Day 2, Sunday, March 9 – Roma: We will start our first day in Rome off at St. Peter’s Basillica, a short metro ride from the hotel. There are a number of masses on Sunday, specifically a 10:30 mass in Latin that looks the most promising. At noon, the Pope appears in the square to do a brief prayer, so we will probably stay for that and then walk across the Tiber to grab some lunch. (I have a couple of options picked out). After Lunch, There’s a 2.2 mile walking tour of North-Central Rome in DK that looks like it will be just the ticket. We’ll cross back over the Tiber, check out Castel Sant’Angelo (Emperor Hadrian’s tomb), and then proceed to the North-East, checking out Via del Corso, Piazza Popolo, the Spanish steps, and ending at the very cool-looking Crypt at Santa Maria della Concezione. 08:00 Breakfast (Hotel) 09:00 Take the Metro to the Vatican (Ottaviano - San Pietro stop) & walk to St. Peter’s Walk South on Via Ottaviano, along the Vatican walls to St. Peter’s 10:00 St. Peter’s Basilicca - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Peter%27s_Basilica Piazza San Pietro -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Peter%27s_Square 10:30 Mass at St. Peter’s Basilicca - Altar of the Chair (very back of the church) Mass is in Latin. http://www.saintpetersbasilica.org/touristinfo.htm#information 12:00 See the Pope - On Sundays at noon, the pope usually (if he's in town) appears at the second window

from the right of the Apostolic Palace, to pray the Angelus and bless the crowd in the Square. Benedict XVI has continued this tradition, no ticket required.

Day 3, Monday, March 10 – Roma: Walking Day! Strap on your walking shoes, we’ll cover a lot of territory on foot today. We’ll start off day 3 by walking from the hotel to the Pantheon, passing by a number of key sites, including the Trevi fountain. After we see the Pantheon, we’ll continue on to the Campo di Fiore, Rome’s famous outdoor market. We’ll wander around the Campo di Fiore area for a while, then cross the Tiber to Trastavere, stopping for lunch near Santa Maria in Trastavere. After lunch, we’ll cross the Tiber again, walk through the Jewish Ghetto, and on to the Collosseum, Forum, Capitoline hill, and Palatine. These are all located in close proximity, so we will spend the afternoon exploring these areas. Depending on time, we can stroll back to the hotel, or continue to explore the area around Trajan’s markets. If we can’t make some of the sights, we can come back the next day. 08:00 Breakfast (Hotel)

Day 4, Tuesday, March 11 – Roma: We’ll probably be flexible for the last day in Rome. I’ve laid out some tentative plans, but we can always rearrange if needed. In the morning, we’ll catch the metro back over to the Vatican to explore the Vatican museums and the Sistine Chapel. We’ll probably then head back to the Capital area to catch a few things we probably won’t be able to see the day before. Lunch at L’antica Birreria Peroni should be a quick, but tasty option, if we’ve not already stopped in for a fresh Peroni the day before. We’ll leave the afternoon open for whatever we want to do (some options below). 08:00 Breakfast (hotel) 08:30 Take the Metro to the Vatican (Cipro-Musei Vaticani stop) & walk to the Vatican museum 09:00 Vatican Museum - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vatican_Museum

We’ll have lunch in Firenze, and then drive North, through Bologna to Venezia. I plan to arrive in Venice around 5, so we should be able to catch vaparetto to the hotel, and even do a little exploring before dinner.

Via dei Cimatori, 38R Probably the smallest wine bar in Florence. Opened in 1875, it's one of the most fun! Locals refer to it by the nickname "I Gemellini". Push your way up to the bar (say "Permesso" as you pass), and order one of the wines they've opened for sampling. Choose something from their menu, a crostini or sandwich, and work your way back out onto the street. Fortunately, there's no traffic and you can enjoy the scene. In the bar, there's a wooden glass holder on the wall where you can rest your glass while eating. Spaces are numbered to help you remember which is yours! When you're done, head back up the block to Perché No ice cream parlor on Via Tavolini.

