I-1.0 INTRODUCTION

.I 1.1 LOCATION

.I Exploration activity undertaken by MP AL and its Joint Venture

I partners has been on Licences within the Tennant Creek 1:250,000 sheet area

bounded by latitudes 1905 and 200S and longitudes 133030'E and 1350E (Fig 1-1).

I The township of Tennant Creek (population 3000) is located 500 km

north of Alice Springs and 1000 km south of Darwin.

I 1.2 LAND TITLE

I Exploration Licence 1463 was granted to Australian Ores and Minerals'

I Ltd. on June 27, 1978. The initial area granted was 197.00 square kilometres

i, however relinquishments under the terms of the Mining Act have reduced this to

I the current area of 48.43 square kilometres.

Exploration prior to 1979 was carried out by Australian Ores and

:1 Minerals Ltd. During 1979-81 MPAL carried out exploration on behalf of AdM

under the terms of a Joint Venture that received Ministerial approval on

I. December 13, 1978.

I 1.3 REGIONAL GEOLOGY AND MINERALIZATION

I Comprehensive reviews of the geology are given by many authors

'.. including Crohn (1965), Large (1975) and Black (1977).

1 The Early Proterozoic Warramunga Group forms a large portion of the

Tennant Creek Block. It has been subdivided into:-"I the Whippet ~ormation, a sequence of shallow water

quartzose sandstones;

I the Bernborough Formation, a series of rhyolitic ex-

I trusives and intrusives; and

the Carraman Formation, consisting of shale, lithic sand-:.1 ' stone and local tuff levels. The Carraman Formation hosts all the known

mineralization in the area.

II Carpentarian shallow water sediments of the Hatches Creek Group in

the south and Tomkinson Creek Beds to the north unconformably overlie the

I Warramunga Group.

I Mineralization in the Carraman Formation consists primarily of gold-

..eopper-bismuth assemblages hosted in "ir~nstones", a local term used to describe -I the hematite ~ magnetite ~ quartz ~ chlorite gangue mineralogy. The major

orebodies mined to date are described as pipe-like or pod-like in form.

JI !2.0 .WORK UNDERTAKEN f

I 1"Work undertaken on EL 1463 by MPAL has included a study of the J

I available regional aeromagnetic and spectrometer data, a photogeological study.

detailed: mapping, gridding, gravity surveying and percussion and diamond drilling.

I In early 1978 all available regional aeromagnetic and spectrometer

I data was studied to determine the. Possibl.e i~flu~nc.es of regional structures. on

, the loca1 geology. The aeromagnetIc compIlatIon IndIcated the presence of major,

I east~ortheast. east-southeast and northwest faults and shears and also indicated.the presence of distinct magnetic zones. 'f

I During August to October 1978, a photogeological study of the easternpart of the Tennant Creek Gold Field was undertaken on behalf of Marathon

I Petroleum Australia, Ltd. by Loxton, :Hunting and Associates Pty. Ltd. using black

and white RC9 aerial photographs. The aim of the interpretation was to provide

I as detailed a lithos~atigraPhiC and structural map as possible on which to base

subsequent exploratIon.' I' ..In late 1979. Consultant Geophysicist R.K. Jones ui'>dated the initi~l

,.interpretation of the aeromagnetic data and concluded that there were no

I prospective targets of the "Tennant Cre~k type" located ~ithin. EL 1463.

I" During early 1981, reconnaissance geological mapping was undertakenover outcrop approximately two kilometres southeast of the Threeways. This

J,. indicated the. presence of tuffs a~d sands.tone U~its with ~ ~est-northwe~t -east-

southeast strike. Subsequent detaIl mappmg durIng 1981 mdIcated that fIne tUffs,

'I tuffaceous sediments and crystal tuffs of the Bernborough Formation and

overlying quartzose sandstones similar to those of the Whippet Formation I

I. outcropped within the Licence. -I

In mid-1981 a six kilometre by five kilometre semi-regional grid was

I established with stations located at 100 metre intervals on north-south orientated

traverse lines located approximately one kilometre apart. A ground magnetic

.J. survey was then under~aken on this grid.. Interpre.tation of. the two broad

magnetic anomalies defmed suggested a serIes of bodIes or a sIngle broad bodyI ; dipping steeply to the south.

I \I ,;

I During August 1981 Solo Geophysics and Company of Adelaide

undertook a regional gravity programme in the Tennant Creek area. Part of this

I survey was within E.L. 1463. Stations were read at approximately 1 kilometre out

along the Stuart Highway and Barkley Highway and at one-half kilometre spacings

along the 2000E profile within the local MP AL grid.I "

During September 1981, Rockdril Contractors Pty. Ltd. of Brisbane'c

I supplied a truck mounted Foxmobile rig to carry out a two hole drilling

programme that aggregated 260 metres of combined diamond and percussion

I drilling. The aim of the programme was to test the broad magnetic anomalies

defined by the detailed ground magnetic survey. The source of the anomaly was

.1 intersected in one hole, and was found to be a feldspathic lapilli tuff that had a

higher magnetic susceptability than the enclosing crystal lithic tuffs. Thec approximately one metre thick lapilli tuff is of no economic significance. The

C I" second magnetic anomaly is not adequately explained by the drilling results.

Ic Details of all phases of the exploration undertaken by Aust~alian Ores

and Minerals Ltd., and Marathon Petroleum Australia, Ltd. are available uponc

;}I request from the company offices in Perth and Brisbane respectively or from the

, ..N. T .D.M.E. in Darwin (see attached list of references).c

I '3.0 EXPENDITUR~

I A total of $53,027.72 has been expended on EL. 1463 as a directI

exploration cost from 01/01/78 to 31/12/81.!

A tabulation of these expenses appears as Table 3-1.
