WORLD HEALTH DAY 2015: FOOD SAFETY - 7 APRIL 2015 - WORLD HEALTH DAY

Unsafe food is linked to the deaths of an estimated 2 million people annually – including many children. Food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances is responsible for more than 200 diseases, ranging from diarrhoea to cancers.

New threats to food safety are constantly emerging. Changes in food production, distribution and consumption; changes to the environment; new and emerging pathogens; antimicrobial resistance - all pose challenges to national food safety systems. Increases in travel and trade enhance the likelihood that contamination can spread internationally.

The topic for World Health Day 2015 is food safety As our food supply becomes increasingly globalized, the need to strengthen food safety systems in and between all countries is becoming more and more evident. That is why the WHO is promoting efforts to improve food safety, from farm to plate (and everywhere in between) on World Health Day, 7 April 2015. To find out more click here.

You wouldn't eat 16 teaspoons of sugar in one hit, so why would you drink them all in one go?

Did you know there are about 16 teaspoons of sugar in a 600ml bottle of regular soft drink? Or about nine teaspoons in a sports drink? Talk about having to work it off after you've already been working out!

Over time all that extra sugar in sugary drinks starts to add up. If you're not burning it off, you could be drinking yourself fat, increasing your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

So instead of grabbing a soft drink, why not try water, reduced-fat milk or unsweetened drinks instead?

Smoking is the largest preventable cause of death and disease in Australia.

Advice from a health professional is one of the most effective ways to encourage people to quit: one in every 33 conversations will lead to a patient successfully quitting smoking.*

Start the conversation challenges health professionals to raise the topic of smoking with their patients. The stories on this site are about real patients and clinicians. They share their experiences about the life-changing conversations that resulted in people quitting smoking. It’s time to start the conversation.

WEBINAR: UNDERSTANDING COMPLEX REGIONAL PAIN SYNDROME

Monday 20 April 2015 @ 7.00 – 8.00pm AEST Target audience: Clinicians of various disciplines across musculoskeletal health and other sectors.

About the presentation: Complex Regional Pain Pyndrome (CRPS) can be difficult to understand and treat effectively. Recently, much of the research into CRPS has turned to the role of the brain in this disorder. The spread of signs and symptoms from the initial site of an injury to other body areas, together with the presence of intriguing perceptual disturbances such as reduced tactile acuity and perception of a larger limb, point towards central mechanisms playing a key role. During this webinar, Flavia will discuss the latest evidence from neuro-imaging and explore the concept of ‘neuroplasticity’ in pain. Anne will then present an acute treatment plan and a longer term management paradigm, informed by both the evidence and clinical experience with patients with both acute and chronic pain states.

Cost: $38 (inc GST) per webinar for individual Arthritis and Osteoporosis Victoria Health Professional Associate members and the members of organisations and professional associations which are organisational Arthritis and Osteoporosis Victoria Health Professional Associate members. $55 (inc GST) per webinar for non-members.

Please note If you are unsure that you will be able to view a webinar at the time of its screening, you can still register and pay and you will receive a recording of the webinar within 7 working days of its screening. Registrations: To register for this webinar, please email [email protected] to receive the registration link, or you can visit our website www.arthritisvic.org.au For further information call 03 8531 8022 or toll free 1800 263 265.
