NOVA SCOTIA PUBLIC SCHOOL PROGRAM

Nova Scotia offers a primary to 12 program, with all subjects taught in English. Programs in French immersion and French fi rst language are also available. Our program enhances cross cultural understanding and global awareness, and provides opportunities for students to establish long-term, positive relationships for future connections and networks. Thousands of students from across the world excel in the Nova Scotia program and go on to be successful at university. The Nova Scotia high school graduation diploma is confi rmation of a superior education and is accepted by universities and colleges worldwide.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS

A number of international schools offer the Nova Scotia Public School Program, giving their students the oppor-tunity to graduate with a Nova Scotia High School diploma and potentially continue their studies at a Canadian post-secondary institution. Nova Scotia has partnered with many high-performing schools in both the public and private sectors.

Essential Graduation Leanings

To meet the shifting and ongoing demands of life, work, and study in the 21st century, graduates of the Nova ScotiaPublic School Program will be able to demonstrate know-ledge, skills, and attitudes in the following areas:

Curriculum

The curriculum is high quality, knowledge based, and abilities focused. Curriculum outcome statements identify what students are expected to know, be able to do, and value upon completion of study in a curriculum area.

Assessment

Student assessments provide information about individual student achievement in relation to expected learning outcomes. School assessments are conducted in grades 3, 6, and 9. Nova Scotia Examinations in English and Mathematics are administered at the grade 12 level.

Accreditation

An international school (public or private) can be accredited by the Nova Scotia Department of Education. Once accredited, the international school becomes a partner of the Nova Scotia Department of Education and a member of our international family of schools.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

The Nova Scotia Department of Education collaborates with organizations and governments seeking to strengthen and enhance their local education systems. The Nova Scotia Department of Education will develop a specialized program or product responsive to its partner’s needs by drawing upon its expertise in the following areas:

Curriculum Design, Development, and Implementation

• Programs and courses for grades primary to 12• Early learning programs• English as a second language and French as a second language programs• Student and teaching resources, including information and communications technology and non-print media learning supports• Information and communications technology integration• Correspondence study and on-line programs• Multicultural education emphasizing non-discriminatory practices, resources, and the inclusion of diverse perspectives• Consultative and advisory services• Software and resource evaluation

• School Code of Conduct policy development and implementation• Comprehensive guidance and counseling• Special education programs and services• Differentiated instruction• Reading Recovery and literacy support planning
