Scope of the agreement
Publishers Program Libraries Program. Google has been scanning into its search
database millions of books provided by major research libraries of the USA, Europe and Asia:
• USA: Harvard, California, Stanford , Michigan, New York Public Library…
• Europe: Oxford, Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek, Ghent University Library, Bibliothèque Cantonale et Universitaire de Lausanne, Bibliothèque Municipale de Lyon. In Spain, Biblioteca de Cataluña and the Biblioteca de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid
• Asia: Keio University Library, Japan
In September of 2006 the Complutense University of Madrid and Google signed a partnership agreement primarily focused on the large-scale digitization of the library’s public domain

What is Google doing?
• Google digitizes our books in the public domain and assumes the costs of the scanning.
• Google shows the full text of those books in Google Books.
• Google creates an interface for each partner (Complutense, Harvard, etc.) to access to their digitized books.

What is the Complutense Library doing?
• The Complutense Library is providing its resources and technical staff.
• The library staff select the material and organize the logistic to ensure the books safety.

Aims of the mass digitization project
Offering access to the University’s library heritage and contribute to its dissemination, access and preservation.
Increase in the use of the Catalogue. Sharing our books stock with the society. To complete the cataloguing of rare books and those of
the 19th century yet to be processed. Establish a conservation and restoration plan for damaged
books.AND… “Selling” the Spanish language abroad.

Planning and designing of the digitization project
Analysis of Complutense collections. 32 libraries involved.
Situation reports: buildings, facilities, repositories accesses, etc.
Cataloging plan: during 2007 and 2008 were catalogued 70.000 books.
Selection criteria guide: fixed criteria (publication year) and criteria depending on the physical condition of the books.
Binding the books from the 19th Century. Recommendations guide.
Digitization program: workflows and logistic operations.

Technological applications
Web application to carry out the internal management process of the digitization:
• It shows updated and accurate information online and in real time on all the processes involved in the digitization, with statistical data of the operations.
• This application stores the metadata of the books included in the digitization project.

Technological applications
PDA• The selection team uses this device to store
the physical conditions of the books according to our selection criteria.
• Firstly a book’s barcode is read• Subsequently a form is presented on the screen
in which the librarian notes a series of points regarding the book’s state of conservation
• Then, the librarian exports that information to the Web Management System and later it is exported to the library Catalog.

books.– Starting in the fall Complutense public domain
books can be freely accessed in Google Books
2009 October:– Thousands of digitized books are already
accessible in Google Books