Part 2 – Sicily, Calabria, Skibo Day 8, Saturday, March 15 – Venezia -> Palermo -> Monreale -> Petrosino We have an early morning flight from Venezia to Palermo, where we will meet up with Marshall & Jenifer. We have reserved a large van, and will use that for our exploration of Sicily and Calabria. From PMO, we will head southwest to the cathedral in Monreale, and the Greek ruins of Segesta. There are a couple of towns that may be fun to see on the way (more or less) to our lodging for the night. Trapani, on the coast, looks like it might be fun to explore. Erice, in the hills above Trapani looks like it might have some sensational views of the coastal towns below. We have a small bed and breakfast reserved in Petrosino near the coast for Saturday evening, with the option to eat dinner there as well. 05:00 Check out and travel to the Venice Airport. We’ll probably take a water taxi for €90. We could take a

ALILAGUNA water bus from Fondamente Nuove and save €10 a piece, but that will necessitate a half kilometer walk to catch the 05:31 bus to arrive at 06:09 at the airport. I will leave it open for the moment, but we may want to pony up for the taxi. Water Bus: http://www.alilaguna.it/ Taxi: http://www.motoscafivenezia.it/

Conversely, if we are late, Marshall and Jenifer will pick up a rental car and proceed on, and we’ll catch up with them when we can, again dropping the superfluous rental car off the next day. Marshall’s phone will work in Europe, so we will be able to coordinate / leave messages as necessary. We can also leave a message at the Sixt rental car desk as well.

Day 9, Sunday, March 16 – Petrosino -> Palermo -> Cefalu (Pettineo). Walking tour day! From Petrosino, we will drive to Palermo and do a walking tour of the main sites there. It’s kind of a hike to Palermo, but if folks are interested, we can add 22KM (and 1 hour because of backroads) and go through Corleone (pretty much just to say you’ve been to Corleone). I’m not saying we do it, lord knows we’ll be spending enough time in the car white knuckled and gripped with fear (well, you guys will), I’m just saying it’s there. Anyway… it will be Sunday, so I am still working on what will be open in Palermo if we want to explore anything in detail. I expect we will have lunch in Palermo. After our tour, we will head east, stopping in Cefalu for a quick tour of the town and very interesting Duomo. From there we will continue on to Sebastino’s Bed and Breakfast we have booked for that evening. 08:00 Breakfast (Baglio Spano) 09:00 Drive to Monreale (143KM – 1 hour 50 minutes) – Directions (+Hardcopy)

17:30 Drive to Pettineo (44KM – 45 minutes) – Directions (+Hardcopy)

Along the route SS113 Messina/Palermo between S. Stefano di Camastra and Cefalù, at km 160.700 there is a southward junction to Pettineo-Castel di Lucio going upstream of the Tusa river. At km 6.5 on the left you will find the Pettineo village. Straight-on to Castel di Lucio, after two hundred meters there is a gas station on the left, straight on at 300 m there is the "Migliaca" gate on the right. Entering the gate, there is a rather steep, coarse road going down. After two bends there is Casa Migliaca. Please drive slowly

`Day 10, Monday, March 17 – Cefalu -> Messina -> Calabria From Pettineo, we’ll drive to Messina to catch the ferry and pay a visit the old Providenti stomping grounds in Calabria. There are a few different places we can go in Calabria, just to get a good flavor. I am leaving this fairly open, but have listed a bunch of the options below. Tropea is a coastal town on the West that has great views and beaches. Stilo is on the Eastern side of the toe, and has a 5 domed Cattolica (at right) that is apparently a great example of Byzantine architecture. Gerace is also on the Eastern side, probably the quickest place to get to, and is a small, sleepy town with an immense duomo. We will probably visit the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia in Regio di Calabria to see the 6th century Riace Bronzes. Calabria is not exactly a touristy place, so we will have to play it by ear and see what we get. Should be fun! 07:30 Breakfast (Casa Migliaca) 08:30 Drive to Messina – (146KM – 1 hour 45 minutes) – Directions (+Hardcopy) 10:40 Ferry from Messina to Villa San Giovanni http://www.carontetourist.it/caronteeng/MessinaVillaSanGiovanni.mvd Status: Not Booked - €23

Day 11, Tuesday, March 18 – Milazzo -> Taormina -> Catania -> Siracusa We’ll leave Milazzo in the morning, and drive on to Taormina. (We can either take the Autostrada around the northeast corner of Sicily, or take the more scenic backroads for some local flavor, hair-raising hairpins, and awesome views of Mount Etna). We will spend the morning exploring Taormina. The Greek Theater is awesome, and nice to sit for a little rest and retrospective. We will also devote some time in Taormina to shopping, as Taormina is an excellent place to pick out a Chicken Pitcher or two… After lunching in Taormina, we will drive South, perhaps stopping in Catania, Sicily’s 2nd largest city, or we can just push on to Siracusa. I’ll put together an agenda for Catania just in case, but I think our time will be better spent in Siracusa. Als always, it is a lot easier to subtract on the fly than it is to add… Siracusa looks absolutely awesome from my point of view – plenty of Greek ruins to explore. 08:00 Breakfast (Petit Hotel) 08:30 Drive to Taormina (85KM – 1 hour) – Directions
