Comprehensive Reflection
Creating this integrated unit was very time consuming, but extremely helpful. I have
gained so much experience and knowledge on how to create a lesson plan integrating
multiple subjects. I now understand how to connect the standards to the themes of my
lesson plan. It was very hard to create the seven day calendar as I had to move a lot of
my days around in order for the unit to be affective. It was difficult at first to integrate
multiple subjects to a social studies lesson plan, but with more experience and practice
it became easier and almost natural to incorporate another subject within my lesson. I
had fun coming up with activities for my students to complete. It was also difficult to
surround my lesson on one main theme at first, but as I continued my calendar
activities it seemed to all work out and come together perfectly. My service learning
project is a great idea for my lesson plan theme and I would like to use this actual idea
in the future in my own classroom. It was very easy to tie in a childrens literature book
into my unit. The book is what actually helped me complete my unit and give me a
theme! I never realized how much a book could be used to help teach about social
studies or any other subject for that matter. The three part integrated social studies unit

was very well organized and a great way to help a future teacher prepare to create
lesson plans that incorporate multiple subjects. I really liked the lesson plan template
given for this assignment, and I will most likely use it again! Coming up with activities
for seven days was actually kind of hard and I had to keep in mind that this unit is for
the second grade level. I am glad that I was given this opportunity to gain experiences,
skills, and knowledge on how to create an effective unit plan using the Childrens book
I chose!
