In her thesis Fault-ride-through capability at wind power plant interfacing a three-phase generator to a dc-
bus, wind energy conversion units connected to a three-phase controlled switch active converters were
proposed to ride through system faults. Due to the increasing number of grid-connected wind farms, wind
turbine generators play an essential function in maintaining grid stability by staying connected to the power
grid for short periods of fault conditions. The collection grids' dynamic behaviour, which involves sub-modules
consisting of controller and fault blocking diode, was investigated. The results demonstrated that fault blocking
diodes detected the fault very quickly and protected power systems from thermal over-stresses by creating a
new current path to eliminate the fault current effect, resulting in a stable and reliable operation.

In his thesis, Non-line-of-sight identification and mitigation for indoor localisation with ultra-wideband sensor
networks, the promovendus developed novel techniques to identify and correct ranging and location errors
caused by obstructions indoors. This research aimed to improve the localisation accuracy in non-line-of-sight
(NLOS) conditions for impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) sensor networks. The proposed NLOS
identification techniques were based on machine learning and exploitation of distance residuals. The proposed
NLOS mitigation techniques exploit floor plans and geometric constraints. The results showed that when
compared to state-of-the-art techniques, the proposed techniques exhibit similar performance but have lower
complexity, which is ideal for resource-constrained embedded devices used in IR-UWB sensor networks.

In his thesis, Risk-constrained stochastic economic dispatch and demand response with maximal renewable
penetration under renewable obligation, the promovendus proposes a combined economic dispatch and
demand response model that integrates renewable energy sources using a renewable obligation framework.
The model proposes an optimal power dispatch strategy that takes advantage of demand response to
minimise generation cost and maximise renewable penetration. The intermittent nature of renewable energy
sources is modelled using dynamic scenarios. To reduce the number of all possible scenarios, a scenario
reduction based method is applied, and different optimal solutions are presented for the renewable
obligation. Further decision-making is conducted to assess the trade-offs associated with multiple optimal
solutions. The results demonstrated that the proposed renewable obligation and demand response model is
robust and can increase the level of renewable energy penetration in a power system without affecting the
system reliability.

In his thesis, SDN-based adaptive data enabled channel estimation in the internet of maritime things for
QoS enhancement in nautical radio networks, the promovendus developed two novel channel estimators
named inter-symbol interference/average noise reduction (ISI/ANR) and reweighted error-reducing (RER)
estimators for estimating maritime channels. This innovation was required for enhancing the propagation
performances of nautical radio networks in both severe and light-fading environmental conditions. When
signals transmit across maritime environments, they may encounter profound environmental challenges such
as deep-ocean waves, unstable ship movements, and weather conditions such as extreme temperatures,
snowfalls and torrential rainfalls. The proposed estimation schemes are useful for improving the transmission
and reception quality of communication signals that travel across marine surroundings through a process
called channel estimation. Additionally, the promovendus developed a novel architecture enabling emergent
configurations during oil and gas explorations. Results confirmed the validity and superiority of the proposed
estimators over other existing schemes.

In this thesis, Smart energy coordination for a microgrid, the promovendus developed a dynamic energy
management system for the adaptable electrical network. The electrical grid complexity increases due to the
expanding diversity of energy resources, insufficiency of the current power grid, and demand growth. Globally,
more than one billion people still do not have access to the electrical grid. Smart grid technologies in the energy
sector can resolve several present and future power challenges. Smart grid technologies with microgrids
provide an opportunity to optimally share the electricity, minimise the energy cost, and ensure the quality of
the power grid. A framework was designed applying system analysis to coordinate the energy flow of an
electrical network optimally. The results demonstrated that the developed smart framework satisfies the
system performance index in terms of cost reduction, energy sharing and power quality.

In his thesis, Stochastic geometry-based interference modeling in cognitive radio networks, the promovendus
found that for a successful deployment of next-generation networks, the interference must be appropriately
characterised to ensure efficient and effective usage of scarce spectrum resources. In his thesis, novel
stochastic geometry-based interference models were formulated for effective interference modelling in
cognitive radio networks. Analyses were obtained for relevant performance metrics of interests, while some
critical characteristics of real-life systems, such as dependence, mobility and handover, were captured in the
system modelling. Furthermore, a novel spatiotemporal model was developed to investigate users’ quality of
experience in the network. Simultaneously, malicious activities were modelled to reduce the impact of
malicious users on network performance. The obtained results showed that the developed models are useful
for successfully deploying cognitive heterogeneous networks beyond 5G.

In this thesis, Readiness assessment for mining projects, the promovendus proposed a novel method for
evaluating the readiness of a mining project study to proceed into the detail design and construction phase.
A new tool was developed using a mixed-method approach. All the applicable elements which contribute to
the success of a mining project was identified, and weights assigned to these elements to create a tool that
can be used to evaluate the maturity of the front-end planning phase of a project. The new tool was tested
against completed projects in the mining sector to establish validity and determine the appropriate point in
the front-end planning phase to proceed to the next phase. The result of the study was a new tool that can be
used to evaluate the maturity of a mining project study. Executives can use this tool to make informed
decisions regarding capital investments. Project teams can also use it as a self-assessment tool to establish
alignment on key focus areas in the project study.

In her thesis, A novel systems approach to energy poverty in Sub-Saharan africa: A South African informal
settlement case study, the promovenda explored a multidisciplinary approach to understand energy
poverty as impacted by energy policies, electricity access issues, geospatial analysis, energy use and
energy access management with specific emphasis on informal settlements in South Africa. The thesis
relied on a novel use of systems engineering and systems thinking. Critical outcomes include developing
a novel system reinforcing model and a management scheme for energy access sustainability. The
researcher showed their applicability in mitigating energy poverty in any energy-poor community. This
thesis illustrated the categorisation of complex systems and elements as design decisions and system
designs. These systems and components are grounded in energy-use patterns and behaviour, energy
access, and energy access sustainability as well as socio-economic, cultural, technical and environmental
features. The utility of the novel systems approach developed in her thesis was a major step towards
addressing the scourge of energy poverty.

In her thesis The use of project portfolios in effective strategy execution to improve business value, the
promovenda propose a tested framework and salient factors that enable the effective execution of corporate
strategy through project portfolios. The documented framework, consisting of strategic intent, project
portfolios, project portfolio success and business value, was tested through a multiple case study method.
Furthermore, 25 salient factors were identified that are central to the effective execution of corporate strategy.
A maturity model was developed to aid business in assessing the maturity of their approach in using project
portfolios to effectively execute corporate strategy in order to improve business value. The lack of a tested
guiding framework was a concern highlighted by researchers. The tested framework and the 25 salient factors,
provide business leaders with a sound starting point in the use of project portfolios in effective strategy
execution to improve business value.
