Introduction: The Bernard’s Brook claims, 30 in Licence 017551M, form a part of the Paul’s Pond South property, which is located in Central Newfoundland. The property was staked in 2009 for its gold potential. Regional lake sediment surveys revealed anomalous gold and arsenic values in this area. The gold value was 5.5 ppb in a small pond in the Bernard’s Brook watershed. Location and Access: The Bernards Brook Claim Group is located 55 km from the town of Glenwood by woods roads to the southern boundary. Further access is by foot along skidder trails. Previous Work: Work was done by Noranda to the northwest of the claim group but no work was done on the property itself. Geology and Mineralization: The Bernards Brook claim group is underlain by blue tightly folded phyllite of the Davidsville Group. Micro folds of narrow quartz veins are common. Pyrite and arsenopyrite are notably absent. Outcrops are rare. Much of the area is covered by Pleistocene clays and bog. Outcrops are typically exposed on ridges. Prospecting 2010: Prospecting on the Bernards Brook claim group was carried out in May. Prospecting combined with soil sampling was carried out along woods roads and skidder trails where soil is exposed, yielding a total of 120 soil samples, mostly grey glacial clay or brown ‘B’ horizon. These were assayed for gold, arsenic, and 10 other elements. A handheld GPS was used for locating sample sites. Several anomalous values of gold were found in the soil samples along the western boundary. Anomalous values of arsenic were scattered throughout the claim group. Follow-up sampling was carried out in November in the vicinity of the anomalous gold values. A total of 43 samples were taken.

Results: 5 samples from the May prospecting were anomalous ranging from 21-358 ppb Au. Practically all samples were elevated in arsenic ranging from 6 to 282 ppm. The arsenic for the high gold was 29 ppm. The re-sampling program carried out in November yielded 5 samples ranging from 40 to 193 ppb Au. There is no correlation between high gold and high arsenic values. Most arsenic samples show background gold values. Conclusions and Recommendations: The presence of anomalous gold values on the Bernards Brook claim group indicates that there is good potential for gold deposits. It is recommended that more detailed soil sampling be carried out in the western part of the claim block and a grid set up.

Introduction: The possibility of gold in the rivers west of the Bay d’Espoir Highway led to a one-day recce by Philip Healey working with Gordon E. Cooper. Rain made it difficult if not impossible to carry out an extensive sampling program, so it was decided to go on a one-day recce. The rivers were high but interesting rock samples were obtained and assayed. Location and Access: The rivers sampled were the Northwest Gander and Bernard Brook, located along the Bay d’Espoir Highway, 55 km and 100km South of the Bay d’Espoir Turnoff (Exploits Motel). Previous Work: Moydow Minerals has done work in the Bernard Brook area; Golden Dory is working north of the Northwest Gander. Geology and Mineralization: The Bernard Brook area is underlain by pelites and siltstone with sandstone and some graphitic slate to the northwest. These rocks belong to the St. Joseph’s Cover Formation of the Bay d’Espoir Group, Ordovician in age. The Northwest Gander, west of the Bay d’Espoir Highway is underlain mainly by Lower and Middle Ordovician sandstone siltstone and shale northwest of the Northwest Gander; southeast is Ophiolitic rocks, mainly ultramafic. Mineralization in the Bernard Brook area lies to the southwest; these are the gold and antimony showings at True Grit and Golden Grit. Gold showings in the sedimentary rocks of the Northwest Gander are not known to date. Prospecting 2010 Despite heavy rains, it was decided to make a recce expedition to the Northwest Gander and Bernard Brook areas of interest because of the sedimentary rocks similar to the Davidsville rocks. The trip was confined to a single day due to high water; and difficulty obtaining river gravels. 6 samples of rock were taken from the Northwest Gander; 3 from Bernard Brook. Samples taken from the Northwest Gander were west of the road; these were rounded cobbles, mica-quartz in composition. The 3 samples from Bernard Brook are blue-grey sandstone (subrounded).

Page 10: PART I - Newfoundland and Labradorgis.geosurv.gov.nl.ca/geofilePDFS/Batch2015/002D_0835.pdf · The Bernard’s Brook claims, 30 in Licence 017551M, form a part of the Paul’s Pond

The trip was terminated due to high water which made it impossible to carry out a more detailed sampling program. Results: 5 samples from the Northwest Gander were assayed for Au and 11 other elements. Elevated Ni was detected by gold was not anomalous. 3 samples from the Bernard Brook traverse were assayed as above. Gold was not anomalous but there were elevated values of arsenic. Conclusions and Recommendations: The presence of anomalous arsenic in the Bernard Brook samples offer some potential for Au, especially since Au showings exist to the southwest in the same formation. Further work is planned for next year. The New Gander samples are well rounded and the anomalous Ni suggests derivation from the ultramafic belt. No further work is planned along this river unless the water is extremely low. Respectfully submitted, _____________________ Gordon E. Cooper, M.Sc.
