Key elements of UNIT’s Smart Grid and energy management solutions:

Key factors influencing solution design:

Key challenge of future energy management is balancing supply and demand in energy grids and improving energy efficiency,

Key goal is to enable energy savings and load control and

Key success factor is system ability to meet consumer needs through the demand side program and realize system as integrated smart energy management solution.

Key solution architecture concept:

Smart Grid and energy management solutions designed as modules of integrated smart energy solution. Importance of integrated smart energy solutions is going to rise in future especially after wide deployment of electric vehicles and renewable energy sources, like solar power and wind turbines that are not fully compatible with the current grid infrastructure.

UNIT’s main Smart Energy Management products:

Integrated Metering to Consumer Service (MCS)

Smart Grid MV data network (SGMV)

Smart Street and Public Lighting (SSPL)

Consumer Energy Management & smart home (CEM)

Smart Energy Management & smart building (SEM)

UNIT’s Smart Metering system is designed asintegrated Metering to Consumer Service (MCS)solution to act as a support of both energy providersand consumers and integrate metering and consumersengagement on energy savings and improvement ofenergy efficiency.

MCS is much more than standard AMI solution thatprovides metering on LV-grid targeting energy meteras main system entity.

MCS is integration of end-to-end metering and energymanagement from MV-grid to the home targetingconsumer as main system entity.

MCS is a key entity of UNIT’s integrated smart gridenergy management solution.

MCS enables energy providers to implement energyprices dependent of energy usage engagingconsumers to be aware of energy consumption, to beactive participants in energy savings and load control.

MCS enables consumers to be in control of theirconsumption cutting energy bills.

MCS sophisticated smart-phone application do notrequire in-home display or installation of any home-device enabling consumers high level of energymanagement.

UNIT has designed the unique, smart grid networksolution (SGMV) where main communication carrier isexisting electricity cables and main communicationtechnology is BPL (Broadband Power Line) andbackup communication technology is LTE or WiFi.

SGMV enables integrated data processing of all utilityapplications: grid management (OMS, DSA andothers), smart metering, smart home, smart publiclighting and smart cities enabling integrated energymanagement on all grid levels from distribution to endconsumer.

SGMV is designed as broadband, high data rate, highlysecured and data traffic controllable data networkenabling parallel data processing of multiple gridapplications.

SGMV enables utilities to use own grid infrastructureto build unique smart grid communicationinfrastructure for all applications on the grid havingintegrated energy management, energy savings, loadcontrol and energy efficiency tool.

SGMV enables utilities to cut operational andmaintenance costs on having different communicationtechnologies for different grid applications and cutexpenses for leasing or licensing differentcommunication infrastructures.

Consumer Energy Management (CEM)

CEM is highly advanced solution for engagement ofconsumers enabling their active participation on demandside program and energy savings without in-home display.

CEM benefits: CEM enables regulators to implement dynamic tariff

models dependent of use of energy. CEM enables energy providers to facilitate consumers

active participation on demand side programs withoutinvesting in IHD or any other equipment at home.

CEM enables consumers to manage energyconsumption, reduce peak electric demand and reduceelectric bills.

Essential for load managemnet is implementation ofsolutions that enables active participation of consumerson demand side programs allowing consumers todynamically modify their electric energy consumptionand load in response to grid conditions. Recent forecastof the US consumer energy management market is to beworth $48 billion by 2018.

From the consumer side, perhaps the biggest barrier togreater participation in energy management is based onobsolete of energy data offered by AMI consumer’s webportals and limited use value of in-home display (IHD)and need to invest in it.

SEM is smart solution for energy monitoring, energymanagement, energy saving, device recognition and devicecontrol designed as smart energy solution for advancedconsumers and company customers such as office buildings, shops, production facilities or other big energy consumers.

SEM improves energy efficiency, saves energy and significantlycut energy bills enabling company customers to have smartenergy management and remote control of individualelectrical devices such as heating system, air conditioningsystem, production machines, pumps and other electricaldevices enabling smart control of energy usage, consumptionand load.

SEM is based on hardware modules designed for office, building or production facility grid infrastructure enablingremote control (switch ON/OFF) of industrial electrical devices.Installation of SEM hardware modules is very simple, lastseveral minutes and do not require any intervention oncustomers grid.

Beside electrical device control provided by SEM hardwaremodules, SEM is designed for integrated control of large scaleof smart devices based on ZigBee and ZWave communicationtechnologies such as smart thermostats, smart plugs, smartradiator control units, room control units, cameras, securityand access control units and other smart devices all availableon the retail market enabling implementation of smart buildingwithout need for additional communication h/w or additionalsmart building management software.

SSPL is multifunctional solution designed for smartstreet/public lighting based on broadband power-linecommunication (BPL).

SSPL is much more than standard smart street lightingsolution. Beside energy saving and advanced management ofstreet and public lighting, SSPL could be used for trafficcontrol, parking control, EV recharging station, surveillanceand other Smart Grid applications.

SSPL is based on 2 hardware modules : in-lamp-module (LLC-BPL) installed inside the LED lamp housing and street lightingconcentrator (TSC-SSL) installed inside the transformerstation. SSPL installation is easy and simple.

SSPL in-lamp-module LLC-BPL enables:

Light dimming and switch ON-OFF

Connection and control of additional smart devices such asIP-camera and sensors for motion detection, temperature,CO2, light intensity and others.

SSPL solution is designed for easy integration with other UNITsSmart Grid solutions and could be integrated as one ofmodules of Smart City system.

UNIT Hardware products

UNIT hardware products are designed as modular Smart Grid products with broadband communication and broadcast, web service oriented data processing between end-point and data center.

For each of Smart Grid solutions, UNIT has designed 2 level of hardware products:

Hardware unit for end-point processing such as LMC (local meter concentrator for smart metering), LCC (local CEM concentrator for CEM), LLC (local lighting concentrator for SSPL).

Hardware unit for multi-end-point processing such as TSC-SMI (transformer station concentrator for smart metering), TSC-CEM (transformer station concentrator for CEM), LLC (transformer station concentrator for SSPL).

Main characteristic of all hardware units have high-performance processors, are programmable and have broadband communication: BPL (broadband power line) or 3G or LTE and are designed for easy implementation of any new communication technology.

All hardware units for end-point processing have additional, plug-in communication hardware units for multi functional data processing such as LMM-MBUS for multi-utility metering for water, gas and heating , LCM-ZWave/ZigBee for control of smart-home devices (smart plugs, smart thermostats etc), LLM-ZWave for integration of smart-control devices (smart sensors, smart cameras etc)
