted. By helping the food pantry, you will be helping our neighbors with food for the upcoming holiday season.

Hoy comenzamos el tiempo de Adviento, un tiempo de anticipación, un tiempo de preparación. ¿Cómo prepararemos nuestro corazón para la llegada de Cristo? Con toda la incertidumbre del año, es impor-tante que nos hagamos tiempo para prepararnos. To-mar tiempo de “la locura de las fiestas” para ayudar a otros. Una manera seria de ayudar a los que necesi-tan comida. ¡La despensa puede seguro usar su ayu-da! Nuestros estudiantes universitarios han vuelto a su casa justo cuando recibimos comida de varias do-naciones. Esta semana pasada recibimos donaciones del grupo de jóvenes de San Jose y Francisco Javier y la Escuela Sagrado Corazón. La semana pasado estudiantes de Centro de Vida Cristiana de la Uni-versidad de Loyola hicieron una colecta de comida para las áreas de Rogers Park y Edgewater. Recolec-taron una gran variedad de comida que necesita ser clasificada y ordenada. Si quiere ayudar con este proyecto durante las horas regulares o fuera de hora, por favor contacte a Kathy Morris a is@stignatiuschurch.org. Es necesario levantar cierto peso y estar parados, puede estar cansados en uno o dos horas de trabajo, pero su espíritu estará elevado. Blessing of an Advent Wreath

The use of the Advent Wreath is a traditional practice which has found its place in the Church as well as in the home. The blessing of an Advent Wreath takes place on the First Sunday of Advent or on the evening before the First Sunday of Advent. When the blessing of the Advent Wreath is celebrated in the home, it is appropriate that it be blessed by a parent or another member of the family. All make the sign of the cross as the leader says:

Our help is in the name of the Lord. Response (R/.) Who made heaven and earth.

Then the Scripture, Isaiah 9: (1-2; 5-6) or Isaiah 63 (16-17 & 19) or Isaiah 64 (2-7) is read: Reader: The Word of the Lord.

R/. Thanks be to God. With hands joined, the leader says:

Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples,

he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us, he is the Savior of every nation.

Lord God, let your blessing come upon us

as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light

be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

R/. Amen. The blessing may conclude with a verse from

“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”: O come, desire of nations, bind in one the hearts of humankind;
